I don't get it. No one predicted we would beat Bama, LSU, Florida, and Pitt and have a chance to win 10-11 games this year. We have played above our heads all year long. Now, we have a really bad loss to a bad SC team, and we're trying to find something wrong with us. Why can't the reason be that we have played above our heads all year, especially with the lack of talent we have on defense. We went to a road environment at night, we played horrible and also lost our starting QB, both starting corners, and a starting WR while also missing our best LB and at the same time SC played outstanding. Yes, some of that was due to our poor defense, but anyone who watches that game can see that Rattler played at a level he had never played at before. He was dropping dimes, even when on the run he was putting balls on the money. Sometimes that happens. Why do we have to find something wrong?

I don't understand this firing everybody, looking for internal problems, trying to find something to blame. Fact is, we are still a low talent team on defense and SC played above their heads and we played horribly. But this doesn't mean that everything is burning down, or that our program is about to be in shambles, or whatever else I've seen.

Look at other teams. UGA went 8-4 in year 1 with a loss to Vandy. Yes, they went to the NC in year 2, but they played no one to get there. They had a pitiful SOC that year, and they got blown out by AU in the regular season. They got to go to the NC because they played AU again, instead of Alabama in Atlanta and then went on to lose to Bama for the championship game. That playoff appearance doesn't happen if they play Bama in Atlanta.

In year 3, GA went 11-3, with a blowout loss to a mediocre LSU team, a loss to Bama in Atlanta, and a loss to a mediocre Texas team in the bowl game.
In year 4, Kirby lost to a 4-8 (4-8!!!!) SC team in a day time game at Willie B and then got blown out by LSU in Atlanta.

In year 5, Kirby went 8-2 with blowout losses to Florida and Alabama. Uncompetitive losses in both games.

And Kirby did that with far more, far more talent than what Heup has. Our roster would not compete with any of those rosters, especially on defense, and we're wanting to burn the program down looking for answers because of one bad loss. So many are panicked because of one bad loss? Give me a break! That doesn't mean that some changes shouldn't be made on defense, but I just don't understand why there are so many looking for explanations to what happened. It's year 2.

Good post.

The contradiction is hard to understand. Handily beat two SECW powerhouses for all intents and purposes and easily beat our SECE thorn in our side and get absolutely drug around the backyard by a hapless SC team.

I think I would choose this 10-2 season, but it would be easier to grasp a 10-2 season with losses to Bama and LSU.

At least I think it is. Like I said my brains has the confuses for what just happened. Lol.

Glad to have the Bama monkey off our back so it’s been good.

agreed.
nobody needs to be fired because of that game. saying otherwise is lazy and emotional.
Saturday sucked....lots of reasons for that, some of which i would maybe challenge as being a good thing.
lots of reasons to still look at this season as a slam dunk success, w/out question.

to sum up, you can be disappointed at what we lost, as far as the opportunity this season presented, and still be very excited about this season and overall direction of the program. this season has been great. it just can't be....greater...anymore.

can still finish 11-2 and as a top 5-10 program. sign me up for that every year.
This is exactly the point I was trying to make when I asked if people would still consider 8-4 a successful season, since pre-season consensus was that 8-4 would be a success, regardless how we got there. It's disappointing considering the position we played ourselves into and what slipped away, but overall it is still a successful season. 10-3 or 11-2 after bowl games is an incredible season, relative to our preseason expectations. In preseason, I would've called 11-2 a borderline miracle.

Yuck. I mean...I guess we could've lost and walked away with 0 points, but damn I hate losing to penalty kicks ugh

Not the best weekend of sports.

Now we need to go at least tie England. What a huge game. Gonna be fun to watch though.

It’s true Martinez and banks Both have been awful since they’ve arrived

There's a difference. Martinez has been a successful DB coach at this level. Has Banks been a successful DC?

I'm glad it isn't my job. But Heupel has to assess the D. He either believes these guys are capable and is willing to risk the success of the program on it... or he replaces one or more.

