Butch Jones, the Intern...

Logical rebuttal but the question remains, why are our recent coaching searches such abortions? Let's not get revisionist and say they were not that bad. Bad Ad's? Fulmer just inherited a list from Currie and started going down it until someone said yes. Hopefully this method ends up being just the ticket for success.

Fulmer didn’t inherit ish from Currie. He took his time, reset the entire search, took his time and got his man. Pruitt, Tucker and Steele were nowhere to be found on Currie’s “list”.

Maybe I'm wrong, but, I almost think this is a slap in the face of UT football. I mean, we all know where and what Jones came from. So, it might be that he never truly grasped the SEC culture. To be expelled as a head coach and taking an interim job as an intern is understandable. I guess it is done all the time. But to take a lowly interim job with an historical deep, deep, rival. Well, this smacks of revenge. Probably more a slap to the face of the fans than anyone. Maybe Butch learned enough about SEC culture to give to give us the finger, in one of those passive-aggressive yankee ways.

you're reading too much in to it.

a) he didn't have any real offers to be a head coach anywhere (was rumored to be taking an unpaid position at Knoxville Catholic)
b) there's probably some truth to the fact that Sexton brokered a deal with Saban to get Jones a paycheck so there would be no failure to mitigate clause exercised against his client, while also ensuring that the new job wouldn't eat in to the buyout money too much.

past that, it's just sad and funny. #nopride

the only thing this does for our program is provide more evidence that we've been doing this football thing wrong for a long time.

and, since Nov. 26th, steps have been taken to rectify those mistakes, so hopefully they work.

O.K.. I'll buy that. It's a better way to look at it.

You may be right about it being revenge. But there shouldn't be whining from Vols fans about it. Given the constant and on-going putdowns of Butch, why shouldn't he stick a knife in his haters and twist it? Kick and beat a dog enough and it will bite you. You end up getting what you give. Even the Good Book says so.

him being an intern at Bama does nothing for/to me. if that's the best he's got for revenge, then it's no wonder he lost virtually every big game he coached in.

bottom line, if revenge is a motivating factor for him...he needs to try harder.

Coaches is a profession. The sooner you recognize that the better you will be. Look at the folks leaving Bama to come work at Tennessee in basically the same roles.

There is loyalty only to the school they are currently at and maybe a little towards their alma mater.

You are making too much of this. This is more than likely him taking a position to keep himself active at the college level. And intern or not - being associated with Alabama football and Saban will look good on the resume.

When the coaching carousel starts next year there will be different coaches to slam and he can build on this to get back in the mix for jobs be them coordinator or head coaching positions.

Then why do you keep Butch harping?

It would depend upon how bad he did not work out. Tennessee has become career suicide for head coaches.

There is a reason why no big name HC would take the job and it is not just about the money.

Yeah UT has hired coaches on the fast track to the top only for them to not be good here. Lol

Personally I think you are on to something. Let's face it as a coach Butch is a nimrod but he also appears to have little man disorder. He is the same guy that was going to take a staff position at Knox Catholic well I guess this is a step up for him.

I prefer to think of this as a baseball trade............. Lyle Jones to Alabama for Jeremy Pruitt and Chris Weinke.

Simply a favor to Sabans agent. Butch hopes this will propel him into another high profile job from which he can retire after he runs that program into the ground. He will have zero to do w bama football other than wearing their team gear

100% correct.

This makes a certain amount of sense. Butch gets to thumb his nose at the UTAD and VN that rejected him and Nick gets to twist it a little deeper.

Wow....from $4.1mm annually as the head of the program at Tennessee, to $35k as an anonymous intern at Alabama....

So the article says that Butch's Bama job fulfills his duty to mitigate damages under his UT contract. I'm not so sure about that. His contract says that he has to use reasonable and diligent efforts to obtain "comparable" employment...
