Game Thread: Lady Vols v MTSU, Away, Thurs. Nov 20th, 7:30PM, ESPN+

Do

Don't know about the rest of the violations but the female ref said Mia lunged forward. She did not move her feet just lunged. Such a BS call. Like I said officiating was TERRIBLE. Cooper was held all night and she had all she could take of it.
I used to do that with relative frequency just due to nerves lol. That was such a weird call. Also gave Barker a flop warning for nothing.

I made it there early and got to watch the shootaround. Noticed something really odd. I got to watch from a little above and directly behind several of our players shooting 3s. Three of them (Hurst was one) would take the pass with their right hand, situate it as they went into their pre-shot motion, but would bring the ball over as if they were lining it up with their left eye before releasing the ball in line with their right eye.

I've never seen that from a shooter before, and we had three who did it every time.

Has anyone ever seen that, or seen that taught? Hurst also has that bunny hop into her set shot from outside. Makes me wonder if she had a sudden growth spurt to her current height, because it's the shot form you'd expect to see from a young, undersized, understrength player.

Janiah definitely has the best shot form, and Zee's is next. As mentioned before, Prawl's has almost no spin at all. On a long 3-pointer, it doesn't even rotate halfway.

The refs were bewildering. I never figured them out, beyond that they'd evidently never seen a player hold or clasp another player the way MTSU did, rather obviously, too.

Our girls were so much bigger that when there was contact, usually the MTSU player went flying. But most of the time, the LV had the correct position or lane. But these refs called the impact rather than the position.

A lot of posts mentioned the lady ref, but the guy with the darkest hair seemed most out of his element, making the majority of the most bizarre calls.

A lot to be happy about in this game. Was it perfect? No, but the energy on the press was there. The speed at which they were advancing the ball was there, and the adjustments to who was playing where on the press was noticeable. Overall, the team took some great steps forward over the last week. It was great to see. Now it's time to start putting up some higher numbers on the scoreboard, and all will be well in Lady Vol Land!

Great comparison. Def see that in her game.

Syd is one of my all time favorites. I was obsessed with her as a kid. Used to pretend I was Syd bombing it from deep in the back yard 🤣

One of the best “Three and D” players we ever had.
I liked the fact she had a open 3 and decided to drive it for the easy layup. 2 in hand is worth 3 in the bush .

The good was defense was solid. The press was good enough and the half court defense dominated what they were trying to do. We made them run that clock and many times shoot very poor shots. They got 15 free throws should've been more like five not blaming the team for being called for some of those fouls.
I wish we had a consistent three point shooter or two. It looks like the biggest problem we face this season.

Still can’t hit free throws or 3’s. 15 TO’s not terrible. Hope they Gel

I'm not the Analytics type of person... Team should play to what their strengths are, driving to basketball and mid range game... The occasional dagger from 3 is just icing on the cake for me...

One thing that another person just posted. The team needs to practice Free Throws all day long but as usual Freshman are horrible Free Throw shooters..

What I enjoyed most about the game was Lady Vols ran sets in half court offense looking for the best available shot...
We opened with a double high post set featuring Zee and Janiah, which was fun to watch. Ironically, it was out of that set that we hit our opening threes. But the coaches definitely installed or worked on offense, as well as their press.

Throughout the game, even though MTSU was clogging the middle, we still got some people open down the lane. For whatever reason, we were too hesitant (or late seeing) to make the pass. But they'll see it on video and be looking for it next time.

An under appreciated aspect of the game was how contained and team oriented Robinson was, as well as not just heaving the vall up on drives. She hit 4 of 7!
There was a point in the first half, after hitting her two previous shots, that she got that look in her eye and drove aggressively toward the basket. It wasn't there, and I could just see she'd relapsed into her last season's role. But then she caught herself, stopped, and kicked the ball out. Her eyes got calm again and she re-inhabited her LV point guard role, pulling back to assess and run the offense. I felt really proud for her, like witnessing a personal victory!

I was encouraged that the team we'd seen before is not the team we're going to be watching in March. I think we fans can safely join the players and "trust the process."

Did Roy Gulbeyan change his hair color dye? It does not look to be that deep black color it used to be.
Thanks for the clue.;) Now, after looking at his impressive resume... I really don't know what to make of last night's calls! My honest and benign impression at the game was that he'd just been moved up to this level of competition and was unfamiliar with the physicality. Obviously I was wrong about that!

I dunno... maybe he was actually giving the girls a preview of how the game would be called in the WNBA? Or, maybe he overcompensated to keep things safe in a game where one team was so physically outsized?

Never a bad night when the Vols put a tick in the W column. A solid early season performance with a team that has had some minor setbacks (team member dismissed, team member taking time out, etc) that can definitely disrupt rhythm and chemistry. I saw some flashes of brilliance and it was exciting to watch. The shot chart shows no real mid-range shots, mostly in the paint and around the arc. Not a criticism, just an interesting observation. Go Lady Vols!

good movement by the players who didn't have the ball on offense yesterday. no standing and watching one player try to make things happen. good to see

Freshmen were moving so much better. Prawl was pretty frozen the first couple games. Just nerves from a young player. She was so much more active.

I was super impressed with Mya as well. She was in the paint scrapping for boards and getting putbacks.

That’s how we want it. Our system is not designed for mid range. It’s pretty similar to what Utah did under Lynne Roberts. Very little mid-range either threes or at the rim.
