My suggestion for entry level to get you going would be to check out the Taurus line. I have some high end firearms but, also, have 3 of the lower priced ones from Taurus. Lifetime Warranty on those. You don't need a $600-$1000 handgun to get a good one and get started. But, as stated a very good one will begin in that range. I would look into 9mm's, also. Ammunition is much less expensive. Anything I need to stop or bring down, I can do it with one of my nine's.

One of the first guns I got was a Ruger Mark II automatic 22 pistol. I wanted something I could shoot a lot. It's cheep to shoot and a load of fun.

why a glock 19? like i guess i just don't really know what the difference is in some of these guns. glocks seem more expensive for the most part. does length of the barrel really matter? does it basically just come down to what i like and feel comfortable shooting?

The shorter the barrel the least likely you are to hit the target from farther distance.

With semi-auto you want to make sure the thing isn't going to jam on you. Do research and get good ammo.

thanks. any other advice on what certain things mean, or what to look out for is much appreciated!

I would also advise you to buy something that has the ammunition readily available in your area. 9mm are relatively cheap but in some areas hard to find.

My .357 sigs are hard as crap to find around east tn at times.

Also, as far as ammo, get personal protection/hollow points.

Get some good defensive ammo gold dot, corbon, remington etc..tons too choose from and then run a box or two through your gun to make sure it wil shoot it and do thst every few months then practice with 115g wwb from walmart its like 100rounds for $15 or 20.

Reason i say glock 19 is its proven, easy to shoot for most beginners and reliable. The new 4th gen has removable back straps to adjust the size of the grip.

Whats cool with glocks are that the mags are interchangeable within the caliber.

Im not brand myopic but glocks are hard to beat man for what they are.

Glocks are the cheapest that i wouod go, i wouodnt go with taurus or ruger thats just my opinion and other peoples ive heard. Although the ruger 380 lcp is a neat little back up weapon and the ruger sr9 is good but not light or small for concealable.
The glock 26 or 19 are both solid choices if you can hit your target. I dont push heavy in xd because in my opinion they have a high bore axis and they are top heavy. My fav is the sig p229.
Think of concealabilty, reliabilty, weight and price when considering your weapon system.

My opinion for you is if can shoot well with it is get a glock 19 night sights of your choice, a stlr weapon mounted flashlight, and ammo. Dont spend tons of money on changing springs and whatnot, the gun is perfect the way it comes, when you go changing stuff on it the chances of it not going bang goes up..

Two loudest sounds: A click when you expect a BANG and a BANG when you expect a click!

I'm not a fan of Glock mainly because of the design of what they want to call a safety. I'm only throwing this out there, Indi, so you will be aware that the "safety" on a Glock is unlike other semis. If you consider one, check into it yourself to see if you personally feel safe with it. Plaxico Burress might not have had the incident he had if he had carried a handgun with what I would call a real safety.
