2016-2017 Vols

Barnes said on today's conference call that Alexander had the best practice of his career this past week, said he was hitting a number of baby hooks they've been working with him on for over a year. Also said Schofield is a different player since his surgery, said he now gets a full nights sleep which has really helped his conditioning, before he was lucky to get 3-4 hours a night.

What was wrong with Schofield? Did he have sleep apnea or something causing him sleep problems?

Pain from whatever resulted in surgery I'd imagine.

Yea I believe they said he had sleep apnea because of something going on with his tonsils.

Thanks for the clarification. I have to go July 20th myself for a sleep study to see if I have sleep apnea to go along with all of my other health issues.

I also may have to have surgery on my septum(nose bone) because it's crooked & might be causing me breathing problems too.

Glad to see Schofield back to normal now. Insomnia is a really rough thing to live with. Glad to see that's better for him now.

Sleep apnea is no joke for sure. I was diagnosed in 96 and had surgery for it (along with taking my tonsils out and fixing my septum) back then. Finally started using a CPAP in 07 when attending UT. Made a huge difference. Without it it's like you're in a daze sleep walking through everything. Not to mention the long term cardiac issues it can cause.

I hope the sleep study helps pinpoint the source of your problems. I know the septum surgery really helped my breathing. Best of luck to you.

I would imagine that having a huge impact. Good sleep helps in so many aspects of health. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in even better shape than he was all year this year.

Thought this was a better thread for the current topic...

My hope for this year is 15+ wins, as Ziti said some signs from the current players/team for hope going forward, and a 2017 class we can get excited about.

Will 4 years of classes like the '16 class result in the type of program we are looking for, most likely not. However, the '17 targets would suggest that the staff is looking to improve the talent level, and the early offers to the '18 class would make it appear Barnes is looking to add even more talent to what's also expected to be a relatively small class.

To me it has appeared Barnes, as he has said himself, is using the '16 class as a foundation class. 6 guys who likely are 4-5 year players, knowing you'll likely lose 1-2 along the way to transfer, and hoping by 2020 you've got 4 seniors graduating who helped pave the way for the rebuild.

In order for that philosophy to work though you've got to show some signs of life which IMO would be an increase in wins. You've also got to show some signs of help on its way which would be the '17 & '18 classes, adding some top 100 guys. And then you've gotta hope to see some signs from some younger guys, maybe Schofield having a breakout year, Turner showing promise, and Bone looking the part for fans to get excited about the future.

As I've said many times, I am not saying it's the right or wrong way, IMO nobody can make that call as of today. I don't think you can fairly even try to answer that until the 2017 season is over and signing class is finalized, and that would be the earliest IMO.

Very relative & really nice post Orange!

The way that the rotation is currently posted to Wikipedia, Tennessee could have two fairly equal entire 1st and 2nd teams. If nothing else, there should at least be some serious competition on the practice floor. With the possible exception of Turner, this could be the first team in a long, long time that does not have any guaranteed starter spots. Lately there have been what seems like 3 or 4 players each year that were going to start no matter what unless they were injured.

F/C Kyle Alexander Lew Evans John Fulkerson

F Robert Hubbs Admiral Schofield Grant Williams

G/F Shembari Phillips Jordan Bowden Jalen Johnson

G Detrick Mostella Kwe Parker Lucas Campbell (W)

PG Lamonte' Turner Jordan Bone Brad Woodson (W)

Despite using wikipedia as your source, I'll bite.

All this makes me think about is how much I hope the article on Hubbs being aware this is his time and all the off season effort he's putting in is true. Cause if it is that competition at practice will help him and team expectations.

The starting lineup is about the last thing that I'd trust on Wikipedia. It is an interesting configuration though. Really there are a lot of possible combinations. For a more physical lineup Evans could be flipped with Alexander and Schofield swapped for Phillips or Mostella. For a taller lineup put in Evans instead of Phillips and keep Alexander in the lineup.

If the Wiki 5 aren't scoring, insert Bowden or Kwe for Hubbs, Phillips, and/or Mostella... whichever is putting up bricks. Or put in Bone at the point and slide Turner over to a wing.

I think that it will be interesting basketball. I hope that TN will get enough wins to make it fun.

For once I'm not really looking forward to basketball season

I think we're going to be ok. I'm not saying we're going to make the NCAA tourney because we're not. I do think an NIT bid is very possible with this team. The keys are Hubbs, Mostella, & Turner. Yes, Turner.

He has the talent & ability to take this team to another level. One other player we need to perform up to his ability is Schofield. The rest of the players just need to fill in & play their roles.

Shembari Phillips also needs to show his talent like he did this past season with flashes of brilliance. We have these guys perform & play the way they're capable then this UT team will surprise a lot of folks & possibly get to .500 or slightly above to get an NIT bid.

That would be a huge accomplishment for Coach Barnes & this team that's not expected to do much at all. I can't predict our full record because I don't believe the full basketball schedule is out yet. I do think we can go somewhere around 16-15 or so though & receive that much needed NIT bid. GO VOLS!

If Hubbs and Mostella elevate their play comparable to what Richardson and Punter did, then TN will surprise a lot of folks. It could happen... Hubbs has been dogged with injuries since he's been in Knoxville and Mostella has been playing behind other guys that he couldn't take a lot of minutes from. It's those guy's team now. I hope that they sty healthy and positive.

Were you looking forward to it the last couple?

I'm not saying I won't watch. I knew last year was gonna be bad. Clownzo's last season I was still looking forward to. I was semi-excited for the Tyndall terror.

I wasn't expecting a miracle overnight from Barnes, but to this point the recruiting has left something to be desired.

I hope Turner turns out to be as good as expected.

Last year I was hearing that had Turner become eligible in January, he would have immediately become the best player on the team. Too bad we never got to see Punter/Turner. F'ing NCAA.

Me too. Will definitely be interesting, one way or the other. Likely the other, but they just show potential and crazy effort I'd be ecstatic.
