Any better than Dooley?

Man, a bowl game is going to be a struggle again. It's hard to find six games on that schedule to feel confident about.

Which why THIS year was way more important than many want to admit. The future is now. Having a successful season this year would give hope for 2014 and the beginning of a real turn around. Vandy and KY were must wins for the turn around.

If you grade him on next year you're gonna have to conclude he ain't got it. Next year will be similar to this year. You can't expect the incoming class to make that big of a difference. I personally have little confidence that he can win here but his classes will have to be a little more experience before we'll know for sure.

Final grade...no. But you sure don't have to wait 3-4 years to start drawing some conclusions.

As bad as Dooley was, a competent coaching staff should be able to do more even with the lack of talent Dooley brought in. Even Dooley could win 4-5 games with this team which is all Butch is going to do.

Butch may be a better recruiter but it takes both talent and coaching to be a contender and this coaching staff looks horrible.

Dooley should have beat LSU in his first year but didn't.
Dooley beat Cincy when he played Jones with this talent we see on the field now.

Jones almost beat UGA (minus two of their best O players). We did beat SC with a great play by North but every other competitive game has been a blowout and now we are seeing the team flat out give up.

I love the energy Jones brings, the cute slogans etc. but lets be honest....Dooley would have fared just as well this year. We see the exact same level of intensity that Dooley produced with pretty much the exact same results.

When SEC rivals set new records against team 117 it is not improvement. We simply have not improved one iota under Jones and it has me concerned that this turn around (if we are having one) is going to be a lot longer than many of us have the stomach for.

Fire away...

Are you f^^^ing kidding me. Mrs. Dooley get off this forum. Your son screws up in Dallas now

I got no ammo to argue with you.

Wrong. Dooley was not going to beat USC. He proved that 3 times.

Fair enough.

He didn't face this year's version. Also, who is to say he would've lost to Vandy yesterday? Not to pump Dooley, but as bad as he was we won at least 5 every year. No reason to think this year would've been different. Right now I see no improvement.

True. Dooley faced Vandy with UT having NFL talent all over the offensive unt.

Butch faced Vandy with a freshman QB and Josh Smith.

Use your brain.

I see poor coaching right now. Maybe Butch will make some staff changes. If not we can probably look forward to better players with poor coaching. To contend you need quality in both areas.

He beat a top 10 team with us having crud for talent.

Coaching is happening.

No. Saying those thinking Dooley and Butch are a wash, are football stupid.

This team was so much more talented last year and got blown out by Vandy.

This years less talented team took the game to the end.

Nope, I'm not buying it. Are you sure its a talent problem?

I don't know how long many of the posters on this site are but I suspect the average age to be about 25. I have a bit more time watching Tennessee football and I can tell you that even during Majors growing pains the team was almost always competitive.

Your memory fails you because I was around then too. We lost to USC something like 44-0 one week and then to GA 48-0 the very next week. And this was in Majors 4th season. You know why? Because just like CBJ, Majors inherited a train wreck as well, however, what CBJ has inherited is even worse.

Not true.
We won a NT with bad coaching

I don't think Fulmer, Chavis and Cut were bad coaches at that time. And I know Cut left right before the NC game, but he was the OC that season up til that game.

Problems arose later when Sanders took full reigns of offense and Fulmer grew complacent and stagnant.

I do remember the year before those blowouts we only lost to GA by 1 in the "Herschel Walker runs over Bill Bates" game and then lost to USC by 3 a week later. The '81 blowout to GA and USC were in his 4th season and wasn't just a result of him inheriting a disaster or we would've have played both teams so close the year before.

So our good coach left and we turned to crap.
Good coach comes back and we have an ok year.
Good coach leaves crap again.

There is no point in arguing with these baffoons. ANYONE who thinks Derek Dooley is a better coach than Butch Jones or really any coach should be checked for insanity.

Dooley has been lauded as the worst hire of all-time by some writers and we are barely one year removed from his tenure. Whether you're happy with this year or not, it's absolutely asinine to to compare the two. Not a single expert this year believed this team would have a winning record, including those who love Butch Jones. If you expected UT to be a surprise team & contend, then that's your fault for not being grounded in reality.

The only thing threads like this do is provide rival coaching staffs with ammunition in recruiting. Unfortunately, the loons who think they are helping in any way by complaining are doing nothing besides hurting the team they supposedly love.

OK. Don't take any inference from this question, if we lose to KY next week does that make Dooley a better coach than Butch? Cause Dooley never lost to both Vandy and KY in the same year.

Dooley also never beat South Carolina, or any ranked team for that matter.
