Automobilia etc....

That's not accurate.

The Avalon starts at $32,650, the Merc E300 starts at $52,150. A price gap of nearly $20,000.

A Benz CLA250 is 32k, same as an Avalon. As mentioned, Benz goes from 30k to 200k, so you can't just pick out the one that costs 52k and run with it. Also, a loaded up Avalon is as nice as a base model Benz/Bimmer imo.

Once again, you are not comparing apples to apples. The CLA is the smallest car Mercedes makes, the Avalon is the largest sedan Toyota makes.

Let's look at the specs here:

2016 Toyota Avalon Features & Specs | Edmunds

Now let's look at a Mercedes of comparable size:

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Features & Specs | Edmunds

I argue that you will find most base model luxury cars to be woefully equipped:

A color besides plain black or white? Optional
Leather? Optional
Rear view camera? Optional
Heated seats? Optional

I'll show you some #'s when I get back home. Benz and BMW must be a bargain down here in SC compared to where you live lol.

My X3 has heated seats, heated steering wheel, all wheel drive, winter package, xline, reclining front seats (from under the knee, not the back), leather, nav, black headliner, this list goes on and on. All this and was not even considered loaded up.

My mom just bought a new Ford Escape. She regretted it after riding in our X3 and finding out they were the same price. New or used, doesn't really matter with a warranty. Used is always the way to go.

Is that a rebuttal?

All of that stuff was optional equipment. Like I mentioned earlier.

I'm not talking new. Only drunk folks and naive old ladies buy new. 2-3 years old is where the deals are.

Not nice to talk about your mother that way.

Once again, my argument was about new vs. new.

I also found you a 2014 Benz E-Class with 28,000 miles for 31k. 1 year apart and only $5,000 difference and the Benz has half the miles.

I'm going Benz in this match.

Next up we have a 2014 GLK350....$31,000.
Compared to the 2014 RAV4 for $25,000.

In this match, I'm going Benz.

And here's another challenger to the GLK...a 2014 Ford Escape for $25,000.

I'm going GLK.

Point being, "non luxury" prices are creeping up into luxury territory. Which is why you're seeing more and more BMW, Benz, and Audi on the road.

Fair point.

Seems like the moral of the story is:

If you plan to buy a new car, buy a good, reliable, Japanese car as they tend to hold their value much better.

For a great deal on a used car, buy a German car because they lose their value at an alarming rate.

Also make sure the German car has a warranty.

The price gap from new to new is significant, but the gap shrinks tremendously since the luxury car depreciates much faster.

And those German cars cost infinitely more to repair without the warranty

I would say skip the new cars all together. Buy used.

I like Japanese cars for reliability. Hell, my last two work vehicles have been Toyotas and you can't beat them. Honda needs to step it up with their line. They really need a 350Zish sports car like they had in the S2000. And does Mazda still have the RX8? I know they had a bad rap, but I loved the look and interior of the car. It was really slow, however.

Used, I'm going German all day. BUT ONLY if it's a CPO with a warranty to 100k. I've had BMW's past 100k and it's all downhill from there. My Toyota built Scion XB however is sitting at 136k right now and going strong as ever.

If there were a zombie apocalypse and I had to pick between my X3 or my XB to run through the end of times, I'm probably going XB. At least I could fix that one if it broke. If I'm going to a football game and I wanna tailgate in style, I'm going X3 haha.
