Barnes is a good coach. I’m glad we didn’t lose him . . . But he took a hit in my opinion. I lost a ton of the esteem that I precisely had for him. He was ready to leave - another “dream job” type of crap. We’ve heard that before.
And then he pulls out the God stuff. “I prayed . . .” and when UCLA didn’t cut a big enough check, Barnes knew he was meant to stay. Whatever. If you’re going to try to be honest, be completely honest. You decision hinged upon the money. Period. Not some divine sign or decision.
Barnes has lost a lot of my trust. Will take some time and a lot of success to win it back. It’ll probably never be 100% again regardless (if it ever was in the first place). I’ll be there for the team regardless, but what happens when the next “blue blood” school comes sniffing around? If their pockets are deep enough, he’ll be gone. It’s a business, I know. Just don’t try to sell yourself as something special when you’re no dffferent from all the other mercenaries out there.
Grateful for the success Barnes has helped bring, but it’d be like your girlfriend saying that she would have left with the other guy after the party but he just didn’t buy her a big enough ring. She WOULD have left, but when he pulled out that tiny fake diamond, she prayed and knew the Lord wanted her to stay.
Yeah, right.
