2017 Loaded! Starters by position.....

So, they were good enough to be the line for a potential 10-2, 11-1 team, but they aren't good enough for next year? Was it poor coaching or the players?

If you say both, then no one should've expected anything more than 7-5, 8-4 this year.

If you say coaching, then you acknowledge the players are good enough for that sort of potential in this league moving forward..

I was one of a few who said this team was not as good as everyone was predicting before the season began. You don't win in the SEC without dominant line play. Even more, Dobbs hid a lot of the deficiencies with his elusiveness.

As I stated earlier, you can't win championships with 3* talent, especially when you do not have a track record of developing talent.

I will add, the scheme makes it difficult on the OL. Not in a 3 point stance and rarely firing off the ball makes it difficult to impose your will on a defense.

I'm almost 100% sure the move you have Tyler Byrd going to CB is not going to happen. He's a playmaker & that speed can't be replaced.

He showed flashes of it this season. We're not loaded at WR so Byrd will stay right there & provide us with some electric stuff playing mostly slot but also line up outside some too.

If Sutton would have left for NFL, Byrd would not have been on offense.

Only reason he wasn't moved to CB after Sutton and other CB injuries was due to him not practicing there all season.

I don't agree that Jennings will be moved (full-time to S) but I do think Byrd to CB as his primary position is a given this offseason. There was talk of it during the season by the coaches.

On Malone, I do not know what he is thinking obviously, but I do think he will way his options on leaving. He broke out big time after Preston was benched and left.

Your opinion. I don't think it will happen with Byrd going to CB but we all have different opinions. When I hear CBJ or another staff member come out & say it then I will believe it. I don't see how we could let such a playmaker go to the other side of the ball.

That's where these coaching situations/decisions come into play about CBJ. Does he really know where to play the right guys at the right positions to allow them to flourish? I'm beginning to not think so but he has time to prove me wrong maybe.

if Perry comes back from academic probation he is a promising slot. Plus, no reason you couldn't design a couple of plays for Byrd. He is money at corner, and it's a huge deficiency. Hopeful for Osborne at corner and Warrior at safety.

There's no doubt Byrd can play either WR or CB but I think his skillset is better suited for playing WR. He can probably dominate at CB like Cam Sutton did most of the time but why change him back over now?

His speed can give us a gamebreaker in which we don't have at WR. We have some coming in with speed but not as fast as Byrd.

I am sure they will be Life Champs..... As for the east? Forget it..... Writing is on the wall..... Unless JG is Lamar Jackson we will lose a couple we should win finish 8-4 or 7-5....

Problem is JG won't start.
It's been said on here over and over Jones starts the upperclassmen not the best player.
QD will be your starter and Tennessee will have to fight for 7-5 or 6-6.

Exaclty, and he was rated #2 behind JG as dual threat QB

JG worries me as he just averaged 2.5 yards per carry in HS. Dormady was better than that @ 4.5. What gives is this VN building someone up like Kongbo and Kahil. I hope he does great and is Dobbs 2 on running but those numbers look frail.

Yes he is. Kid will be a star!

Not so fast ...the best passer will win the start ...even if they are a statue or not mobile.

Butch is committed to the west coast passing game for better or worse. It is the whole logic he used to start Worley over Dobbs

This is the thing that no seems to get. The running QB stuff ...this was only done because Dobbs couldn't seem to master the passing concepts. Notice we would get behind by 2 or 3 scores and then we would start running Dobbs.

This offense is not about a running QB . This offense is a 'pass to run spread'. It is a spread that uses last west coast philosophy. It needs 60% accuracy and a fast release. This is what Jones wants , and if he finds that guy ...there would never be a reason for the QB to run .

I dont necessarily like the system ...but it is the system we are talking about. Forget running QB ...the best passer will get the start

2017 Starters

QB - Jarrett Guarantano
RB - John Kelly (Alvin Kamara if no draft)
WR - Josh Malone
WR - Marquez Callaway
WR - Josh Smith
TE - Ethan Wolf
LT - Brett Kendrick*
LG - Venzell Boulware* or Jashon Robertson*
C - Coleman Thomas
RG - Jack Jones*
RT - Chance Hall*
* Hard to tell who will start where because they have all been moved around and have tons of experience at multiple positions (group played well considering)

DE - Kyle Phillips moves back outside
DT - Shy Tuttle
DT - Kahlil McKenzie
DE - Alexis Johnson or Darrell Taylor
** There will be great depth along the DL provided no injuries
OLB - Todd Kelly Jr (Weak Side)
MLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr
OLB - Quart'e Sapp or Ja'Quain Blakely (Strong Side)
LCB - Baylen Buchanan
SS - Nigel Warrior
FS - Jauan Jennings
RCB - Tyler Byrd

N-B - Rashaan Gaulden (2 LB sets)

P - Trevor Daniel
PK - Aaron Medley

I hope this happens OP. I think this defense is what has to happen for us to be better there. TKJr is a pretty solid tackler but does not have the speed to be a safety. Bulk him up into an OLB. Jennings at safety would be perfect. there is a reason he is on kickoff coverage. I think Byrd was asked to play WR but really wanted to play DB. Didn't he play DB in the All American game before coming here?

I seriously wish more people would grasp these simple concepts. Excellent post. Thank you.

No offense but Byrd and Jennings are pretty sure handed WRs. If Malone leaves, who would be out top WR? George? Callaway? Johnson? Maybe Byrd gets moved but no way do you even think about moving Jennings to safety. He will be a huge offensive weapon next year.

none taken. where do we hurt more? offense or defense? I just think we need them on D. cornerback and safety play this year was pretty bad.

this right here. simplicity at its finest. run opens the pass. pass opens the run.

I could possibly see Byrd at CB, like I said. But if Malone goes to the NFL, we may be a little thin at the WR position for big play guys.

I wouldnt mind seeing JJ play some safety. Just not full time.

Fewer returning starters than this year
Freshman QB
Less depth
Same coach

*sigh*

minus Dobbs, Kamara, Barnett, Vareen, Sutton, Weisman, the offense will suffer and well, we know what the defense brings to the table.....uh....oh, I can easily see a losing season for Butch Jones last year:cray:

You may be right ...but the team may be better. I am not sunshine pumping and I am in the wait and see school of thought on Jones.

What if the QB can prove to be 60% accurate and release the ball on time? It is well documented that Dobbs was consistently inconsistent. The QB releasing the ball in 2.4 seconds means no pressure. The offense had a philosophy shift after SC , where they kept more blockers and went to more of a power based running system . What if the keep this philosophy ? Could be a very strong season for Kelly. If the offense is maintaining possession , then the defense is not on the field 930 snaps next season when means they will not have the same injury bug . They will be healthy and deeper at key position. Where as you cant replace Barnett as a pass rusher , he was often chasing a record and neglecting the run . What if they get more rounded play from his replacement ?

I am not saying all of these things will happen ...but there is a path to the 270 electoral votes that are required
