'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Sutton and Randolph are 2 guys that come to mind who were both extremely underrated in their recruiting rankings. Gaulden looks to be getting the same treatment.

Sutton was a 3 star and this kid has been great starting as a true freshmen. He is going to make some mistakes but he looks like is going to be a future star on the defense in the future.

Sutton is the star of the defense now. The secondary has the best players on our defense in it.

Breaker, how would you rank the DB's in this class? I think it is the strength if the class

The whole back seven of the defense is the strength if this class. I'll say this, I wouldn't be surprised if a freshman started opposite Sutton next year. There's nothing to stop one from what I see. And Gaulden just might be that guy.

You think Payne will see time at nickel? Can you see him possibly beating out Swafford and Toney

It was either Fortenberry or Hubbs that said recently they think Gaulden will likely start day 1 at nickel.

I can't wait for Gaulden to get here. I feel like he can play any position in the secondary. Do you guys see Payne at nickel?

I think Payne will be a great lockdown corner but I dont see him playing nickel. That position requires a special type of athlete.

we talked about this in another thread - not sure where - but I think payne and Gaulden will have a chance to start day 1

our secondary has been much improved this year - but after we bring in these athletes next year and get more depth I expect another jump - could easily be strength of the team next year

We've got walk-one who can't tackle well there. What type of athlete does lining up a slot WR and covering him take? He actually a very good fit there with his skill set.

I think Gaulden is faster amd has better cover skills. I dont see many slot receivers or tight ends burning him.

Relax I love Payne also and think he will see ample playing time at corner just not nickel. Payne and Sutton is a nasty combo at corner.

What's the logic behind that? He's quicker and smaller than Gaulden. Payne is also more suspectible to the jump ball. Why put him outside when he can mirror the smaller quicker slot WRs. Payne also tackles well so he would be a good blitzer as well.

That's why I assumed he would play nickel. I think Gaulden can play well at any of the secondary positions

I want Gaulden paired up outside with Sutton. Would give us two big rangy CBs. Sutton showed his worth on jump balls this past game. Danny Woodson is a big strong(showed Sutton around on a few blocks), athletic WR. The fades were supposed to be tailor made for him. Hell Sutton wasn't having that. Now add Gaulden on the other side who is a great athlete too. I'm more excited to watch UT football than I've been in a long time. I just want to see this secondary come together. And watch how the front seven plays knowing the back end is taking care of WRs. There will be no fear attacking QBs and ball carriers.

I really like the thought of having Kelly and McDowell at safety, Sutton and Gaulden at corner, and Payne at nickel. With Foreman, Swafford, Johnson, and Mosley providing depth, I think we will have one of the best secondaries in the country in a couple of years

Then add Bryant, Bates, JRM, Mouhoun, and Weathered under that at LB. Just add a little pressure to bust the pipe(QB). :)

Both DB and LB look very promising, buy they also serve as a reminder that we need some elite talent at DT/DE as well to round out the D.

I really think Carr and Saulsberry can be forces the next few years. Add in Barnett and two big DE/DT like Lambert and Thomas and we can have some solid depth inside.

Agree on Sauls. He was really starting to play well before the injury, he can provide very good depth.

I want some playmakers up front. Solid depth is alright but I want guys that offenses have to account for.

Gaulden comments on the UGA game...

I thought the stadium was electrifying, giving our defense tons of momentum on key situations and our offense found a comfort level to drive the ball. The players fed off the crowd and my ears are still ringing. I saw a glimpse of the future dominance last night.
