can our front 7 stop the run

After McDowell and Kirkland we don't really know what we have. Sapp looked pretty good at times last year. IDK what happened to Bates. He was a top 100 recruit on all the services. There are several unknowns too. Don't really expect much from the freshmen, but we'll see.

Jumper has came a long way. I don't think we're hurting at LB(knock on wood). It's just the consistency of the interior DL that is the major concern.

I had/have strong doubts about the LB's. After or during spring, Shoop came out and said he like his LB's and depth at the position. I think there's a lot of talent on the DL if they stay healthy. I think there are some quality players in the secondary if Warren is as much of an upgrade as I think he is. But besides DKjr and McDowell, UT doesn't really have a LB that has proven they can play in the SEC... and both of them have been injury prone.
If you're talking about getting most talent and speed on the field at one time, I'd look at sliding Todd Kelly down to OLB and put Warrior in his spot. Shoop pretty much said OLB position is a glorified DB position now because of spread offenses.

i think were ok on the back end. there are still a lot of talent to replace and talented players recovering from bad injuries in the front 7. if there is a problem it will show up here. the LB are also slow and we are thin there too.

I've got two words for you. Strength Coach. We have one now and he is a good one. It also doesn't hurt that this will be this unIt's second year under Shoop.

The answer will be a resounding YES in my opinion.

Also didn't we give Heisman Trophy Winner Henry trouble just two years ago?

I think the common denominator between our poor play and injuries is not having strength coach. So, again, YES. Sorry for being too lazy to just edit my other reply lol

If you can't stop the run in this league you're in for a long and frustrating season. CBS has promised a more aggressive "D" with some scheme tweaks. We'll probably see a 3-4 vs. pro style "O"s and a 4-2-5 vs. spread teams.

Go watch a replay of the Florida game of him running stride for stride with Scarlett out of the backfield and making a beautiful defensive play to swat the ball away....

My oldest son and I have talked about this for years. The speed seems to be there on all of the defensive back side. For some reason they have just been SLOW recognizing what the play demands and how and where to react. Now,is this a lack of smarts, a lack of film study on tendencies, or a lack of coaching?

DKjr will play in the NFL, IMO! If Thig doesn't do anything with the talent he has this year, I'd be open to replacing him. His recruiting has even fallen off.
you hit the nail on the head we should have replace him 3 years ago

It's impossible for coaches to teach and train players that are hurt so much.

When players are hurt and can't train and learn consistently then they just can't work hard to take the next step upwards.

It's not always the coaches fault because nobody can control injuries and forced surgeries.

Hopefully the Rock has a magic potion that will keep all our players healthy for a change.

That alone would be a huge step in the right direction.

VFL...GBO!!!

They can watch film and learn what to do laying flat of their backs. Most of the time many of these kids just don't seem to know what to do if it requires thinking and not just reacting.

that play was grate but the back had to slow down . i like Jumper he should have got a game ball for FL. but he is still slow for a SEC line backer.

They will stop the run unless we end the year playing linebacker sized guys playing DT and 3rd and 4th string LBs due to injuries.

Everyone is talking about slow LB's. I doubt that Bates and Berry are slow. I'm sure they can beat most in a 40 yard dash, but unfortunately foot speed isn't the only thing needed to be an SEC football player. But, coach is saying Bates is doing better, maybe he'll play this year.
Bates has played lights out on special teams. i do not understand why he is not playing more

I'd be willing to bet that Sapp is faster than TKJr. Plus, Kelly has slimmed down from 208 to 200 even. I don't believe he's strong enough at 5'11 200 to be effective at OLB. I'd like to see Bituli at MLB and have DKJr slide outside with Sapp backing him up there.

As far as Warrior, I agree 100%....he HAS to be on the field this year. The staff did a very poor job getting him ready to play last year as a freshman. He's gotta be out there this year as a starter and as much as possible if we're gonna optimize our talent on defense imho.

If we are running the 3-4, we will get slaughtered. We have 4-3 personnel.

I think jumper started to play really well this season

Jumper is not physically talented enough to play against top end SEC talent. I think he was consistent... and just looked better against the weak back end of the schedule.

It is a shame that he doesn't have the raw physical talent because he has everything else you would want.

our play in this area over the past 2 years has been more troublesome. Butch laid a egg with his last experiment . our million bucks DC was a dud, lets hope this works out.

Shoop was a dud? Shoop did not develop nor recruit the players he was left with... then it got 100 times worse with the injuries... again something he hasn't had time to correct. Jones' D staff prior to the changes was a couple of mid-major coaches and a couple of guys who had already proven they weren't SEC quality while at UGA.

grate point, but it takes 2 years for that to full work its way through the program. Shoop for me is the big question mark. if he is as good as advertised , why did he not know the players on his side of the ball were out of shape. how did this big problem get over looked. i think Jones has made all the moves he can to fix the problem. what i am worried about is Shoop my be the problem.
