Barnes said he would be at UCLA if buyout was paid

Maybe you thought we were agreeing when we were not.

I thought keeping him was better than hiring another coach. Something we have missed more than we ve hit over the years.

That didnt change with him saying what some already knew to be true after the fact. The only way this matters is if he curls up waiting to retire and quits doing his job because UCLAs AD is an idiot. I dont think for a second he has that level of integrity.

Do you think with all that has transpired, the fan base will be as patient today as it would’ve been before the UCLA stuff?

You make a lot of assumptions. Forbes? Really? Why not George Quarles too? Good grief this is a top 10 program hiring a mid major also ran? Thank God you have no influence.
George Quarles coaches football...would be a terrible hire. I said “pushing for him”, which means I like his potential and would be ok with that hire. As far as my “influence”?
None of us have it on this message board...hate to be the one to break that news. Should’ve been family. 😔

That’s not good. It is the beginning of the end. He should not have answered that question!! You don’t have to lie. Just say I’m the coach at Tennessee this is where I want to be blah blah blah, but don’t say that!!!
He’s 65. The beginning of the end is redundant.

Just another chapter in the book “Just when you think Tennessee Basketball will be sane, something crazy happens”.

Barnes is a good coach. I’m glad we didn’t lose him . . . But he took a hit in my opinion. I lost a ton of the esteem that I precisely had for him. He was ready to leave - another “dream job” type of crap. We’ve heard that before.

And then he pulls out the God stuff. “I prayed . . .” and when UCLA didn’t cut a big enough check, Barnes knew he was meant to stay. Whatever. If you’re going to try to be honest, be completely honest. You decision hinged upon the money. Period. Not some divine sign or decision.

Barnes has lost a lot of my trust. Will take some time and a lot of success to win it back. It’ll probably never be 100% again regardless (if it ever was in the first place). I’ll be there for the team regardless, but what happens when the next “blue blood” school comes sniffing around? If their pockets are deep enough, he’ll be gone. It’s a business, I know. Just don’t try to sell yourself as something special when you’re no dffferent from all the other mercenaries out there.

Grateful for the success Barnes has helped bring, but it’d be like your girlfriend saying that she would have left with the other guy after the party but he just didn’t buy her a big enough ring. She WOULD have left, but when he pulled out that tiny fake diamond, she prayed and knew the Lord wanted her to stay.

Yeah, right.

Ok but you still didn’t give 1. Also how can the money be disrespectful towards you?
I don't know how to explain it any more than I already have. Would you go in to your boss tomorrow after getting a huge raise and tell him that you would take the other job especially knowing you didn't quite live up to the expectations of your job this last year.? I think there's times you keep your mouth shut.

I wouldn’t suggest you, in front of a crowd, embarrassing your employer like Barnes did today. Your ass would be out the door next day with a police escort.

Barnes didn’t embarrass UT today.

But that was surely an interesting answer to a yes or no question.

Barnes must not be that smart either. This is a situation where saying less would have been wise. Telling the entire fan base that he was ready to split but the check just wasn’t big enough, so he decided he’d hang around until something better shows up. The “dream job” excuse, as true as it might be, should have be a giant red flag for him with a fan base that still suffers from paranoia after being dumped by Lane Kiffin in the middle of the night.

Any rookie PR representative (or just a moderately self aware person of average intelligence) should have known better than to make a statement like that.

Sorry but Phil is not all happy and skipping around in candy land. Those things make him seeth inside because he does love Tennessee.

Man ain’t been happy since the 90’s. And then only briefly.

Know some things and Quarles would be a very poor hire.

Someone asked earlier if the fan base would be more or less patient with Barnes now that we’ve heard that our university was where he wants to be only because UCLA didn’t offer enough cash. The answer is that he doesn’t deserve more patience or benefit of the doubt. He threw whatever he might have stored up for possible tough times in the future when he opened his mouth and told us that he would have dropped the VOLS if the price had been right.

Well, we may never know for sure but I suspect Boyd and Fulmer were very embarrassed and are major pissed off. If you don’t see that, good luck in life.

I don't see how anyone can disagree with this one, tbh. At the very least, he robbed Fulmer of the win. What should have been a big "save" for the new AD now gets chalked up to "UCLA wasn't willing to pay." The other stuff is debatable, I'm not sure this point is.

If asked, and my boss along with everyone already knew, and it was open to the public so literally everyone could know..........then yea why not. It’s not like my boss is going to get upset, he knew as it was going on.........he still thought I was enough of an asset to offer more and keep me. Why in the world would my boss be upset now? He wanted me, he still does, and he already knew what I said when asked.