It’s a public message board nothing I’m saying is violating any terms I know of. This defensive staff could make a backfield of champ Bailey Eric berry earl Thomas and Richard Sherman look bad
Did I accuse you of anything?

I may be Russian, but, this aint the Gestapo. Just seems like we quickly forget how ****** we were. I'm so appreciative of a great season, stability, and a good coach. Previous to losing to Count Cockula from Cola, we had played better than anticipated.

Truth is we have/had no talent on defense.

Personally, I think the wins over UF, LSU, Bama felt better than the loss to SCar hurt. It felt bad, but not equally opposite or more (😆) than those wins felt good.

Not looking to argue, but could you answer one question? What does the data say about teams with lesser talent that play better defense? Makes me think those less talented players are better coached.

There is no way to really answer this. A lot to unpack.

First, I’ve never said the defensive coaching was great.

Second, there is no way to really know this unless a team played our same schedule and simulated the games.

Third, generally, there are probably half of the SEC teams that have better talent on defense than us. I would hope we would all agree that Alabama, Georgia, LSU, A&M do. I would have to compare Arkansas and Florida. Yet, we are 9-2 behind Georgia.

The 3 weakest position units on our team are RB, TE, and the secondary. Surprisingly (not), if you evaluate the last 5 recruiting classes, those are the 3 units with the lowest rated players.

So, let’s do some critical thinking. It’s all about probability. When you play 12 games, all of these units are going to have poorer performances. Let’s throw out Ball State, Akron, and UT-Martin. The secondary played well against LSU and Kentucky. They played ok against Pitt and Mizzou and the second half of UGA. They played poorly against UF, Bama, and USCe. So, they played roughly the probabilities. The hope is they aren’t just pathetic (like USCe) so that the offense can score enough. But they generally played toward the mean. The group is just average (or below) in relative talent and was always going to give up plays in 12 games.

Can coaching be better? Sure. But the “data” confirms that it’s our weakest group. I didn’t really do that research until today. But it’s all right there. We need better coaching, but we also dearly need better dudes in our secondary. This isn’t difficult to understand.

In about 2 months I agree, the recency has me befuddled lol. Who gives up 63 points to THAT team. Just gotta laugh at this point. 🥴

Sadly I am really nervous about this Vandy game. I pray this team didn’t quit. 1 more win and then regroup with a month of rest and bowl prep. I just know a Butch or Pruitt team would lose this game we gotta break that cycle.
If these fellas don’t rally around HH and play hard for what he did for the program, then this group wasn’t what we thought they were.. plain and simple. I don’t think that’ll be the case though

No one should get a pass.

But I don’t want to see it’s about the “Jimmy’s and the Joe’s” from anyone then. We should be able to play ball with classes ranked 20th. You guys just argue with fits your opinion. I applaud it too, because I do it daily.

We need better coaching, but we also need better players. Pruitt apparently didn’t hand over McDonald’s bags to DB’s other than Key Lawrence. It is staggering looking at the past 5 classes. Oh, and the next highest DB was Alontae, and guess where he is?

I agree...we need better players and better coaching both.

bad coaching + not very talented players + not very talented players half-assing it = 💩

Being upset about a 20 year old talking trash is the epitome of "old man yells at clouds"
It doesn't have a damn thing to do with being old...it has to do with having a modicum of common f'n sense. Guys like you make pathetic f'n excuses for every idiot out there walking around in this stupid lunatic world.

I get that, but our talent has been lacking in the secondary for at least 2 years now. Each game is different, and it bit us. Last year, we beat UK 45-42.

Just don’t say anymore that we need players. We are playing DB’s ranked 500 and above. Two games out of 12 will be lost each year if that continues.

Players are also getting paid now. They wanted that. I love all of our players, but with that, more expectations come their way. Join the real world.

Some of this stuff can’t be reconciled if fans want it both ways.
We need better players and we need two better coaches.
