I’m more bothered that the batter gets rewarded for striking out.

If a guy swings and the catcher just decides not to catch it? A guy on base can run because it’s a live ball, but batter can’t? I don’t think you can call it dead for the batter but live for a runner.

It’s such an awkward and counterintuitive rule. A decent amount of the time, the batter either forgets they can run, or doesn’t realize the ball is live.

And personally, I never felt like I belonged on base when I reached on a strikeout.

The point in baseball is to pitch it and catch it. This topic isn’t all that important to dissect, but the rule doesn’t bother me at all.

When the ball get by or dropped by the catcher on strike three, the batter is not out until either tagged or thrown out at first.

The exception is when there are less than two outs and first base is occupied at the time the pitch is made. In that case, the batter is out.

Whether first base is occupied does not matter if the strikeout would be the third out. In that case, the batter would have to be tagged or thrown out at first.

Runners can always advance at their own risk as long as the ball is in play.

If a pitcher throws a great breaking ball, the batter whiffs, and it hits the plate and the catcher blocks on the bounce, everyone has done their job successfully, except the batter. Why does it make sense to require extra steps for the batter to be out?

And the thing is, it’s only situational. If there’s a guy on first, suddenly none of it makes any difference. Except if there’s 2 outs: then it matters again.

Why not just have the batter be out as soon as strike three is recorded? Why all this other nonsense?

Sad update:

Mom developed a fever yesterday and despite treatment she succumbed to acidosis early this morning. We were there with her offering the comfort we could. Today when I get off work she will be buried next to the pasture where her daughter will live out her days and within sight of the pasture her son will live out his.

The two babies are doing well. We are heartbroken but focusing on them and getting them through the next 5 to 10 days and on path to a healthy life is the goal. Going to have a stiff drink or two this evening and get some rest.

A great breaking ball doesn’t hit the plate. A great pitch is one that is whiffed and can be caught by the catcher.
