Why do people in Tennessee suck so bad at math? What is this "deny him the opportunity to start for two years" business?
Bray isn't going to stay for his Senior year. Worley will start his Junior and Senior year... 1 + 1 = 2. It is VERY common for college QBs to start for 2 years. I don't know the statistics but I'd be surprised if the norm is more or less than that.
Also.. let's assume Worley would have redshirted and started as a sophomore and then as a junior. Who's to say he wouldn't leave for the NFL before his senior season?
Also.. let's assume Worley would have redshirted and Tennessee goes 5-7 followed by back to back 7-5 seasons.. Dooley most likely would be fired and Worley would be learning a new offense in 2014 as a senior. How fair would that be?
Also.. let's assume Dooley stuck with Simms all the way up to the Vanderbilt game. The game is tied and we are fighting for a bowl appearance when all of a sudden.. Simms gets hurt enough that he has to come out of the game. Dooley has no choice to burn Worley's redshirt and looking back we're all like "dang it. i bet we could have beat south carolina with worley at qb."
The moral of the story is this. Play to win the game and you'll have less regrets. I understand the importance of building toward the future but at some point you have to WIN. Dooley is wrapping up his 2nd year as head coach and if he doesn't start winning, he won't be around to see Worley start a game in 2014 wheter it be as a junior or as a senior. His time to start winning is NOW. It sucks that Worley is losing his redshirt in the process but right now the most important thing to Tennessee's football program and the most important thing to Dooley as a husband and father is for Tennessee to play in a bowl game.
