We say this way too often.
Doing great, just need to show them we are good - 7 wins, 8 wins and we will sign them all
And then we don't.
First time I'VE ever said it.
Key phrase: "Then we don't"
You are right, we dont...we don't follow up a successful/winning season with a progressive/successful/winning season...therefore, recruiting doesn't take a step forward.
Context!
Last time we had back to back winning seasons? Answer: six years ago...these recruits were 11,12 years old. Also, to expand on that, the second of Butch's 9 win teams was actually a MASSIVE step back...a team that should have won the East, but instead, didnt...ended by losing to Vandy, and going 4-4 in SEC play, compared to 5-3 the year before. Take a step back, recruiting doesn't take a step forward.
Inside the numbers: Butch's '14 class was 7th in the country; he sold the vision, coming off 5-7. Then he went 7-6, won a bowl (firsts in a long time), '15 class jumped to 4th in the country. Progress on the field, big step forward in recruiting. Then he went 9-4 in '15, and signed the 14th class...first 25 cap year, if I remember correctly. No, not another step forward in recruiting as we hoped, coming off a big step forward on the field; but, as I said, first year of 25 cap...and, also, players were probably catching on to Butch being a used car salesman(something Heupel is not!). Then Butch went 9-4 again in '16, with a team that was as talented as any we have had in a loooong time. We should've won the East, yet we went 4-4 in the SEC, after going 5-3 the year before. Recruits noticed the step back, therefore the 17th rated class in the country.
With Pruitt...well, I shouldn't even have to explain anything there.
We win 8+ this year, another step forward on the field = recruiting...step forward. Everything has to be looked at within context, with perspective...dig in, look deeper into things, and why they may or may not be.
You may be right...we may win 8+ this year (meaning we are progressing very nicely on the field and as a program), and sign no better class than we did this year...but, I highly doubt it.
