'15 NM QB Zach Gentry

If some of the quotes from this ala writer don't make you throw up then nothing will. It's funny how delusional they're becoming, and yes, they're following butch's lead to see who to offer.

Alabama is the highest-profile school to date to recruit Gentry. “It was a normal day. Wake up, have my breakfast, go to school, and all of a sudden I have an offer from Alabama,” Gentry said. “Makes your head spin a little bit.” Saban, college football’s most recognizable and successful coach, offered Gentry over a 20-minute phone conversation.

I didn't read whether Nicky gave him the dates and times for the tryout camp/invitational.

Maybe so, but it's math. They can't take Stidham AND Gentry AND Lock AND Rosen or whoever else they offered. I think Saban has given Kiffin the green light to offer kids that can run a little over the 4.94 McCarron types, but Bama is also pretty deep at QB at the moment. We'll have three, possibly only two, QBs on scholarship at the end of this season. That's gotta be more appealing than Alabama's depth chart, especially if the Vols pull off a couple upsets this year.

I kind of like that we're going up against Lane Kiffin now. Even before he bolted Knoxville, I had difficulty rooting for him. He struck me as a used car salesman, and I worried about the type of player that would commit to him. His entire schtick seemed gimmicky --- "come to UT because we have fun and there are chicks here!" I understand that you have to recruit top players to win in college football, and high school seniors aren't the most mature group, but still strikes me that you get the wrong type of kids that way.

I much prefer the Butch Jones recruitment style. Kids seem to be committing here now because they care about their future, their education, building solid relationships, finding strong role models, and UT's tradition and legacy. It doesn't automatically guarantee success, but it's a formula that, IMO, likely leads to greater stability and a team with better leadership.

According to 247, Kiffin is the lead recruiter for Gentry. That seems to set up a great contrast for us. I'll give Kiffin credit for being good at developing QBs, but if you're serious about becoming a better, stronger person, I think you pick Butch Jones over Lane Kiffin in a heartbeat. I'm hoping recruits see that, as well.

Solid post. :good!:

Depends on his future plans. Bama will win games but their former QBs are carrying clip boards or playing in Canada.

he did a great job with crompton. but, since then whats he done?

gentry could come here and be a superstar or go to bammer and have to wait. although the kid is talented enough to play wherever.

Crompton and his parents actually gave a lot of credit to an assistant coach (I can't remember his name) for his improved performance, not Lane Kiffin. Kiffin's ability to work with quarterbacks is exaggerated.

I talked to a guy when Kiffin was barely being considered for the Vols job. He claimed to be his college roommate. Said Kiffen just had good fortune fall in his lap without ever doing anything to earn it. He told me that we better hope and pray we did not get him as coach. Said that everything he had gotten up to that point was through his dad's name and that he was the biggest lying POS he had known in his life. Said if Tenn. hired him they would regret it. At the time it did not really look like he was the main candidate for the job so I kind of just dismissed what he said. We got him I thought well maybe the guy was right. It intrigues me that much of what the guy said appears to be true.

Been watching some tape of Zach and I keep seeing Zach Mettenberger. Both have size and both look to have a rifle and be able to push the ball down the field.

Granted, I believe Gentry has more athleticism and is more mobile than Mettenberger.

That's what I thought too

David Reaves?

I don't think too many people expected 3 star mediocre QBs like Parker-Wilson and McElroy to even make it to the NFL.

Bama lure gets them drafted but it's obvious that they aren't guys to brag about given their... Productivity(?)

Oh yeah I agree. For recruiting purposes, Bama can still use the fact that they were mediocre QBs that didn't put up ridiculous numbers but were drafted. They were definitely a product of the system

Good post...well said

Just have to show the kid how many QB's Alabama has ran off over the last 7-8 years.

How many QBs have they ran off? I know a few kids transferred because of lack of PT. Star Jackson and Phillip Sims were backups at the schools they transferred to for the most part. Jackson was 3rd string at Georgia State. Phillip Ely is a wait and see. They didn't want Del Rio to leave.
