After seeing what happened to JRM and Sutton when they came back this year I wouldn't be so sure. Also, it's not a great draft for WRs which could help me.
I think and hope Malone stays and that he should....GOD knows team 121 badly needs him next year. But there's uncertainty at QB next year and another year of Azzani sure as hell does him no good. He's very talented, has had an outstanding season, and if he gets a decent draft grade back, 3rd round or so, I could see him declaring.
Tyler Byrd and Juan Jennings both at DBs and Todd Kelly at OLB ? Also Alexis Johnson as DE
Man, you sound like Butch Jones ..
Dobbs made the oline look a lot better than it is.
We are all in for a rude awakening if QD isn't mobile enough.
Loosing the best player on the team imo at RB doesent make them better.
Malone probably leaves. If Jennings and Byrd move over to Defense there's no go to guy for the inexperienced QB.
Wolf is inconsistent and there's nothing behind him with Croom out.
A ton of guys could leave early on the Oline.
Loosing Barnett and Vareen will hurt. The rest are unproven and injury prone.
DKJ returning is a great thing outside of that I haven't seen anything that says starter. A bunch of filler guys.
Sutton, Martin on his own not for draft reasons, and TK I like the potential in Abernathy and Osborne.
Not anything close to loaded and nowhere near the potential of this season next year.
I can appreciate what you're saying and why you're concerned. I hope you will be very pleasantly surprised by the quality of players and how good they really are and I believe you will be.
How many of those guys do you think are 3*?None of the other moves matter unless the line play on both sides of the ball improves greatly. Next year looks to be another mediocre year because:
--DEFENSE: No depth at DT, no speed rusher at DE, lack of depth and speed at LB, lack of speed in defensive backfield (especially safety).
--OFFENSE: Offensive line (especially OT) still weakest link on team, new QB, underperforming WR, Kelly shows promise but has trouble holding onto the ball, no proven backup at RB.
Vols can be good but not great with that resume'. You can't win championships with 3* recruits.
2017 Starters
QB - Jarrett Guarantano

DE - Kyle Phillips moves back outside

OLB - Todd Kelly Jr (Weak Side)
MLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr
OLB - Quart'e Sapp or Ja'Quain Blakely (Strong Side)
LCB - Baylen Buchanan
SS - Nigel Warrior
FS - Jauan Jennings
RCB - Tyler Byrd
N-B - Rashaan Gaulden (2 LB sets)

Projected starting 11 on both sides is pretty good, but the depth is pretty bad. Worse than this year. So sprinkle in the usual amount of injuries, a generous portion of underwhelming game management by Butch and a touch of lack of player progression and you have a recipe for another crap sandwich.

There's 10 out of 13 offensive linemen who were 3*. You can't win with that kind of talent when you have no track record of developing players.
Thanks for proving my point for me.
Spot on for numbers 1 through 4. I'm not as optimistic about the secondary next year. We only lose 1 starter and our secondary has not looked good this year. Hopefully they will improve and become a strength because we do have a lot of experience returning.2016 was the perfect storm talent wise IMO. More than enough has been said about failing this year.
Here's are the encouraging factors leading into 2017 IMO.
#1 Our injuries and attrition have forced large numbers of younger players into live reps and many of them. OL, WR, DL, LB, DB, PR, KR. This bodes well for our depth and talent being improved over what was expected in 17'. Although, we had only 1 game all season for playing "scrubs". That was detrimental a bit, but still a big +.
#2 Our offense will be different next year. With QD or JG (or SJ), we will be more pass oriented and less of a scramble / 3 headed monster running game.
#3 Our staff is going to be in a "make or break" season. One Jones has never experienced so far in his career. My hope is that he "trims the fat" and focuses all energy on better football. Shoop & D will be more comfy in their roles. Plus, this season has to be torture for him. I don't expect a sloppy D next year early. They'll be locked in scheme wise IMO. Whether Debord stays or not IDK, so that's an unknown.
#4 I like our talent. I love the adversity that this offseason off "missed expectations" will bring. Hoping that we can squeak out a difficult and lackluster bowl win in order to drive home this point all spring and summer.
Early 17' roster look ...
S - Kelly, Abernathy, Warrior, Berry make a good safety group. Griffin's not as good iirc, but he's played too. Enough talent there to not need to risk JJ swap and a learning curve IMO. We'll have depth nonetheless if he gets a look.
RB - looks good with the new class and CFA stepping up.
QB - in really good shape with and quality experienced backup vs top RSFr vs RSSoph for the position.
OL - should be much better via experience(although I thought that this year too). DR is starting to get a little mojo. With a year of S/C and his experience, I would not be surprised to see him really take off and play well. Get our RT and others healthy and we could be good here. We'll need better protection w/o Dobbs wheels fo sho.
TE - will be down w/o Croom (passing wise) but still solid with excellent Wolf + a newcomer.
DE - will be a bit of a dropoff due to our 2 big DE losses. But still with very talented and players with more experience than expected.
DT - if healed, will be improved over this year due to experience and the weight room. Wouldnt hurt to add another JUCO if Gaddy's are not replaced.
LB - should feature Bituli, Kirk, and Sapp as a athletic playmakers, but still a weakspot with Berry, Jumper, McD, Bryant still below avg SEC players now. The good news is that all those 4 have gotten many reps this year. If 1 or 2 shows improvement, we may surprise @ the position. Nobody here = JRM, but if we get 3 solid LBs to play power run teams, then we'll be better than this year.
WR - Jennings stays at WR to make a really talented group there. Maybe best on the team. JJ, Malone, Byrd, Smith, BJ, #19 is maybe our best position on the team.
CB/N - Gaulden is seasoned. Martin (if his head stays on) and Moseley will make a decent group of starters. If Buch & Osbourne can make So jumps then that would be great. Unsure about any other depth there unless Byrd came over.
K - Should be +
P - Already a freaking beast
KR - Loaded w Berry or Byrd
PR - Callaway hopefully seizes it
... I'm actually pretty jacked about next years roster. Hope we can get a bowl win and a top 10 class. That would put my mind at ease that we at least have a shot.
