Any better than Dooley?

Really def backfield? So you are telling me their backups are better than UT starters

Tell me when exactly did each starter depart? Not like they played the whole game with backups.

Also, their backup DBs were playing our backup QB, and receiving corps missing North. But oh yea, we have those SEC studs in Smith and Croom. Forgot.

Personally, I'm completely frustrated. I fully understand our talent /depth issues, the disadvantage of playing a true freshman qb, and the fact of the players having new systems and position coaches every season basically.
However, last night was very disappointing. Two weeks to prepare, bowl game on the line, senior night, huge because losing also meant losing all the extra practices and player development, and we came out and lost to vandy at home.
We have enough to beat vandy. No excuses for last night. Play calling sucked, the fake fg was stupid, and butch saying the staff called a great game is BS.
Do you guys feel like we as a team have progressed and improved as the season has gone on?

You think we are better than Auburn and Missouri or you would you have just felt better if the score were closer?

You were asking for the huge difference so I was just curious what huge difference you expected. So are you on the fire Butch bandwagon? I'm making a list, for educational purposes only of course.

I have a file where I save some quotes in case I need them later.

Better than? No. Should they have been able to be competitive? Yes

Nice job avoiding the vandy part of my statement, way to cherry pick

I am on the should have never hired jones in the first place bandwagin

So you believe scores matter. You're counting UGA as a moral victory then? And giving credit for USC?

I'm not cherry picking. I agree with you about Vandy. I didn't realize I was required to cite every point you've made in the thread if I have follow up questions. We should beat Vandy every year. Fair enough?

But speaking of cherry picking, are you for firing Jones? That was my question to you.

This team was getting better at most facets of the game until Worley went down after the USCe game. Losing your starting QB and putting in a true freshman who should not have been playing will make a team look bad.

What about special teams? What about defense?

Do you actually think this team will be better next year? Cause I don't. I don't look at the wins and losses but how the team progressed as the season ticks along. This team regressed in about every facet. Unless Riley Ferguson is it we still have no QB and it doesn't appear we're getting one in this class.

We have some guys coming that can play right away the youth will be a year older and the schedule will be a touch better. Yes we should be better. How much better is debatable.

Try looking at it from a different perspective.
Forget recruiting since it has no bearing on this year.
Take the top ten teams in the rankings.
Pick any coaching staff from one of those teams.
Pretend that staff had come in here this year.
Given the exact same injuries with the exact same schedule, would we have won more games ?

I see only adding beating Vandy.

I like Butch Jones, I think he is good for TN football, and I think he will build a winning team.
He apparently, at least so far, is a hell of a recruiter.
But I don't see anything like an SEC dynasty.

The way I see it, Butch is about even for the year. We were favored in four games and have won four. Ideally, we would win the games we are supposed to and pull out one or two we aren't supposed to.

That said, this season is not a success and losing to Vandy will earn a failing grade every time.

We're good and in good hands. Don't worry.

Future is bright.

I like your posts. Truly I do. But you are living in a fantasy land. There is nothing to make anyone truly believe that we are in good hands. The recruiting is encouraging and beating USCe was awesome, but the playcalling, the lack of adjustments, the inability to beat an average Vandy team, and the constant coach speak instead of owning this sht storm all show that we may not be in good hands.

It may be too early to judge, but that goes both ways. There is more proof on the bad side right now than the good.

Absolutely not. We appeared to be on a nice trajectory after the GA and SCar games..... it's been nothing but a very ugly, steep regression since then. I'm convinced 100% that this team TODAY could not beat either WKU or So Alabama.

Disagree.

This is totally a talent issue. We lost a game by 4 points to a team very comparable to us.

The only ones enraged are the people that think it is still 1990 ish.

In my opinion, play calling and adjustments are difficult to judge against superior opponents, which was about 2/3 of our schedule this year. Coach speak and jersey color have no impact on the game.

Most coaches get a pass when their starting quarterback gets injured. Our top three have all been hurt at one point or another.

There's plenty to be concerned about, most of which reared its head last night, but there's also were some positives this year. In the end, with Vandy and SC cancelling each other out, we probably finished about where our talent level was.

This season is a failure in my mind, but in reality I'm not sure how much different 5-7 is from 6-6. Regardless, I just don't agree that there's more negative "proof" of anything. We obviously disagree in that regard.

What about special teams? What about defense?

You obviously have forgotten how terrible last year's defense was. It was record breaking. They took a step in the right direction this year despite starting guys like D. Sapp, who would be a special teams guy on almost any other SEC team.

Special teams took a step back with the loss of Patterson on returns. As the year progressed, the unit took another step back due to injuries. Special teams is one place where depth is most obvious. When your second & third stringers are littered with walk-ons & freshmen, you're bound to get worse as people get hurt throughout the year.

With that said, it was piss poor special teams play here at the end of the year. I'm not disagreeing. I'm just saying the above reason is pretty legit from an outsider looking in.

I thought the defense played well enough to win yesterday. Thanks, in part at least, to the turnovers they forced.

I agree, they played well enough to win. My problem is that everyone knew Vandy's offense was almost solely Jordan Mathews and we failed to cover him. Several times he was wide open with literally no Vols within 10 yrds.

I thought we did a better job of lining up in the second half, but I agree completely. No matter what we tried, we weren't capable of stopping him.

I'm referring to progression from game one of this year. The team was better earlier in the year than they are finishing. Everybody's writing the KY game down as a win. I predicted a loss to Vandy and if that happened a possible loss to KY. This team will struggle to score against Appy State at this point.

If any SEC game, especially on the road, doesn't scare you at this point, you haven't been paying attention. I'm curious as to what the line will be on this game.

Man, a bowl game is going to be a struggle again. It's hard to find six games on that schedule to feel confident about.

Coverage bust are expected early in the year but at this point in the season should be a rarity. I really question this staffs ability to coach these kids up and scheme.
