Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

I guess. It might just be me, but I never cared or watched, and didn't know anyone who cared or watched.. and still don't know anyone who cares or watches women's basketball.

I don't watch a lot of things which are popular and influential. They don't need me, though.

Put it this way, Sportscenter did a 15 minute segment on her the day she passed away. People didn't watch women's basketball, but they knew her.

Anyway, getting off track. This is still a massive bummer of a day. Vitello is the only coach I've seen in Knoxville which could match Summitt's relative success in their sport. He should've been here for decades. That's not replaceable, even if the one who follows him is pretty good. This was a dynasty of the Nick Saban sort brewing and the rug has been pulled from under our feet in the most Tennessee way possible. No one from MLB bothered to pilfer Tim Corbin from the Vandy Boys, but it happened to us. Sucks.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this but I find an interesting dynamic here. When Kiffin bolted for his "dream job," people set sofas on fire in the streets and he's still public enemy number one. In essence, Vitello has done the same thing but he's getting all the love out the door. Yes, Tony accomplished more in his time but the result is really the same. On to the next.

I made the same comparison. I think it was that Kiffin blue balled us. Tony spent almost 10 years here and won big. Kiffin had everyone bought in, had a decent season considering the roster, was recruiting at a high level, and dumped us.

Just had a chance to watch the presser. DW sure seemed stressed. I agree with him that we should be proud of the program CTV built and the opportunity. You don't just replace a national championship coach and cross your fingers. Seems all the former players are on the Ellander endorsements. If he goes a different route and it crashes then White's legacy has a huge blemish.

Maybe we can dampen the "Danny White chased him out" narrative a little. TV has been friends with Hobbs since they played at Mizzou together.

Unless the Giants buy him better pitching and a few more hitters, he ain’t going to the World Series, much less win it. Heck, he’s fighting both the Dodgers and Padres for the division.

I’m still puzzled by some people not seeming to grasp the fact that he’s leaving to manage the San Francisco Giants. You’d think, given some of the reactions, that he was making a lateral move to another college program. This is literally a historic move. Legends like Augie Garrido and Skip Bertman never got this opportunity. If Jay Johnson were offered the chance to manage a top ten franchise, I guarantee he’d be on the first plane out of Baton Rouge.
On the surface it appears to be a great move. But he's going to manage a fringe playoff team in a town that wants championships, and one whose biggest rival appear to be the 90s Bulls of baseball. Maybe he'll work some magic there but it's not likely to work out well. The days of the major league manager being lionized are over. These guys are nothing more than middle managers who have many bosses ahead of them.

At UT he created enormous equity for himself that few coaches ever have. If he stayed another ten years then you're likely looking at another two national titles and maybe three or four if you get really lucky.

Other than the superficial upgrade of going from college to pro, it's really a bizarre move.

It's completely different

Kiffin left after a single 7-6 season for another college job. TV is leaving after 8 seasons for a professional job after winning everything there was to win in the sport.

Tony Basilio and crew are ripping Danny White. I don’t understand why. He basically debunked the false rumors and plans to conduct a full fledged coaching search, where Elander is a candidate. This is the right move. Is DW the villain here? I don’t think so.
What was false? WBB receives more money than baseball and far more per player.

Not in real NIL they don’t. Yes the one they split for the entire athletic department yes, but our collective gives FAR more to the baseball players than they ever will for WBB. It’s a stupid argument made by stupid people that just want to whine!

@Stoerner Fumbles i know you are avoiding yousaidism, but do you think it’s Elander’s job?
I have no news. I know a lot heavyweight donors are pulling for him. That’s rare for an internal candidate. It’s not White’s MO, but I sure think he’s the right guy for the job.

True, but it is still a vicious gut punch. I can feel my BVS flaring up

I hope the Giants go 0-162.... screw that organization

Did you listen to DW presser - he said what the split was...... Baseball got a whopping 750k
Devils advocate response but 4.15%. $150k not a huge difference. He also said we were number 1 in the country in funding baseball overall. Yeah baseball got less but not much less. Should it have gotten more? I myself would have liked it to but I’m not gonna pretend I know the math behind it. If you go on attendance alone, its possible that lady vols bball brought in just as much revenue as baseball ticket/concession sales, and they require less money to be compensated to staff and players, so it’s certainly possible they could actually be more profitable.
