Avery Johnson makes the most sense. He's the best I've seen out of the names mentioned so far, but doesn't like he'd be interested.
I just don’t see why Avery Johnson leaves Kansas State. Makes zero sense to me unless it’s just a money play where we double his NIL, but didn’t we just walk through a situation where we had a guy who was only here for the money side of it?

How so? How do you expect us to find a QB if we aren't reaching out to see who might be interested?
That's not the way it works.

They will let you know if they have potential interest by entering the portal.

Nope to King or Johnson.

I mean there are other names out there I suppose since we are just talking hypotheticals, but you are fooling yourself if you think we are realistically finding someone much better than that. It's unlikely either Johnson or King come here, but if they wanted to, we should thank our lucky stars.

That may be the way it is INTENDED to work. But in all practicality, that isn't the way it works. And there is nothing illegal about a NIL agency reaching out to gauge interest.

You can't be serious. You don't think Tennessee was talking to Gillespie before he was in the portal? You don't think Oregon had Gabriel before he was in the portal? Chaz Lanier was basically a UT commit when he officially entered the portal. If you don't think that schools and representatives are reaching out to players and their representatives before they enter the portal then I want to live in your world.

They had all expressed interest in entering the portal.
What Nico's crew did with Oregon is slimy. Pretty much universal agreement. So much so that the coach made a call.
If you believe just because others do it and it is not "technically" illegal are justifications for doing the same.....I don't want to live in your world.

Schools reach out to players not in the portal, coaches have good records saying other schools have reached out to their players. You can't deny it happens.

Planning called Heupel because he knew what Nico's people were doing. I am sure there are plenty of coaches who get those calls and don't call the other coach. You're being absurd if you think team and players not in the portal don't talk.

I can tell your reading comprehension isn't great, but I didn't say it was "technically" legal or illegal or even on, I said it happens. Other coaches have said it happens. Schools reach out to players to gauge interest and talk numbers. This isn't up for debate.

My statement was it would be a horrible look for TN to approach Haynes King.

I'll stick with that statement - 100%.

If anyone has told of their intentions to enter the portal, that's a whole different animal than trying to force your current school to renegotiate by not showing up for the last spring practice or not answering your phone the night before the spring game.

Good for you, but that's not what I responded to. You said "that's not the way it works" and that players enter portal before talking to schools and letting them know if they have interest, and that just doesn't happen all the time. Tennessee has absolutely reached out to other teams players, and other teams reached out to ours. Every coach admits this happens. I'm not arguing for the morality or ethics of it, I'm saying it happens whether you are cool with it or not.

Nope. I never said players enter the portal before talking to schools and letting them know they have interest.

I said schools reaching out to players who have expressed no interest is "not the way it works".

But we're moving into a loop that's taking us nowhere.

We should not be going after another team's starting QB who has expressed ZERO interest in UT or the portal in general.
It's slimy and a horrible look.

Heupel has just put TN in a positive national light - don't screw it up by tampering with other teams.

He's happy at Tech.

Plus it would be a horrible look on TN.
Agreed. Going after him if he voluntarily enters the portal is one thing. Poaching him after Lanning alerts you to the shopping trip verses poaching Nico...is a bad look. Plus, we won't have to wipe your tears for GT losing their QB at the last minute.

We don’t know yet. But why bring him in and chance losing Merk, GMac or both? Does King know Heupels system like Merk? Has he earned the trust of the players and the staff like Merk? No he hasn’t. Also, what guarantee can you give that he could just walk in here, learn the system enough to operate it at a high level and beat out Merk? Oh that’s right you don’t. He isn’t worth it imo.
From what I saw of what we ran last season, I don't see why a high level QB couldn't operate it honestly, especially one that doesn't hesitate to run like GT QB did, I think that was another reason Hooker was as successful as he was and his WR would actually catch the dang ball.
I also think Huepel is changing up his system some what as we saw last year a lot of teams played the high safety more to keep the deepball threat down.

So we want a kid willing to bail on his team this late into spring for a bigger NIL payday. Wouldn't this negate the "Josh is fighting the system" story?
Yep. The more I think about it, BOT might be right. Maybe we roll with the kids we evaluated and signed and bring in a depth piece. Any guy you bring in will be behind the curve from the jump. Might as well show loyalty and faith to the kids you signed and keep UT in a very strong position from a PR standpoint. Sure won't hurt recruiting either.
