2026 Transfer Portal Thread

Few thoughts here: I know his dad (not well) through mutual friends. His dad played at Rice. They are big on Vandy and the education. They’re all a little shocked that he moved up the board and is getting so much attention. He’s recently been getting late 1st round grades. I think they’re torn because they want him to get a degree from Vandy. I watched him play in HS. He was even skinnier and shorter then, but obviously his first step, release, recovery speed, shot are all incredible. At 5 11” in real life measurements, he’s a tough pick, but scouts really like him. I think he’s probably 75% go to the NBA and 25% stay at Vandy. I think his family’s influence is strong. I don’t see him transferring. This is all conjecture. I have no insight from our side.
Yeah, knowing the Vandy connections, hard to see him leaving. Plus Vandy is selectively paying like an SEC school, now. No reason to think we could just bully them financially anymore, especially for a kid with an emotional tie and support of his family.

I really struggle to see him sticking in the NBA. He's good, but if Kennedy Chandler can't stick long-term, I don't see how Tanner can. That's kinda weird to think. Go get paid if you can, I guess, but he's one whose uncertainty of sticking you would think makes a hefty NIL possibility a bigger factor in his decision to go or not.

I do know for a fact that he wanted to come to UT (we didn’t offer) and do know for a fact that transferring is definitely being considered

These are both accurate statements
The first one is definitely true. The second one can’t be proven or disproven. A third observation is we’re on the record with his agent that we’d pay a big number. The questions are: will be dump a possible first round grade, and/or leave what his family perceives as a world class degree. I agree with Chris that his type doesn’t do well long term in the league. For this reason, I also think he’s overrated in current draft position. We’ll see how it plays.

don’t want to get into specifics but judging by your bolded you’ve at least heard some of the things I have about him. I said I think he goes pro and that’s based on his current position, but I think if he returns to college it’s about 50/50 at best it’s at Vandy. There’s a very real chance they don’t return anyone outside of him, does that play a part in a decision for him relearning a whole team? If Vandy needs to go and add 7-8 guys in the portal can they afford to pay him the money necessary to keep him and field a squad around him good enough to compete? Lots of moving pieces and as I’ve said I think the most likely is that he’s going pro, but I think it’s also much more likely than not he’s not at Vanderbilt next year than he is, whether that’s NBA or another school.

Personally hope the kid goes pro.

I can just see this being one of those recruitments that goes to the last day and we miss on a ton of guys in the process waiting on a decision.

Nickel, Miles, Okereke, McGlockton, Washington are all seniors. Tanner, Bing, and Harris are the only players returning with 20ish games under their belt.

My opinion with zero knowledge or intel is that Tanner isn't at Vandy next season.

And that’s if neither of those 2 transfer, neither has played a bunch and neither is from the area…could see them look elsewhere.

I can’t see what you’ve bolded, but they’re aware we have a bag for him. I think our best shot at the dice table is him slipping. He wouldn’t be the first guy to drop significantly after he gets measured.

Is there any comparable sized players currently in the NBA? Seems like a high risk low reward draft pick unless he can put on significant muscle without losing his quickness.

Not a ton. The league doesn’t have a lot of small guards anymore and he’s smaller than most of the “small” ones.

Edit: according to ai, there’s 1 5’8” guy on a two way and everyone else is over 6’. So he would be the second shortest guy in the league and maybe the shortest by the time next season rolls around. Not how I would spend my draft pick if I were a gm but you never know.

Trae Young is a little taller and heavier but Tanner is even quicker. NBA doesn’t play defense and court is spread so he would have a lot of room.

Depends on if Tanner is actually his listed 6' or if he's closer to 5'10"

If he's actually 6' probably can get himself drafted, highly doubt it'd be first round though...

If he's 5'10" though, no one is drafting him and they'd likely take chance on snagging him as a free agent.

I used Kennedy Chandler as a size comp. He's had trouble sticking around and had a much better pedigree. KC was a 2nd rd pick. Both 6-0 and 170 lbs.

Wanna really get your hopes up? Somehow staff brings in Tanner and convinces Ament to return for one more season to get back to 100% and add more muscle.
Would be unreal - but I do think no chance Nate comes back.

This would be sick, though:

Tanner
Boswell
Rice/Freeman
Phillips
Estrella
-
Burg/Henderson
Lundblade/Freeman
Evans
Brown
-
Scott
Green
Clark
Washington Jr./Peck
-
Walk-on (Paull)
Walk-on (Duncan)

Almost certainly won't shake out like that but three high level pieces with minimal departures would be awesome.
