Can the Arkansas situation affect Tennessee Football?

Driving through Arkansas today, the reporters, who cover Arkansas athletics, said Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, Bobby Petrino, and Butch Jones had contacted Arkansas about the vacancy. They said,as of now, Malzahn is a no go because of the buyout that Auburn has in place. They said Jimmy Sexton was pushing Butch for the job really hard.

Hard to listen to reporters or radio shows. Often, coaches use “interest” as leverage to get a better deal.

If it’s Butch, I would feel sorry for him. The fan base will turn on him by the end of the first year. He won’t be able to recruit. He will be in a far worse situation.

Butch needs a Sun Belt team. One with low expectations.

If Mike Leach or Lane Kiffin has interest and Arkansas hires Butch they are mentally ill.

Hopefully Gus takes the Arky job and The Pirate takes over at Auburn.

I could see Leach pissing Saban off every couple of years at least.

As things stand now, I wonder if anyone could do well in Ark before they were fired. If anyone has be in a worse funk than us, it's them.

Living as we have, in "the glass house" over the past few years, we should not throw stones.... Has you seem to have forgotten, we have made some really unspectacular hires in the recent past.

Explain how that is casting stones... did I say we haven't been a joke? The difference is TN's expectation of winning is validated by almost 100yrs of success. But I didn't go there. They are going to fire a HC less than 2yrs in to hire a career OL coach? That would be quite a questionable decision for any program. Much less one who face real challeneges in being competitive due to their unique challenges.

Arkansas was stupid to hire the worst coach they could find, but "wised-up" quickly-did what any thinking person would have done and fired him. I know there are a lot of Dooley fans still poking around, but sometimes coach worship has to be set aside for the good of the program. We went through the same thing, I hope (as an SEC team) they can learn from our mistake, don't hire a carbon copy of boy butch!!! Hire a real Football coach, and not a life coach! We should be able to post a big W against AR next year-or at least we better be....

I hope they hire a terrible coach and continue to stink. I'm ok if the sec became the ACC, everyone stinks except TN. I agree that TN serves as the example of what not to do and I don't blame them for canning Morris, he was terrible. If they're smart they find someone with a unique offense that gives them a competitive advantage.

Guess I misunderstood what you were saying. It seems to happen a lot for me. Sorry I I misunderstood what you were saying and how you meant it.

Bye the bye ---- can someone tell me how a poster can be a "well-known member" in less than two months???

No clue how that happens. To be fair I have been on the site before in the past but on occassion just have to cancel everything because my love for TN can be an addiction.

I would love to see Pittman leave Georgia. It would probably help us in Oline recruiting quite a bit. I do think Leach would do decent in Arkansas. Idk if he would win big but he would be hell to prepare for. I would really be curious to see what would happen if Arkansas got leach and broke the bank on the defensive side of the ball for a DC and assistants.

Fulmer was Fulmers best recruiter. We had the no.3 class when Hamilton made his move. Agree losing Garner wasn't a good thing on the recruiting front but the TN brand was still easily salable

Had the number three class when Hamilton fired Fulmer? I don't think so. Fulmer's last class was well short of 25, and the boo birds were scaring off recruits.

Fact bro. Fact. He had a loaded class. We didn't go from consistent top 5's to 29's because Garner left.. we were still consistently top 5-10 outside of a few years where, admittedly, Fulmer took his foot off the gas on the trail. But the year he was fired we had the no.3 rated classe the day he was let go. There are plenty of people here on and VQ that can back me up on that too.

Also, that class had Taj Boyd and Bryce Petty as QB's. Both of which went on to be college stud QB's. Many argue that Boyd was Dabo's key to turning that program around. Had Hammy not let Fulmer go Boyd would have never gone there and maybe Clemson wouldn't have taken our place in the pecking order of college football.

Yeah, I remember Kiffin telling Taj Boyd to look around because he did not fit the system. He lit it up at Clemson. Then he ran off Petty, who had great success at Baylor. What about the year before, that is the last class of Fulmer's signees? I recall he signed only 18 players, and they were not that highly rated. He did not even fill the class.

He had some bad years there but that last class was loaded. I have no evidence to support this thought but I feel Fulmer had realized he had slipped a little bit and had regained that fire in his belly for one last ride. When he was let go we were a couple classes from bring SEC Champ competitors. We had some holes but were not completely devoid of talent

Arkansas is finished as an SEC program. AR has very little talent in state and has to recruit TX to do well. But with Texas A&M now in the SEC and Texas moving again, they are outrecruited in all directions.

6-6 as a ceiling? Even that may be too high.

No, when they had Petrino, they were getting coaching, and not a lot of those players made NFL rosters.

They've got Memphis, Dallas, and Louisiana as prime recruiting grounds. Cherry pick some guys nationwide and they're cooking again. Arkansas itself always has some under the radar talent. It seems like an NFL TE comes from that state every year.

And OC... the post insinuated he was only an OL coach his entire career before becoming a HC which is not accurate. Hiring Sam Pittman as HC would not be equivalent to Fulmer becoming the HC at TN.

Pittman has been a head coach/ ass head coach before, plus years more experience than PF had. I think looking down on somebody for being a OL coach when hiring a coach is a mistake. Look at how many OC and DC become Head Coaches and fail.. Now look a Position Coaches that are hired as HC and fail..

Its all a gamble, I would gamble with Pittman over a lot of OC/DC
