So why did Butch offer him a scholarship and take his commitment so early? Did Butch think he would have an issue filling the class with kids who were not a dime a dozen?
Why did we offer Dews, then back out of it months later? I just don't see LS being a position that warrants a scholarship....not when we are still trying to find impact players...many of whom are waiting until right before NSD to announce.

For example, if our class is full up, in late Jan...and Josh Sweat picks the Vols...are you going to take his signature or an undersized long-snapper? Elder can train a backup C to do that. No need to burn a scholarship on that position.

IMO, I think it helps, at this stage to give the appearance that the door of opportunity is closing, so that some of the more elite prospects choose earlier, rather than later. It's kind of like those BS pitches on those infommercials...."The first 100 callers gets this amazing offer, so call NOW!"

I am no insider...lol I am his first cousin the one who went on (UT tours with him) cousin. I will say we are in great shape with Kyle. I come on this site a lot and I read the message boards and I will have to say he does too. No worries here far as a commit. I just hope we have room since it seems we are filling the class up pretty fast.

This is great news. Gotta say I was getting an little ansy because of his positive comments about LSU. Will be a happy little vol fan when this big, fast, athletic, high character kid commits.

I just never understand the logic behind offering a kid a scholarship, taking his commitment, then taking it away unless he has done something negative to warrant it. 247 composite has 5 2015 LS's ranked. 4 of the 5 show as already committed "on scholarship" to TN, OSU, LSU, and Purdue. Obviously TN and CBJ is not the only big time school who sees the value in quality specialists.
Maybe you can argue that with Johnny Majors, Phillip Fulmer and the last 2 coaches here at UT. I've been following UT recruiting probably longer than you've been alive, and I've never seen us waste a scholarship on a Longsnapper.

A possible GS was attached to Dews the second he committed. Most all the sites reported that. Months after Lovingood committed and no one outside some fans looking at *'s are calling him a GS or he walk's candidate. As I mentioned. 4 of the top 5 LSs are committed ON SCHOLARSHIP for the 2015 class. TN is not the only school showing a commitment to specialists. If CBJ signs 25 this year, he has flipped 78 of the 85 spots on UTs scholarship roster. IMO he has enough room to take Riley this year on ship. He won't risk losing his #1 choice at LS AGAIN like he did Horky last year.

If CBJ made the decision to not use a scholarship on a LS and found a local kid to walk-on and do it, I'd be 100% fine with it.

Take back an offer and a commitment made to a TN kid who was told his offer was on scholarship months ago? No thanks. A coach attempting to maintain at least a shred of integrity is not a bad thing IMO.

It would be the first time in Modern history. Ain't buying it. As the coaches say, they are ALWAYS evaluating. They had Mouton committed at LB for MONTHS, chief....and he was a 4* recruit. Late in the game, they told him to look around. It happens. If we have some big name players still interested late in Jan., Lovingwood get's bumped....period.

They can try to find a good walkon prospect between now and then.

So why take the commitment at all? Why waste the recruits/his families time? Do you think Riley and his family are looking at other options today and planning visits to other schools? Something tells me they are not.

*'s should not mean a thing IF our coaches have evaluated the recruit and took their commitment. JMO

This is what I tell rivals fans who do not think we will ever come back. I tell them that we almost have all traces of Dooley out of our system. I also say I hope Kiffin burns Bama's program to the ground.

I think you're spot on Leb. While we're not on the mountaintop yet with regards to the ultimately talented and deep roster we all want to see, I think Butch has sent a couple signals with his 2015 class that he thinks we're getting close.....first signal was Lovingood, second was Joc Bruce. To me, being able to commit schollies to a LS and a "less than supremely talented" local kid dying to be a Vol shows that he thinks he has a little wiggle room to gamble with those 2 spots. I think Lovingood will be a scholarship player in the 2015 class.

I agree.Good friend of mine Mark Holland snapped during the early 90s was not on scholarship till he was like a junior. You also had a lot more scholar ships available then . Historically speaking TN has not offered hs.specialist full rides. But times are changing and if you want a good one a full ride may be the only way to get one.

You win in this league with a great OL and a DL that can be rotated

I agree. Partly why CBJ will have probably signed 22 OL/DL guys in the 2014 & 2015 classes combined.

Yes, that would be the total even IF he honored the scholarships to Lovingood, Bruce, Woods, and Townsend(kids some fans are saying cut loose).
