Automobilia etc....

It sounds like the system you have in the car is pretty sophisticated. It has a valve that will bypass the muffler at full throttle for extra sound. The idea is for it to be reasonable for regular driving and loud for when you punch it.

It may be hustling backwards to replace that system.

You might want to check a camaro owners forum to get better opinions.

Perhaps camaro6.com can assist.

I post on there, everyone reccomends the borla exhausts but they say be sure it supports the dual mode NPP which borla offers. Will I need to tune it after replacing the exhaust?

That makes sense though. When i start my car up it roars, but when I'm coasting on the interstate it's quiet unless I punch it then it gets really loud. Also when I downshift the automatic rev matching system is amazing it revs the car up and sounds fantastic

Regarding your question about the different exhaust options.

Cat-back - this replaces all of the piping after the catalytic converter. This includes resonators and mufflers.

Axleback - this replaces the piping after the rear axle, this would include the muffler.

Between the two, it all depends on what you are looking for. If you plan to run a high flow cat, and replace the headers, then a cat back is a great way to go. If you are just after a different sound, you should be fine with an axle back.

Regarding a tune. Typically you should not need a tune. I still recommend checking with those more familiar with the vehicle. That said if you have the means to get a tune, it's always a nice way to pick up power and make your modifications more effective.

Awesome this was very informative thank you!

No problem.

When it comes to modifications or even just repairs and maintenance I highly recommend researching thoroughly. It's good to learn what the part is, what it does, how it works, and who makes the best. Also check and see if supporting modifications are needed.

I spent a lot of money in the past on parts that were cheap, or necessitated the purchase of other parts to work right.

Now I try to research and learn as much as possible. Heck even small things like differential fluid and transmission fluid, I check and see what is best and most popular for my vehicles.

Mind you I am anal on these things, but I hate throwing away money.

Now if only I did the same on my purchase of appliances last year.

I'm the exact same way man. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way. Everything I've heard about Borla has been very positive however.

You are not making enough power to justify cat-backs. Get a good set of borla type S mufflers and call it a day.

No tune will be needed either.

A tune won't be needed until you start to do some serious bolt on mods.

If you want a serious cheap power increase, and mpg increase as well, look at methanol injection.

Any where from 50-100 horse increase.

What more do I need to add to justify a Catback? I've got 455 horsepower and 455 pounds of torque

You are not doing any mods to the car to exceed the stock cats.

They will flow just fine. Exhaust will not push it beyond the stock cat design. Now, if you plan on cams, head work, a blower or turbo down the road, then spend the money on the high flow cats or just cut them off all together (not that I ever did such a thing :) ) And it will be one less thing to worry about when you mod the car.

So if I just want the sound get axle backs?

my advice on an exhaust is be patient and see if you can find a car club or a Camaro club to hear for yourself.

I briefly had a Mustang GT and was looking at an upgrade - after I heard enough of them I decided to save my money. Stock sounded good enough, I had plenty of power already and the drone potential wasn't worth it.

Live with your car for a while before you start this type of mod.

All this camaro talk has me feeling dirty.

Soon you will be sporting hats with this on it:
