Christmas in Memphis

I have lived in the Memphis area for 34 years, growing up through college at UT and now raising a family. Some may not consider the suburbs as being in Memphis, but one zip code is the wealthiest in the state. Just like every other big city, there are good parts and bad parts. I don’t venture to most of the bad parts.

I am actually a criminal defense attorney and have been driving downtown to my office from the suburbs for almost 10 years. Maybe some consider me lucky, but I have never had a dangerous situation. I have been to downtown and midtown to restaurants and events many times.

Sure, some bad stuff happens every once in a while in places where you hope it doesn’t. But I live in a safe neighborhood with good public schools, so I am comfortable with it.

Picked up tickets for the December 15 match up between the Vols and Tigers. Been excited about this game since it was announced. Who else will be there?

If not for this post, I wouldn't have realized we're playing down there. The ticket search -- and the requisite discussion with the wife about whether this is a "boys trip" or a "family trip" begins!

EDIT: Tickets in upper deck + hotel room at the downtown Hampton Inn have been secured!

Is that a top 10, 25, or 50 list? All big cities are violent. Something is wrong with a list that does not have Chicago, LA, and NYC in the mix.

Well generally these things are based on violent crime rate per capita. Not only is Memphis amongst the tops in that regard, the whole state of Tennessee sits at or near the top for violent crime rates. Unlike the rest of the US, Tennessee has actually seen an increase in violent crime rates since the 70’s.

The old saying "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." Those cities I mentioned are inherently more dangerous than Memphis and the whole State in general for one simple reason; in Tennessee we can legally carry and shoot back. Chicago, L.A., and NYC all want you to be unarmed and defenseless.

I’m holding out for single game tickets to go on sale. There’s a lot of buzz here with Memphis fans thinking Penny Hardaway will bring them back to the Calipari days. But they still won’t sell out the season tickets. There will be plenty of single game tickets on sale for the Tennessee game. I’m quite excited for it. Hopefully a lot of orange will fill the FedEx Forum, as we will be favored.

I'm gonna try to make it if I can

I will concede this though. When I saw several drivebys, I was in a bad part of town and was up to no good. I was quickly told by a scout I was the wrong color to be around there, and several locals also seemed genuinely concerned that some people around there would definitely take issue, although not all residents in that area would mind, there were definitely those who intended to sometimes violently keep certain folks out. The last time I left Memphis, it was with a feeling that me and my stupid new "friends" were extremely lucky that nothing happened even though none of us were familiar with the area while we were kinda pushing our luck looking for stuff that was definitely not worth putting ourselves in that situation. Sometimes I believe people have a guardian angel when they least deserve one, and fail to recognize how close they came to senseless permanent life altering consequences.

Leonard’s is still there (as of a couple years ago anyway). Use to be a great lunch spot, especially if you didn’t want to do anything at work that afternoon

The catfish at Leonard’s is probably better than their bbq but still good.

It’s popular to bag on rendezvous but the ribs are actually pretty good and it’s a cool building/vibe to experience if you haven’t been/only in for a limited time.

Central is fine but not worth the hype IMO
Commissary is very good
The best BBQ meal in the city is the pulled pork sandwich on Texas toast from BBQ Shop
