Any Final Fantasy nerds out there?

I never played, 9,12, or 13. Am I really missing anything or will I just be let down from awesomeness that is 7,8, and 10.

I love 13 for the character development, story, battle system, and obviously pretty graphics. Some don't like it because it is very linear, so it may not be your cup of tea. I like 12 too, however I'm not a huge fan mainly because I played XI some and felt like 12 was a watered down version. Don't care for IX, but its just not my cup of tea. Doesn't mean its bad, because there are lots who love it.

Really no FF game is bad, except for maybe the original NES version of FFII. That's pretty awful.

Blasphemy. FFII>anything after X. Pretty graphics should be the least of worries for a FF game(even though they seem to spend more time on the gfx than gameplay these days).

This thread made me go in search of my old FFVII PC version. After searching through a bunch of boxes I found it (along with Rome:Total War). Anyway, I went to go look for the patch and I found this thing called Bootleg for installing mods. It seems people have made quite a few mods for the game over the years(had no idea it was a mod-able game). It makes the game look way better (to an extent).

Here's some video.

Busted out the DS for some FFTA2 looking to burn half an hour on it. Over the past two days I've sunk about 5 hours into it. I forgot how addicting it is.

Oh man. FFII, while it had a good story for its time (in the days when video games really didn't even have stories) was horrendous, featuring some of the worst gameplay mechanics imaginable. For example, attacking an enemy that is no longer there because it was killed, thus wasting an entire turn. Or the so-called "leveling" system, where you swing your weapon for hours, hoping to get one level. Or hoping that an enemy would whup your ass, so there would be a chance that your HP would go up.

I don't particularly care for gamefaqs, but some of the review titles are pretty much spot on:

Yes, it is the black sheep of the series. And a very ugly one, unfortunately...

Oh, dear. This will get very ugly.

"Miss, miss, miss... Miss... 'Inefective?' Miss... Miss.. *3 hours later* Level-up!"

It tries. It fails. It goes home crying.

Not good by 2004 RPG standards, but in 1988 there really were no RPG standards.

This game is AWFUL!

The minuses outweigh the pluses as SquareSoft bombs the second game of the series

An Interesting, But Barely Playable, Experiment

I mean almost every FF has its share of detractors, but it goes on and on on the review page:

Final Fantasy II Reviews for NES - GameFAQs

Thankfully they fixed it in re-releases. But in its original form, it made "The Spirits Within" look like a good idea.

9 was great. Went a little more classic with the wizards wearing the cloak and straw hats and all that good stuff. Definitely worth the time.

12 was my least favorite so far. The "grid" system was pretty weak for leveling up and I wasn't a fan of what just kind if felt like a hack'n'slash battle system.

I'm getting near the end of 13 and I have to say, I had my doubts about the game going through most of it. When people say its linear they aren't joking. It's like "walk down a narrow path going towards a marker on your mini-map" linear. However, I finally am at chapter 11 where the game truly opens up and I must say, I have completely shifted on this game. The battle system to me is one of the best I've ever seen. Once you really get into it, it is the most intense, strategy-based system I have ever seen. It gives you a very very rewarding feeling when you play a battle to perfection. I've beat bosses I shouldn't have stood a chance in hell against just because I timed everything perfectly. My advice with 13: buy it. Stick it out until the game finally opens up into a free roaming world, and it is a terrific game. I will be buying 13-2 when I'm done with this one.

I agree. I thought the battle system in X-2 was the best, but they took the basic principle from that and refined it in 13. If you like 13's, you'll probably like 13-2's even better, because they refined it more.

For example, its kinda annoying in 13 when you have 3 commandos, and they each attack something different. In 13-2, you can customize your paradigms to make them all attack one thing. Vice versa goes for ravager. In 13, your ravager will all attack the same thing. In 13-2, you can have them all attack something different. Its glorious when you're facing a pack of weak enemies and they do area spells and wipe them out in 3 seconds.

That sounds amazing actually. One thing I can't stand is when I have Vanille (who is my best medic) healing the party, and one member dies and instead of reviving the fallen member, she keeps casting cure on myself and her. Even though we have enough health to get us by for a few attacks. I find myself yelling at the TV for her to cast raise sometimes when that happens lol

I can't stand how she sounds like she's having an orgasm everytime she's casting.

That and the massage scene in FFX-2 are the only times I've been embarrassed playing a video game.

I can't wait to play this, but Packard's still hasn't called me about my PS3 getting fixed! I did get the FFVII discs buffed for free, because I asked the guy if he'd do it free if I bought a PS2 slim, then returned the slim the next day :)

I like the sound of most of it, especially the variety of sidequests and open world. Not sure how much I like having a limited time to beat the game tho.

lol I get so confused by all the numbered games with numbered sequels. FF 13 3 just sounds retarded.

Which one are you talking about?

I think its the first form (the giant sword) that all but requires you to have a 3 Sentinel paradigm to survive one of the moves. In fact you it should be your default paradigm to start the fight with.

The last form you can't do anything to it until you stagger it. After that its easy.

It's the second form that uses the sword. I can beat the first form fairly easily (though it takes me a while) but then I can't even get close to beating the second. I hold my own wih him fine then he casts a spell that puts every possible negative status effect on me and nobody in my party can do anything. Then he just kills me off.

I forget what debuffs he puts on you, but at that one I think you pretty much need a MED, maybe even a paradigm of three to get healed up faster. Having some medicines wouldn't hurt either.

Well I have SEN MED MED for those situations but again it's whichever debuff doesn't let you act. Like anything under "ability" or "auto-command" is just blacked out.

He casts that then I just sit there and wait patiently as he kills me off

There's some on accessories, but its a waste. There's items that will remove what he's talking about, and they're relatively cheap too. Or you can use that renew move that costs you TP. Since its a special ability, I think it ignores any ailments.
