I would gladly shake CPFs hand and feel honored to speak to the man! I cant say that about any other coach we have had in my lifetime.
The man bled orange and still does even after being fired and that deserves some respect IMO.

As does Johnny Majors, who BTW, gave Fulmer his big break by promoting him to OC. Had that not happened, Fulmer likely would have bolted for the NFL and an offensive line position

It made sense to let Phil go in 2008 but does anyone have a doubt that we would be a lot better today if we had just ridden it out?

The program was trending downward when Phil was let go, so I am not sure that it would have gotten better if Phil was coach. It may not have been this bad though.

He ruled in recruiting his 1st 8 years then other schools hired coaches who could oppose. Fulmer did the opposite and paid the price. He should have hired some coaches who could recruit the fertile areas as well as come in with a better offensive scheme and he would still be coach. He finally tried in the end but too late.

Fulmer had lost it in recruiting. He was kind of the old man of the SEC at the time. He was losing to Vandie, etc.

The time had past Fulmer by. Let's not have convenient amnesia about his last few years. It was awful and you can almost argue that Fulmer started this mess.

But I will blame Hamilton no doubt. The way he did Fulmer was ****ty. I do think UT needed change. Fulmer had made some awful, awful staff decisions.

Hamilton is to blame for the whole Kiffin and Dooley debacle though....

he had lost it in recruiting so bad that we were top 10 in recruiting when he was let go. the game had passed him by so far that taj boyd and brice petty were both committed.
he was so complacent that we went to atlanta on average every 3 years.
we are so much better off now. this is fun. nothing like going 2 and a half games without scoring at home. good times.

It's an example of why you don't give petulant children sharp tools unless you've cornered the market on nose prostheses. Instant gratification and "what have you done for me lately" frequently come with bad outcomes. The sad part is that so many people apparently missed the object lesson - especially the replacement part. Sometimes Plan A looks pretty good when you start staring into the abyss that is Plan B.

I think it's closer to 300,000 posts, and over 10,000,000 views! I'm not sure why you hate on Gruden? No matter what your opinion. He would be thought of as a grand slam hire. By the entire football world. Do you make money evaluating coaches? I guess you're just smarter than 99.9% of the football community.

Gruden in nothing that he does comes close to mediocre. Butch on the other hand has his picture next to it in the dictionary. Gruden would play to win every game, while Butch plays literally not to lose on every single play....

Gruden would get at least a visit from nearly every high school athlete that he wanted to and I think would do very well with in home visits with kids today.

I don't know if he would get the wins but you do know the definition of insanity right???? continuing to do the same ole shizzz and expect different results. This is year 5 for Butch and he is about to have the same record that he had in year one, with all 4 and 5* guys on the field.....Butch Jones is completely inept in all phases in his coaching abilities.

He definitely deserved to have been treated better than he was. Hamilton started the **** show that is now UT athletics.... damn him!

Couldn't agree with you more!!
Then Hart did just about nothing to be remembered for!!

So far, Currie has returned the Lady Vol's to all women's teams👍.
He also hired one of my former high school classmates as men's head tennis coach!!
Got $340 approval on a much needed renovation on the house that Neyland built.
Ano now he has to fix the cash cow, for the betterment of the entire university, not just football.

Well said. I second that notion!!

2001 lsu but that's ok... have forgiven

That's when it all started.
Like driving in a car with a tire that starts losing lug nuts.
Wheels started coming off after that game. Then the hobnail boot from Georgia.

Examples you are using are for players that left for NFL in 1990 - 1993. Just FYI - Fulmer coached thru 2008. Lots of water under the bridge in between.

In Fulmer's final years, off the field arrests, cover up of a murder, drug suspensions, practice fights between players and coaches were increasingly common. Furthermore, well documented that many of the high school coaches throughout TN said that the beginning of the end of their problems with Dooley, dated to Fulmer becoming distant and not nearly as attentive as to how he'd been earlier in his career.

As I said, none of it was as bad as what happened with Majors - but it was trending the wrong way.

I also hold nothing personal against Fulmer. He's a Tennessee hero. But every dog has his day - and his was over.

My response was concerning MAJORS. You made a wrong statement that HIS recruiting was slipping towards the end...that’s bolsch! Those names I listed were his recruits. Appreciate you attempting to educate me but you’re not off to a good start with that slip-up. :)

You stated that Majors' last few years were like Fulmer's last few years. Those guys are Majors' recruits , who did very well his last few years as head coach.

Didn’t see your post before I replied. Damn job! :hi:

Fulmer lost to Vandy one time in 17 years. Jones has already lost to Vandy twice.

Maybe Gruden did play to win every game. Fact is he barely cleared .500 as an NFL coach. Mediocre.

Hamilton's biggest screw up was having Kiffin at the top of his list. Imagine where we'd be if he had brought in Patterson. .

Patterson was never coming but after Kiffin left he could have gotten Cutcliff if he had not insisted on retaining the remnants of Kiffin's staff.

Cucliffe with Simms and/or Bray would have been deadly.
