Any better than Dooley?

Dooley had his shot at UT,he didn't have the support of one Mr Hart for what ever reason, cut off at the nads

I don't know how long many of the posters on this site are but I suspect the average age to be about 25. I have a bit more time watching Tennessee football and I can tell you that even during Majors growing pains the team was almost always competitive.

I was in school when Majors came home and we sucked, sucked, sucked for his first 4-5 years!!!! Remember the 0-6 start? We were real competitive in that stretch!!!!!!! And by the way the SEC is a different deal now!

Majors

1977- 4-7
1978- 5-5-1
1979- 7-5 (third year)
1980 - 5-6
1981-8-4
1982- 6-5

two out of his first 6 we were decent, first 2 really bad! Lost to Candy in 1982.

We have 2 games left to decide if Jones is an improvement over Dooley, as far as coaching ability, I haven't seen much this year so far. He appears to be a better recruiter however.

We haven't had a coach who could outcoach anybody since Majors. Fulmer had better talent when he was winning, Kiffin had a great defense coach and fired the team up occasionally, and Dooley demotivated the team so bad we lost games we actually could have won. Jones isn't outcoaching anybody either. He relies on system players and getting people to play 130% for UT. But if the other team is just better then you have to have that intangible to get the team over those humps. Like Saban did against lsu, Spurrier did against mizzou, (hate to say it) how Franklin did against uga. That's why we aren't consistently competitive. Hate to say it but if it comes down to x and o in a close game we will lose everytime.

Saban was 6-6 his first year and lost to LA-Monroe late. I'm sure some bammers weren't happy with the lack of "on field" improvement after that game either.

It woulda been a great story if CBJ had gotten the guys to overachieve in these last 3 games. As it is I'll settle for some future talented recruiting classes that JUST ACHIEVE. Yeah...several four stars who stick around, keep their nose clean, buy into the coach's system, and actually play to their potential... all in a stabile environment.

<It needs to change in a hurry though.>

No.

Saban had a bcs titale and 2 sec titles already. If we hired that type of coach then we could feel comfortable in the first year results because we would know he has a proven system of turning things around plus a pipeline of recruits.

Tennessee is not a top 10 program right now and has not been for a while. No coach of Nick Saban's level was even available last year, much less interested in Tennessee.

Hate to tell you guys who've been following the team for 40+ years, but UT is not a powerhouse anymore. You can thank Mike Hamilton & Coach Fulmer for that. It's going to take a successful, yet unproven coach like Jones to bring this program back. He has to be given adequate time though.

As for the continual week-by-week improvement, only a blind man could not see that this was happening through South Carolina game with a junior QB at the helm. Worley then got hurt & we had to put a true freshman in there to face three consecutive top ten teams. This team would not have been competitive in those games with Saban himself as the head coach.

victory tonight may kill it, or at least put it on life support.

I will fire away. If you think we beat Jones' Cincy team with these players, then you are lost. We just lost two NFL WR's and and an NFL talent at QB. Comparing CBJ to Dooley is just ridiculous.

We need players, plain and simple. I feel sorry for people who don't understand this.

you forgot about the NFL tight end and the 3rd receiver ..maybe not an NFL talent but 4.4 speed.

OK, so the thread lives.

What are the excuses now?

Can anyone defend the "game plan" of playing scared?

Be honest with yourself, so far there is NO difference with the performance on the field. Hell, we could now be 4-8.
Maybe Dooley would have had a better season than this.

Dooley would have lost to SoCar.

We don't know. We would be running a different offense, maybe a better one. Defense would be the same or worse.

This is just ridiculous. If Jones doesn't show that he can coach at this level next year the hourglass may be turned. There has got to be a real diamond in the rough out there ala James Franklin. Like him or not the dude is a pretty darn good coach.

Dooley was blown out by Vandy and he had NFL talent on O

Coach Jones may or may not be the guy, we will not know till he gets his guys in here. I'll give my opinion this time next year.

Some of you should google articals written about Jones after his 1st year at Cicny. The look at the ones from his last year.

Cincy and UT....apples/oranges. This is big boy football and the competition is way stronger than whatever conference Cincy is in. In my opinion we must see something next year, some hint that we will be able to compete and give us 6 wins for gods sake. I really don't think that is asking too much.

Dooley...beat 3 teams with a winning record in his 3 year coaching career for us (Cincy, UT-Martin, NC State)

Franklin...beat 3 teams with winning records in his 3 year career at Vandy

CBJ...has beat 2 teams with a winning record (S.C & W Ky), in year 1.

If anything Franklin is closer to being like Dooley....I'll stick with Butch Jones

I find it funny that message board posters are convinced butch is not the guy but the former football players (6 I've talked to since last night) are sure he is.

I'm waiting on more info.
Next year.

One is VANDY's coach, the other the coach of an 800 win program with multiple NC and SECC's.

Franklin can coach.

So many posters on here argued against me for 2 years, saying Dooley was the man.

Now, same guys are arguing with me saying Butch is not.

Looks like I will be 2-0.
