The Runner's thread

Thanks man. My issue is my diet. I always crave bad stuff after a day at school. Any advice for stopping yourself from over eating? And eating the wrong stuff....

My meals are usually really healthy it's just the junk I eat between meals which is killing me.

Spend two weeks without, period. You'll be close to kicking it. Drop down ad knock out push-ups or sit-ups when you crave. It'll remind you.

What do you mean by close to kicking it? Thanks for the advice.

One thing I have changed is that I pretty much only drink water now, as I used to drink more coke than water.

Not craving it or habitually doing it any more.

I believe that the science says about 21 days fully licks a habit.

Easiest way for me to tell you to stop over eating to portion out your meals before eating and once your done eating those portions you have to tell youself you are done. If you feel hungry after you have eaten give yourself ten minutes or more before you go back to get something else. I am almost willing to bet you won't be hungry after waiting that amount of time. As far as the portions go follow what the portions on boxes say. Meat wise make sure you aren't eating meat that is bigger than the size of your fist. Eat smaller meals more often too. That will kick start your metabolism and will help you burn calories quicker and help you feel fuller with smaller amounts of food. Try to eat as much veggies and fruits as possible. Good luck Stephen and hope this helps.

I need to run. This is killing me. I've been off work since early Wednesday morning and due to my teeth I haven't been able to run. They are getting a lot better, but I'm fairly certain I still need to wait at least two or three more days. Ate a potato chip today though. Boom.

Glad you found a pair of new shoes that you like smokey. Hope you blister the paths and trails in them.

and welcome stephen. My recommendations would be to start consistently weighing yourself on a regular basis and calorie count too. I use LIVESTRONG.COM - Lose Weight & Get Fit with Diet, Nutrition & Fitness Tools | LIVESTRONG.COM for my diet. It lets you choose where you want to be at weight wise, how much you want to lose a week and formulates how many calories you should be consuming daily. It has been fantastic for me. I also use OxyElite Pro. It has come under scrutiny, but I've had no issues and I don't use it as a pre workout energy boost. I'd do the research if I were you and decide if you want to try it. It basically just boosts your metabolism and helps you burn calories. Again though, decide for yourself if it's worth the risk.

I appreciate the advice guys. I am taking it all on board.

How often do you guys run? I try and run or at least excercise every weekday....

I try to run four times a week sometimes five but you don't want to run everyday of the week because your body needs rest and you can get injuried a lot easier if you run that much. Try an every other day type of thing when you run. That will help with recovery.

I run 3-4 days a week. Sometimes twice a day. It's your body so you have to be the judge as to what you can handle. Everyone is different

so I was already prepping to do my first full marathon in March. Now a buddy of mine currently in Afghanistan wants to train for a triathlon when he gets back around June. Oh boy.

Ok, we'll I usually rest on weekends but after your advice maybe a mid week break is the best option...

Looking forward to my run later, I am a little stiff though so I won't over do it seeing as I did my best ever run yesterday. :good!:

Well then I thank and respect you for it. I don't have the guts to be in the military, you are very brave. Veterans Day here may be over but I still send thoughts of good health to our military and allies all year round.

There you go, my 2,500th post.

Just finished my run for the day, just over 9km. About 2/3 of the route was hilly. Very tough, suffered multiple stitches during it too. I feel like I have definitely achieved something though.

I am not down, just tired. Will do a very small run to tomorrow and have a break on Wednesday. Thanks for the encouragement though.

I do runs typically on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. Do crossfit style or weightroom stuff on Tues, Thurs and Saturday. It's not that you can't work out every day, just mix it up so you're not doing the same thing over and over. That's what messes up recovery.

hmm, I am new to Volnation (as a poster) and just found this thread! I am a fairly new runner - a little over a year. I ran my first 1/2 marathon in April in Nashville. I have been running 5k around Knoxville lately. I will never be a fast runner, but at least I am doing something. Kind of getting burned out on it and trying to stay motivated. Glad to have found this thread!
