Bad hire

Two 4th down tries and a ridiculous on-side kick in the SECOND QUARTER....were desperation signals to the team that their coach was out of answers and had essentially thrown his playbook away and given up. A more mature experienced coach would have called the team together...called for calm, not PANIC, and let the boys just go out and play football.
I don't know where you go from here, but this guy isn't showing much coaching. Basic, fundamental football coaching to avoid give-aways would have kept this game a whole lot closer. Fundamentals count, regardless of who your opponent is. Florida sucks. They're not a competitive SEC team any more than we are.
That said, when you HAND THEM 24 points, and your head coach panics and QUITS...not only will you not win...you're going to be embarrassed....A LOT.
Jeremy Banks needs to wake up Monday morning and start looking for another place to play before he gets killed.
I'm willing to give Pruitt a lot of time to recruit and coach his own players and show that despite his own inexperience as head coach, that just maybe he has the makings of becoming a good one so far..I'm not seeing it.
Line can’t block, QB can’t recognize a blitz and holds on too too long, lb’s are slow, best returner is a DB, Db’s are inexperienced and we run on most all first downs. Gotta try something...

The team was unprepared and overmatched tonight. We, simply put, were not ready for Florida, and that is on the coaching staff. When CJP was hired the base assumed that his previous successes would guarantee excellence here in team prep, player motivation, and flawless gameday execution. However, the rank buffoonery that was on display tonight was an embarrassment to our program that exceeds the worst antics of CBJ or the benign ineptitude of Bill Battle. Nobody expected miracles, but THIS?! I expect Phillip Fulmer was as suprised as most of us are incredulous.
I'm fairly certain they have gone over with the Offensive Line the importance of protecting the quarterback and opening up holes for the running back. I even bet they discussed with the skill players the importance of protecting the ball (i.e. not using your free arm to punch the ball out as you get ready to cross the goal line), and probably mentioned to the quarterbacks the need to look for your receivers and not those trying to tackle you. Just my thoughts.

Tennessee should have went with the 1st instincts and hired Shiano...Could have kept Butch for another year..Im so serious..OC is worst than Scott from last year..

I think it's funny that everyone keeps bringing up how the team is unprepared and blaming CJP, when that is exactly what CJP keeps saying is his challenge this year... to teach these kids to prepare right.

This team had previously not been taught how to practice or prepare for the task they face. That culture is not gonna just change because we, or CJP want it to. Sadly its gonna take a year or two to purge that mentality.

Watching this team, (a side from maybe Banks, and Jennings)I dont see anyone that is even playing to meet minimum expectations, let alone anyone trying to step up and be a playmaker. Our freshmen DBs have shown some flashes of that fire but it's hard to be a freshman and be an emotional leader.

To expect this team to come out and magically put it all together and play the way want them to in year one is just delusional.

We've beaten Florida once in the past 13 years, and I firmly believe that was because we had a handful of NFL talent upperclassmen that put the team on their shoulders and got it done. There arent any players on this team capable of doing that, at this point.

Yup because players, in general, are never the issue (sarcasm.) Butch created this mess give the staff time to try and clean it up. Easy to blame 1st time head coach, ever think maybe the problem runs a little deeper? Dumb thread.

Not even close.

We have too many overrated Butch 4-stars on this team.

We were a 4-8 team last year for a reason, and recruiting/player development was probably the biggest reason.

Pruitt has had just 9 months or so to try and right the ship, and its just not enough time to do that.

I'm not even upset about last night, because the selling point of early playing time to the recruits in Neyland last night is a no-brainer.

The sad truth is we were better last year

I'll give Pruitt 5 years to get us really competitive which, to me, = being in position to have a shot to win every game, the kids playing obvious fundamentally sound football, top 10 recruiting classes that look and play like they're top 10. This is waaaay too soon to be talking crazy talk.

Pruitt. Bad hire? Maybe but not likely. HC growing pains? NO DOUBT.

VA Tech just got curb stomped by 0-3 Old Dominion yesterday in HC Fuente’s 3rd year giving up record numbers of yards and making the entire history of ODU’s fb program in a single afternoon. Fuente just announced he dismissed yet another player from the team in YEAR 3.

And has been posted elsewhere Kelly is 0-3 at UCLA and Frost also 0-3 at Nebraska after being humiliated by Michigan yesterday.

We would have taken any of these 3 HCs in a heartbeat yet would be facing the same sitsuation on the Hill as we are under CJP.

You saying Feunte Kelly Frost suddenly don’t know how to coach? Or Pruitt with his fist full of DC NC rings at 3 different programs?

Better check yourselves.

Blood letting takes time but is necessary. Volfans who haven’t got the stomach for it should turn their heads for the next 3 years.

Did Pruitt turn the ballover 6 times? This wasn’t his fault. He’s ultimately responsible, but this wasn’t on him.

@Freak - You may want to sticky this for those that need it.

Just remember, things will get better. Maybe not this season, but they will get better.

Let's look at the results so far for some other newly hired coaches:

Texas A+M - Jimbo Fisher: 2-2 (0-1 SEC)

Nebraska - Scott Frost: 0-3

UCLA - Chip Kelly: 0-3

Florida State - Willie Taggart 2-2 (0-2 ACC)

Arkansas - Chad Morris 1-3 (0-1 SEC)

Arizona - Kevin Sumlin 2-2 (1-0 PAC12)

And one NFL team just because:
Oakland Raiders - Jon Gruden 0-2

4 of the coaches above were high on the list of many people on this site and their results don't look any better than CJP. Remember that most of these postions come open because a team has had some bad seasons. It's not like CJP showed up to a disciplined and loaded team with on field leaders. I think we saw both some good and poor coaching decisions tonight, but I liked that CJP was willing to take some chances (onside kick, 4th down attempts). Pruitt may turn out to be a bad hire, but lets give him some time and hope that once he has his own players on the field we start winning and he's our coach for a long time. Who would want to go through another coaching search? Do you think people will be knocking down the door to come here to be the 5th coach in 10 years? This is going to be another hard year to be a UT fan, but lets not start burning mattresses just yet.
Fisher lost to Bama and Clemson.

the major mistake we made was not sealing the deal with duke coach when lane left. idiot ad didn't want him to bring his own staff. we have been on a **** ride since then and this new clown looks no better. we are not better in any area of the game from last year.

I don't agree with everything you said, but I do agree that at this point I think this team is far worse than last year's team
