War in Ukraine

Looks like 75-125. If the crew was 500, that's probably at least 375 killed.

I've been wondering if an Admiral may also have been killed on the Moskva. I know the Captain has been named but you would think your most important ship in a war zone may have a flag officer on board also.

US releases robotic Kraken thingee that goes boom.

Mysterious American robotic ships headed to Ukraine

"...“It’s an unmanned surface vessel (USV) that can be used for a variety of purposes in coastal defense. I think I’ll just leave it at that,” Kirby told reporters.

He said the systems are coming from Navy stocks.

When pressed for more details, Kirby said: “I’m not gonna promise you a fact sheet [but] I can promise you the damn thing works.”

Kirby was later asked if the systems will be armed.

“They’re designed to help Ukraine with its coastal defense needs. And I think I’m just going to leave it at that. I’m not going to get into the specific capabilities,” he said.

Kirby was also asked if the vessels will be coming from Navy prototype programs, when they are expected to arrive in Ukraine waters, and whether they are intended to attack Russian vessels.

“As I can get you more information about actual deliveries, we’ll do that. I’m just not in a position to do that. The authorization just came down yesterday. And we’re working very hard at sourcing these things and getting them on the way to Ukraine as quickly as possible,” he replied.

He continued: “I’m not going to talk about the specific capabilities of these USVs. I’ve talked about them to the degree that we’re going to go.”

A senior defense official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, declined to say more about the system itself, but did note that some Ukrainian personnel have already been trained to use it.

FedScoop sent a list of questions to the Navy to try to learn more about the system, but a service spokesperson said they could not provide any of the information requested.

A spokesperson for the White House’s National Security Council referred FedScoop to the Pentagon."

Imagine if someone in the Navy actually puts two and two together and comes up with decommissioning these mini shops by transferring them the the Ukrainian Farmer's Navy Black Sea Fleet. Apparently the littoral combat ship concept went up in flames when somebody realized the Chinese have missiles and missiles are faster than boats designed to work just offshore. Too bad the military doesn't consider this stuff before building obsolete hardware.

Things are clearly not going according to plan for Ivan but don’t be fooled. If they decide to, there is a lot more that they could drop on Ukraine. They have vast stock of stupid bombs that could flatten Kyiv 10x over and many Tupolev high altitude strategic bombers that can deliver them. So far, they have not been using them in Liu of artillery but that could easily change.

At least the world would learn whether the old Russian bombers are more mission ready and capable than Russian tanks. Bombers with dumb bombs over contested airspace is risky business, though. We found that out the hard way back in Vietnam when Hanoi was littered with a bunch of B-52 carcasses. Now B-52s carry cruise missiles and can perhaps stay out of reach. Unfortunately Ukraine probably has nothing near the air defenses that Hanoi had.

Man let's pray to God Putin isn't insane enough to go nuclear. It just ends horribly for everyone. He has to know this, but if he's losing badly and thinks he'll be deposed (i.e. fall out a window), he might be like, "well, I guess I'll go out swinging".

Lord.

You have to think there are some cooler heads in Russia when it comes to opening Pandora's box. It's hard to see even Putin going there unless he knows irrevocably that his time is up, and at that point others might already have limits on what Putin could do. It's just hard to think that anyone who sees a future (not counting Putin among them) being the one who uses even a tactical nuke as a weapon. As much as Ras thinks the US has become a pariah, our forays into places we didn't belong would be nothing compared to that.

He didn’t love his money and lifestyle enough to not invade Ukraine. That lifestyle you claim he loves he could have had for decades without taking any risk like he has now taken.

Putin had no clue how incompetent his military actually was. You can't suck money out of a system like Putin and his buddies have been doing without consequences, and Putin was too busy being the big little man to pay attention. With joe and dems in business, we're in danger of having similar problems. We have fools thinking the military is a social experiment, defense contractors willing to drain the budget, and military hardware planners who can't seem to figure out what's necessary in the first place. I still believe that our overly complex hardware is our Achilles tendon - it works, but maintenance and the associated logistics are the nightmares in the pudding.

Upside is we finally get this WW3 nuclear war sh!t over with. Then I can finally have an excuse for my collection of "assault weapons", ammo, and flannel shirts.

I certainly believe under the right circumstances that Vlad would risk WWIII. But I also believe a lot of this nuke innuendo is being used to scare Sweden and Finland away from NATO.

Really? He knows that if he detonates one single nuke, the world ends. I'm guessing he doesn't care and his life is over. Maybe his generals will care and choose to not end the world.

I think Putin's bluffing on the nukes, but then I didn't think he'd invade Ukraine either, so ...

The irony is not lost that the Russians supplied those SA-2's or whatever they were at the time. AKA Flying Telephone Poles

I don't believe he will drop one on Europe anymore because the fallout will happen on Russia. They would be nuking themselves.... not that pootin cares about nuking soldiers. He had them dig trenches in radio active soil. Story is some got radiation sickness. I just don't think he wants to radiate Russia with fall out. There are areas he will hit with precision warheads (farther west). Many believe the cruise is the only "smart bomb" he has left. Ukraine can repair it's armory faster than Russia. Russia is reportedly running out of parts. Really, what pootin has left is crumbling away pretty quickly. If he is hell bent with going out with revenge though, he can be a pain in the backside of the US. The Alaskan side mind you. That's if he KNEW he was going out anyway.

With the high level of incompetency we have seen from the Russian military during their "special operation" I wouldn't be surprised if he did drop one on Europe since its apparent the Russian leadership is full of dullard morons.

Well, I wouldn't say all of them, but most of the smart ones have been arrested. ha

I'm telling you there is something else at work in pootin's mind. Some kind of illness. He was traumatized early on and it shaped his life most likely. Now he has an urgency. I have to ask myself if he really isn't sick? We have seen that movie with Kim and his "dark sister of doom" before tho.

That's always the problem when things are directed rather than letting commanders in the field lead. Russian commanders couldn't lead because they weren't allowed and wouldn't lead because they and families would suffer the consequences of failures, do it's probably safe to assume the Russian military still has few decent leaders because of the Soviet years and now Putin. We are falling into the same trap because of the DC power structure and their hands on every little thing.

I thought I read somewhere that the Black Sea fleet commanding admiral has been relieved and arrested.
