A good handgun

If you just want to start "shooting" with a pistol I strongly recommend a good .22 caliber. The reason is you'll be able to shoot a LOT and that builds good habits and proficiency without costing you a lot of money. That last part is no small matter. Cabelas right now has 9mm Winchester 115gr FMJ "USA" white-box on sale for 14.99 per 50. That's about as cheap as it gets for something with any brand recognition. If you only paid that much (no taxes/shipping/etc) you're still looking at .30 cents per shot. That means you load up a G19 mag with one in the pipe and by the time you empty the weapon you've spent close to $5 right there. OTOH they've got a 525 count box of Remington .22 HVHP's for 20.99, or .04 cents a shot.

One of the best things I ever did was get a .22 conversion kit for one of my Glocks. Same sight picture/grip/trigger/etc that I could practice with before shooting a few of the "real thing". (I also handload though, so even the bigger calibers aren't quite as expensive)

Modern bullets have done much to increase the effectiveness of the 9mm but the .40 does more of the same and can now be had in platforms as small as most of the 9mm's. A 9mm beats the crap out of having to defend yourself with harsh language or a stick but unless I'm going for a real micro-pistol (and then you might be better served with a .380, which in actuality is just a 9mm "short") I prefer the .40.

Have not shot it yet but have drove my wife crazy with the laser.

I like mine but shooting a bunch of rounds will hurt the hand eventually because the frame is so thin. Great for conceal though.

My next purchase will be a S&W .38 revolver
Hard to beat a .22 for fun- easy and cheap to shoot- rat shot for raccoons, possums, and not my dogs

Frayser ain't no joke. My grandparents got out of there about 15 years ago and only went back to get my great grandmother out of there too.

We go through there a few times a year. I lock the doors when we get close and we don't stop for ANYTHING even red lights. I slow way down a keep rolling. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but she just doesn't know. I tell her if she's driving to not stop even if she hits somebody.

True story. A lady I work with went with her church group to Memphis. They stopped in Frayser to eat lunch. Place got robbed and they took everybody's purse/wallet/jewelry, etc. She warned the driver not to stop in Frayser but he didn't heed. The church group were all black folks BTW.

my choice right now is the S&W model 5906 9mm and RV's is the smaller Government issue Colt .380 (a collector's item now)

Wow. I have a 5904 w/ high capacity mags that I bought sometime around '92. It actually is my overall favorite.

Mine too. RV's .380 is no longer manufactured. I gun range owner tried to buy it from her once. uh I think we'll hang on to that one.

That .380's the "Mustang" right? Yeah...best hang onto that one.

I will say the Sig P238 is a pretty decent successor to the Mustang.

Indie. Whatever auto you get, run a couple boxes of fmj through it before any hollow points etc. This helps break in the feed ramp that might otherwise have problems with JHPs right out of the box. Some pistols don't have this issue but best to be safe.

Another good choice for a service style pistol is the CZ 75, not overly expensive and reliable as hell. Not small or light but a great weapon

i've been looking a lot at a taurus PT92.... i think a 9mm is the smallest i will get. a .22 would be nice to save money, but i looked at some today and they are tiny. a .380 is a little bit better, but the ammo is a lot more expensive than that of a regular 9mm, so i might as well get the 9mm. i really like the PT92, but i haven't gotten to shoot it yet.

Got one right here in my hand right now. It's a black beauty. PT 92 AF. I like it. It fits my hand pretty good. The grip could be just a tad fatter, but it's OK.

I know you know it, pard, but I still think you should shoot the .50 AE before you make your decision.

Not for sale. Sorry. They're like good books to me. Keep them forever. I'll be curious to see what you end up with. I think the 9mm is a good decision on caliber if you can afford to shoot it.

yeah, affording it is my only issue. its fairly expensive...

Wow, pard. I was indeed wonderin'. You sure know how to cut to the core, you always have.

i'd say sorry, but I don't like you.
