CBJ: "We're ready to own expectations"

Truer words have never been spoken:

Georgia fans and florida fans don't need to be talking about anybody's hype. UGA has been the most hyped under performer in the country for several years. UF besides beating us hasn't been all world beaters either. Tennessee is getting the headlines because based on talent they should be good. It will be settled on the field not on twitter or message boards. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

Well, expectations around here are win out. Don't lose a game, so you better be ready no questions if that's what your plan is.

I don't think that's accurate. Very few posters, actually primarily only one poster who nobody takes serious, has said the expectation that Tennessee "wins out" this year with a 15-0 National Championship season. Most expectations are 11-1, 10-2 or 9-3 with a trip to the SECCG per the overwhelming majority of VN posters.

What game do you think we can lose and get away with it is the interesting question. I've been dwelling on this.

My $.02...

I think we could actually lose to both A&M and Bama and still be okay to make it to ATL--so long as we win the east games vs FL/GA and run the table on the rest. I think FL 1) Loses to LSU and 2) discovers that trip to Arkansas is no cake walk either. UGA 1) loses to Ole Miss and 2) Awbrin may be due for a bounce back as well--and never underestimate a frosh QB's untimely mistakes. Happens to the best of them. It's a real possibility that UGA rolls into the UT game w/ 2 losses (boy, would the bloom be off of Kirby's rose then!). Add to each team a loss to the Vols which I'm assuming in this scenario, and we're set.

So as long as we beat both FL/GA, I think the rest of the schedule should shake out okay. Of course, beating A&M as well (or Bama for that matter), which I think we'll win at least one of those, puts it all to rest.

Wouldn't trade rosters/coaches with any other team in the conference this year--can't remember the last time I felt that way.

The Vols learned some tough lessons last year, Bama was not overrated( losing to Ole Miss was a fluke) and teams don't lay down. Your can beat on a team all day but as long as it's a one possession game anything can happen.

Setting the mark for success would be to compete at a level of play that will defeat Clemson. I expect they will be our toughest game(if they can get to the playoffs). Not too many on our schedule can be dismissed(that # has increased), several will most likely go down to the wire and we will need to have a compete game. The good news is that no longer will we need to play a perfect game while at the same time expecting mistakes from our opponents.

The bad news for all the teams we play this year, they will need to play mistake free football(our defense will force the issue) while we become lazy(our Captains won't allow lazy).

Time to raise the bar.

Own it.

Jump higher Vols.

i think you can lose 2. GA or FL aren't going to go 11-1.

both will wind up at worst 8-4, probably 9-3?

so if you're looking to pick losses...aTm and Bama are the two you'd pick if you had to pick 2. lose those 2, win the rest, and i'll see you in ATL.

I don't think UT can get to ATL without beating UF. UF's schedule is just TOO well laid out. The only possibility that they face two ranked teams in consecutive weeks is UGA followed by Arkansas. Otherwise, they alternate tough games with weak opponents and they've scheduled a bye week headed into those two games.

9/3 UMASS
9/10 KENTUCKY
9/17 NORTH TEXAS
9/24 AT TENNESSEE
10/1 AT VANDERBILT
10/8 LSU
10/15 MISSOURI
10/22 BYE WEEK
10/29 GEORGIA
11/5 AT ARKANSAS
11/12 SOUTH CAROLINA
11/19 PRESBYTERIAN
11/26 AT FLORIDA STATE

UT has a brutal stretch. IMO, UF cannot own the tie breaker vs UT if UT is to make the CG.

UGA gets Auburn and Ole Miss from the West. I think they'll lose to UF as well. If so, UT could lose two out of the three between UGA, TAM, and Bama.

One of the few schedule positives for UT is that UGA travels to Ole Miss the week before playing UT. It will be a tough game and UGA won't have any secrets on D after that game.

If UT goes 3-1 in that stretch though..... it could get really, really good.

yep. GA's road is tougher than FL's and slightly easier than ours.

i still say you beat FL and GA, you're playing w/house money against aTm and Bama.

I disagree that we can lose to salami this year. There is mention that we win that game this year in literally every article out for the last few months. That plus the salami bias. We could have one loss. they could have two and they would still get in. Plus the o line issues, the qb issues, and kiffen' thug life taking affect. I don't see a loss. I could maybe see getting away with am loss.

Edit. I hate typing on phone.

Good. He should own expectations. The floor for this team should be 10-2.

There is no question, finally, that the talent level in the program is there. With the exception of Alabama, we will not face a more talented team all year long, and the gap between us and Bama is closer then it has been in a decade.

IMO, it all comes down to execution. This is a team that could just as easily go 12-0 as it could 8-4. I believe that. Now, I am not naive and picking us to win the NC. Far from it. My only point is this is a playoff caliber team in the category of talent. But there was some decision making last year on part of the coaching staff that led me to be hesitant when it came to execution in the game.

If the execution and decision making improves, it could be a very special year. If the coaching staff has not learned from their mistakes, it could be a nightmare.

Watching the salami vs clemson game last year right now. I'm under the impression this season is dependent on the salami game. In order to win we are going to HAVE to have receivers that will make plays, and make plays in clutch situations with the game on the line. Hope we have better passing attack this year. This year depends on our passing game. I'm convinced of that. We will need it in the salami game which is the linch pin of the season.

Yeah, I know the younger generation is all about the florida game for good reason, but the hard truth is if you don't beat salami you go no where. You will not live up to expectations no matter if you win OR lose floriduh. That's the hard truth.

If that's the case, then why did everyone FREAK out last year after every L?

Folks expect us to win every game. Period.

You know the site will explode if we lose a single game.
