2022 NFL Offseason Thread

My guess as to what happened...

Baker hears the Watson trade talks
He feels betrayed and his emotional reaction is to bid farewell
Front office can't believe his antics and decides they need an adult, no matter what happens with Watson

I heard the "Browns want an adult at QB" comment was made before Baker's statement. Personally, I thought Baker was, up until that point, doing and saying the right things. I think he understandably felt betrayed by the comment. Browns front office screwed up IMO letting something like that slip out. QBs in the NFL have become disgruntled over less.

Reality is that Mayfield is an average QB at best, but he's still the best they have atm. Browns should have kept things tight-lipped unless they were sure they had something better as a definite.

He doesn’t really get much say. It’s the franchise’s decision, as they own his contract.
He has a big say as he has a no-trade clause he has to waive. The Texans took offers. Those with acceptable offers got to talk to Watson. Watson gets to choose which one he goes to because of his clause.

? Baker's letter came out a day before Mort reported that.

It's not a betrayal to replace somebody you have overpaid, IMO. Baker is a douche and he doesn't say the right things, actually.

Down to the Saints and the Falcons. He gets to choose where he goes because it involves waiving his no-trade clause. JMO, but the Saints seem like a better option simply because they appear to have more on offense. If I'm Watson, that'd be a big consideration for me. Especially with Falcons' WR Calvin Ridley facing trouble for gambling.

He's locked into a long contract and I don't think Saints are a better situation but he should probably just go with the place he wants to live

Saints are facing cap issues is my understanding, but they also currently have more offensive weapons. They have AK and they have better WRs. Falcons have Pittman, the TE. Ridley won't be playing this year. And whichever team gets Watson will be giving up their next few first round draft picks, and probably more later round picks.

Was Mort the first to report it? I read the comment somewhere and it wasn't until a day later I read about Mayfield's letter. I assumed the letter was a response to the comment since that's the order I learned about each.

As far as I know.

Heard some speculation on the way to work that the delay in Watson picking a team may be due to his agent trying to leverage his recent popularity into a new contract.

damnit mfer.

The afc is so stupid good. Might as well give tom brady the sb trophy rn

Wonder what the Browns will get for Baker Mayfield? If I were a GM, I don't think I'd give a first-round pick for him.

Also, lol about wanting an "adult". I'm no Mayfield fan, but at least he doesn't have 22 women claiming he sexually harassed/assaulted them.

Nothing promotes trade value like calling the player a child.
