can our front 7 stop the run

Phillips, Kongbo, and Taylor are all very talented. Vickers has been decent on the inside. Shy is very good when healthy. Hopefully our new line coach can get K-Mac to play up to his potential. The talent is there.
it is there if it stays health and player are developed and step up. i not sure at LB are they that talented

I had/have strong doubts about the LB's. After or during spring, Shoop came out and said he like his LB's and depth at the position. I think there's a lot of talent on the DL if they stay healthy. I think there are some quality players in the secondary if Warren is as much of an upgrade as I think he is. But besides DKjr and McDowell, UT doesn't really have a LB that has proven they can play in the SEC... and both of them have been injury prone.
I think jumper started to play really well this season

After McDowell and Kirkland we don't really know what we have. Sapp looked pretty good at times last year. IDK what happened to Bates. He was a top 100 recruit on all the services. There are several unknowns too. Don't really expect much from the freshmen, but we'll see.

Butch has brought in a ton of talent on the DL along with LBs. The fact that this question is being asked is troublesome.
our play in this area over the past 2 years has been more troublesome. Butch laid a egg with his last experiment . our million bucks DC was a dud, lets hope this works out.

i like Jumper he is a gamer ..but he is slow..it is hard for him to cover backs running passing routs out of the backfield

Go watch a replay of the Florida game of him running stride for stride with Scarlett out of the backfield and making a beautiful defensive play to swat the ball away....

Everyone is talking about slow LB's. I doubt that Bates and Berry are slow. I'm sure they can beat most in a 40 yard dash, but unfortunately foot speed isn't the only thing needed to be an SEC football player. But, coach is saying Bates is doing better, maybe he'll play this year.

McDowell isn't either. When your third team is playing, you look slow

It's impossible for coaches to teach and train players that are hurt so much.

When players are hurt and can't train and learn consistently then they just can't work hard to take the next step upwards.

It's not always the coaches fault because nobody can control injuries and forced surgeries.

Hopefully the Rock has a magic potion that will keep all our players healthy for a change.

That alone would be a huge step in the right direction.

VFL...GBO!!!

I believe Sapp who very fast and bituilli will excel this year.....ignont should be a beast next year

If they can't we better slow down the offense and try to control the ball because we'll get gashed like last season. I think Kirkland should be vastly improved and McDowell and Sapp seem solid. If we don't have a lot of injuries should be a group that does well. I think the ends are excellent hopefully the tackles will do more if we can avoid injuries.

If you only look at results from last year the answer is absolutely not. We were below average at every level, including the back end.

However, the talent is there this year and much of it is very experienced. Depth is definitely a concern to be sure. But I believe the coaching changes will play a big part in a much improved defense and Shoop can only be much better from a disastrous first year. I'm actually fairly positive about it at this point, but of course it's July.

Get healthy, stay mostly healthy and this defense has the potential to play consistently like we did the second half of the Florida beat-down.

i think were ok on the back end. there are still a lot of talent to replace and talented players recovering from bad injuries in the front 7. if there is a problem it will show up here. the LB are also slow and we are thin there too.

They aren't worried about it in July. Right now, they are just worried about getting stronger, increasing flexibility, and getting their grades right.

How do you know the LB are slow? Or are you the guy lurking around campus with a stopwatch?

We better hope so. GT has a good run game, Florida returns 3 RBs who got a lot of carries, GA is absolutely loaded, KY has Benny Snell who ran for over 1000, Missouri has Crockett who ran for over 1000 plus Witter, Vandy and SC both return their top 2 RBs, Bama has 6, yes 6, RBs who could arguably start for most teams, Southern Miss isn't bad in the run game, and then there's the Guice for LSU. I am sure this is why Hoke was brought in. Shoop definitely has his work cut out for him. I bet he doesn't use the Orange Swarm quote this year.

UT uses the GPS tracking system. I would love to see the numbers on the LBs if anyone knows them. Byrd is the fastest on the team at 23.7 mph, followed by Warrior 21.6, Osborne 20.9 and Kelly at 20.8. Kongbo was the fastest lineman at 18.4 mph. Speed kills.
