Coaches lose. Coaches win. It’s football. Not a single reputable media has Heupel on the hot seat. Only the uneducated and short sighted do. Figure out for yourself where you fit in.
There it is, you are the big brain, smartest in the room, who has probably never played a competitive sport in all you life. Also, what is this reputable media you speak of, a bunch of self absorbed douches, who like you feel they are smarter and above us commoners. Please critique my punctuation and spelling as I’m sure you are the best here at that

Heupel has been great for the Vols. I think he has been doing OJT in the SEC and that is okay.

He does need to make a step change to get to the next level. I think it is bringing in some "non-friends" into the coaching staff and a disciplinarian coach (like Golesh) who is happy to be the a-hole on the practice field. He needs to reduce his cognitive load on the sideline too because he mismanages game clock / critical times in the game.

He's a winner and he transformed this team from laughing stock to contender. He does need one big step to be really championship calibre. But he's our coach.

So
Poor football team year in and year out? We were in the playoffs last year. Could’ve beat UGA if we had a kicker and I think the kicker and some ill timed turnovers cost us this game as well. My God it’s like yall dont even watch the games and just get a notification on your phone that say “we lost” and yall are ready to move on from a coach that most teams would kill for.
you think Tennessee will ever be elite? How long? Would’ve should’ve could’ve. Yeah if and but…now back to reality. Tennessee will never be elite, it’s just not for us. But I’ll be here waving my orange shaker!

There are may be two “elite” programs right now. OSU and UGA. Really just OSU at the moment. Everyone else can and will beat each other.

He’d be coaching for his job the rest of the year at almost any of the real championship contenders in the conference. We haven’t gotten one in 30 years so we’ll be happy if he brings us another 8 win season.

Yall really need to get over this playoff ****. If we haven’t learned by now the expanded playoffs are a joke. How may absolutely horrible games did we watch till they even got competitive. The goal is to win the SEC and be a top dog making a run, the trajectory is neither as of now… what we saw was the peak, now we’re watching a coach tread water and fighting for air in the conference.
I know a lot of sports is about being insane, but it was quite insane before the game. We were sitting 6th in the SEC and we had to have 10 threads yesterday afternoon about how we get into the playoffs. Ridiculous. Tennessee would be trucked in the playoffs, and you all know this.

Pretty hard for me to be a broken drunk about missing the playoffs after the game. We had no chance to get in before the game.

It's football in the sec. It will happen.

Sadly, this is turning out exactly like his tenure at ucf. He's more than earned his chance to turn this around.

Why would that matter?
If you are the only team paying $10 million dollars, and everybody else is paying $1 million dollars, then you can pick whomever you want. If everybody everywhere pays $10 million, you don't have any say - so. You don't get to choose who you want. You end up paying $10 million for Butch Jones in that situation. Even more horrifying, the practical utility of $10 million over $5 million might be zero to most anybody. That's the ugly situation facing college football for about the last 15-20 years.

Along with that, Tennessee is not naturally advantaged by geography, and is just "pretty good" with NIL, so it's just a "pretty good" environment for recruiting.

So in this situation, the best person, by a mile, you can hire is Johnny Majors. He's the perfect combination of all factors. You can see how there's nobody out there like Johnny Majors. Who's actually out there is Kevin Steele. Some people would say Gruden.

In all seriousness, I don’t think he should be fired by any means but I’m just tired of never being elite. Alabama hired Scut Farkis, lost to Florida state and now miraculously puts it all together. We have not won the sec since Fulmer. That stings. This is year 5 and we should be in the hunt. All we do is lay eggs.
I think this is how most sensible, sober fans feel.

You forgot the period at the end...

Not sold on him building a program that can go out and compete for the SEC championship. I do not think you can skirt around that monumental fact.

So then how in the **** would I believe he can build a team capable of making the playoff, let alone win it?

We didn't belong last year. The Ohio State loss proved that. Our roster was not close. We only snuck into the playoff because we 'beat' garbage assed teams from UF UA & OU. So far this season against those same teams, we're a sucky 0-2 and trending down..

We have one legit win under CJH, and that was 2022 Alabama. Nothing else. Zilch.

This year, our SEC wins are against 3 more garbage assed teams. Mississippi State, Arkansas and Kentucky. Who have combined for a whopping 1 SEC win between them this year. And that was when two of them played each other. I don’t know if Kentucky beat Auburn last night. But if they didn't, then it's still only one win between the 3 of their sorry asses.

I'm out on this ******** experience and experiment. Hire a real winner. A program builder. Somebody who's done it all before.

This ain't the staff to do it. 5 years is plenty of time. Make the change. GoVols 🍊

We didn’t belong last year. We’ve finally started to luck into some relatively easy conference schedules recently. It seemed like for years and years one or both of our random SEC West foes would just happen to be having their best teams in 20 years. Last year was probably the easiest schedule since Fulmer. A playoff team should have navigated that with a single loss to UGA at worst.

Next year the difficulty of the schedule takes a major leap forward. We are going to get beat up and if we haven’t upgraded our toughness significantly it’s going to be a very unenjoyable year.

I feel confident he’s safe for 3 more years. Deservedly so. If not another playoff appearance in those three years it’d be time to explore options. If not at least two 9+ win years in the next three,I’d support looking elsewhere. Could get 9 this year really but I’d still want 2 legit shots in the next three. Just be in the mix and not totally be out of it by early November.
so your willing to put up with this mediocrity for 3 more years just because he won’t a few games here and there! Let’s not forget that he’s one of the top paid coaches in the country but has not won anything of real relevance other than the scoot the poop award!

Heupel is great at working with QBs, doing more with less on offense. He's also good at building a culture. His downsides are fire and aggression he doesn't have that. So the team isn't motivated at times. That is fine if he has someone on the staff to do it for him. Ekler was that guy in the past. The team lacks that killers edge that some teams have. They want to out skill and scheme everyone and avoid a rock fight, sometimes you have to rock fight.

Since Fulmer? That's waaaaaaay too far back to go. Stay current.

Start with the portal era. We don't recruit high school good enough and we don't portal good enough to compete for titles.. So we're a mid assed team until further improvement is made to the general manager and head coach positions. This **** starts at the top. As always.
