CBJ: "We're ready to own expectations"

You have to work it out in your head and let me know where we stand because I can only see us losing one game this year and still calling it a successful season. That being the A&M game. I think if we make that a close game but lose we will be alright, anything other loses and it won't just be this board that loses it's mind on this football team, and that's a shame, because it's college ball you know, where is the perspective? I guess that went out the window when the money showed up though. What is a successful season... particularly, what game/games can we lose and still call it "successful". This is going to be a interesting season for sure! Don't lose early, but don't lose late. I think I would like to have the back half of the season stacked ... not the front. here's to hoping nobody else has their ish together at the beginning of the season either. Go Vols.

There's a difference between temporary insanity, and the longer term version.

VolNation will absolutely lose its collective mind--for a few days--if we lose to Florida. Or Bama. Or maybe even Georgia. Certainly will lose it if we give up a W to Vandy, Kentucky, USCe, or Mizzou. Heck, VolNation will go temporarily insane after ANY loss; we always do...these boards are proof.

But I do not bellieve that VolNation will collectively call 2016 "unsuccessful" if we're anything less than a single loss to A&M. We could be 11-1 with a loss to anyone on our schedule (yes, even Florida), and most folks would be very pleased overall. We can even go 10-2 and, as long as we get to Atlanta, the great majority of VolNation will be pleased with the season.

There is no single game that the season rides upon. Only a select group of our family are that laser-focused on one foe. :)

everyone seems to be sure we can get to ATL with two loses. That seems to be an agreement, or at least I haven't heard disagreement. So if we go 10-2 with no trip to ATL. .. still successful?

That's a great question. I think VolNation would be more divided on that. Particularly if we don't go to Atlanta and the Florida & Bama streaks continue to grow.

Even at 10-2, that trifecta of disappointment might be enough to sour the milk.

you're being kind.

10-2, beating FL and GA, gets us to ATL. (unless either GA or FL wind up have 11 win seasons, which i just don't see obviously)

10-2 beating Ga or FL and Bama, likely gets us to ATL

10-2 beating GA or FL and aTm, maybe gets us to ATL

10-2 losing to Ga and FL, no shot at ATL.(unless the wheels fall completely off for GA and FL and i don't see that happening either)

Many of you are counting up the "Wins" like they are "SuperDelegates" or something...

Agree JP. 11-1 with the loss being to Florida would be a wildly successful season IMO. I'd take right now, especially if I knew Florida winds up with at least 2 SEC losses, which I believe will definitely happen.

A local sports show had a statistic showing how many teams in the SEC hit the 10,11 or 12 win mark over the last 10 years.
For 10 wins, I believe it was 1.7 or not even 2 Sec teams a year.
I think we hit it and I will appreciate that for the accomplishment it truly is.
Unfortunately, I'm already seeing posters gripe about "ONLY 1O WINS". What in the hell these posters base their arrogance on is beyond me but it is annoying.
I've seen the remarks about "with this talent Jones better", like that talent was just dropped off by the stork or something so now they have a right to whine.
Oh, and btw, that talent is one consensus top 5 class and one 5-7 ranked class. That's not even considered 'really impressive' in the SEC.

Excellent point! When our whiners are complaining about our latest level of commits, they forget WHO landed the previous classes. When they place demands on win totals due to our level of talent?...:loco:

Yeah, I wonder how many posters that pointed out that our good recruiting classes were ONLY the second, third or fifth best in the SEC, are now the exact posters stating " with this talent, no reason not to beat" - you know, the teams they said raked in better talent.

That's a concern I will have if we don't have success this year. Recruiting will be more difficult. In the past CBJ could say and did say "help put Tn back on the map", and I have heard he has told incoming freshmen they would get the chance to compete for playing time. As our roster has improved freshmen can expect limited playing time if any and red shirting may become the norm(I hope so). After 2016 I want to be able to say " come to Tn to win Championships" and not be talking about 2nd tier Bowl games.

Go Vols!
