Brian Maurer throwing shade on twitter

Well, he is still 'on the team", and no one on this forum is. Maybe he has EARNED the right to say what he feels.
Everyone wants a leader when there isn’t one until a leader steps up for the first time. Then it’s taken as disrespect. Say what you will about WHAT he said but THATS the kind of guy a TEAM will get behind.

Lesson number one you should know when you enter the workplace after college. Your work WILL be criticized, sometimes fairly, sometimes not; but it is part of being an adult.
The wise adult is the one who a) can filter out the valid points and learn and grow from them and 2) remain the most honest critic of themself.
That said, I have very little criticism of the players themselves. There are people responsible for teaching them however that need to look closely at how that process is proceeding.

Eh.
I can understand why he's frustrated, whether its pointed in the right direction or not. Im not sure why people are miffed that he's voicing it. Heck, half the pissed off from message board fans are pointed the wrong direction as well.

Maybe we should determine if this was an isolated response to some idiot or a universal message to the whole fanbase before people start trying to find where they stashed their pitchfork after their last mob outing....

Does anyone know for sure?
I'm fairly confident Maurer finally had enough. After seeing and hearing dozens and dozens of negative comments. Finally went ras-le-bol, as the French say.

Players are taught not to interact in this way. Not to respond on line or in any social media. No matter what.

For him to violate that guideline and do it anyway, that's a pretty clear sign he was overwhelmed by the volume of it all, and finally couldn't remain silent any longer.

Nobody should really care about an out of context tweet from a 21 year old.

This is what happens when you lose. We need to win and it starts with replacing the captain if this sinking ship. The fans AND players deserve better. We’re not enemies.

Do you know if this was a message to the entire fanbase or directed at some twitter idiot that said something he didn't like?

He can say anything he wants. It’s still arrogant and
I’ll-advised and we certainly are in our rights to offer an opinion on it. Many of us have invested quite a bit in UT football over the years, likely more than BM’s has in short time here.

So you're basically saying you're guessing and you don't know...

I don't mind about the guy standing up for his boys, but after God knows how many tens of thousands of dollars I've spent, miles I've traveled, games I've watched -- and let me tell you, a lot of the recent ones have been about as rewarding as watching CSPAN2 at 3 AM in the morning because I can't find the remote and I'm too lazy to change the channel -- I don't care if someone says they're not "my team." I've devoted enough of my life to Tennessee athletics to know the Vols are very much my football team. If they weren't, I would have checked the hell out ages ago.

I would not consider BM’s criticism of the fans being a leader. The opposite in fact. He’s a bench warmer. This is the equivalent if of the Vandy girl giving a pep talk at halftime to the rest of their football team.

I like what he said. People on here that criticize these players each week, he is talking to you.
Maybe quit losing so much and we won’t. He gets paid to play a game for our entertainment. When we aren’t entertained because they suck, what does he expect? You think the NFL is without criticism?

So we have a “friendly rivalry” with the gators and a heated rivalry with our fans?
GBO!!

It's the same degenerates, in all these places.

The most active Tennessee fans are (a) on these forums (this or the other site, or both), (b) on call-in radio shows, and (c) on twitter and facebook. We're all the same people.

Not everyone is on all three, but it's mostly overlap. Even if you're only on VN.com, that doesn't mean the guys to your left and right aren't on both, or all three, or all four.

So I _am_ addressing the fools in the Tennessee football part of the twitter-verse when I post here. And I'm addressing the folks who call in on 104.5 the Zone or the Knoxville stations or Finebaum. We're all here together.
Check your ego.

What you, or I discuss here has zero bearing in the the players, coaches, or program as a whole. Those who choose to direct tweet to a player are a different story. That is a very real problem, and one we have seen before with clowns like Sabanochio.

You obviously don't grasp people that age, or the technology they use. I was just told by my 21 year old football player that forums like this, and talk radio are "boomer methods of communication". They do not provide what guys that age want...instant feedback ad gratification. He laughed at the assertion any player cares what happens on boards and forums. Get over yourself.

I disagree. I don’t like WHAT he said any more than anyone else but the more I think about it the more I like what he did. He just “jumped over the goal posts” defending his teammates and program from those tearing it down. You may not respect that but I assure you if you were wearing shoulder pads this coming weekend, you would have a different view knowing he just went to bat for YOU

I do want to comment on the people who are excited to see a player fired up. Contrast him to Juan Jennings after the Georgia State loss:

“I’m going to let these guys know that what happened last weekend is unacceptable, and it won’t happen again,” Jennings stated. “We just continue to prepare for this weekend, and as a leader, I make sure they just keep their heads up.”

“This past Saturday, I feel like this team, they weren’t juiced up on the sideline. As a leader, I take full responsibility for that. I gotta be out there, and I gotta have hands in the air 24/7. As a leader, I admit that I did not do that. This week and from here on out, that’s what I’m going to focus on doing is making sure that this team knows we have a lot of fight left in us, and we’re not going to give up.” - Jennings

Now that is leadership. If Maurer wants to fill that Juan Jennings role then he needs to get his teammates fired up, not turn on the fans.

You watch CSPAN2 at 3am?... 😱

Hell yes, they used to show the British House of Commons at night (we're talking 80s and 90s, I don't know now) and that whole thing was wild. A room full of politicians openly mocking one another with their backing benches jeering "YEAAAH YEAAAAH" while a guy in a chair sat and looked as bored as he possibly could. Occasionally, they'd argue so much said guy in chair would exasperatedly pound on something and say "look let's calm down" and everyone would laugh and somehow Britain continued to operate. That stuff was solid gold.
