A great breaking ball doesn’t hit the plate. A great pitch is one that is whiffed and can be caught by the catcher.
Ok, that’s fine. Here’s my point though: it’s good enough for strike one and two. It’s good enough if there’s a guy on first (unless there’s two outs). Why is not good enough the other times?
If you have to make a bunch of special exceptions to make a rule workable, it might be an indication that the rule doesn’t belong in the first place.
Strike 3 - you’re out. Go to the dugout. It’s fair to all parties and makes perfect sense in the context of the game. If the catcher can’t catch the pitch, the offense can benefit by possibly advancing their runners that didn’t strike out.
