Riley to USC…the inevitable Josh Heupel to OU freak out thread

I guess you have never been in a position like these coaches. It’s a small community…..

There is nothing to suggest that Tennessee would basically double Heupel’s salary to keep him.

And 2-4 years is a long time. Walking into an playoff contender while getting double the pay next season sure beats maybe at best winning 8-9 games at Tennessee while fighting to recruit. Especially considering OU and Texas are a few seasons away from joining the league.

Tennessee is multiple seasons away from sniffing anything OU can do in one year in regards to 10+ wins or playoff contention.

You’re assuming no players at OU elect to follow Riley. OU & Texas will be in SEC by ‘23.

Comparing Nebraska to OU is dumb. They fired 9-4 Pelini and have been in the desert ever since. OU is literally about to have a 3rd coach in what, 20 years and it ain’t because of firings or losing records.
Should I have used Johnny Majors?
I think CJH is a fantastic coach but it’ll be difficult for him to ever go undefeated which is what must happen at Oklahoma for them to reach the playoffs.
Spurrier was smart enough finally to get a quality DC and leave him alone to win a NC

Exactly. Plus Nebraska didn't do themselves any favors joining the Big 10 other than revenue sharing.

I’m assuming nothing. As of now, OU has a pipeline and infrastructure right now for recruiting that brings in top classes. No hard to keep that going since Riley and Heupel are both offensive guys. In regards to the SEC transition, Heupel has a taste of what’s needed to recruit. So that’s a better asset for him if they look his way.

Sankey has said 2025 at best. Guess we will see.

If he leaves, he’s not the man we think he is?? Come on, man. No one wants him to go, but questioning his character because he takes what most would argue is a better job is amateurish.
I'd argue that Norman is not a better option to Knoxville long term. I understand short term with the sanctions but long term UT will give Heup a much longer leash and we offer a better stadium, facilities, and bigger fanbase. Not to mention Okie is in for a rude awaking when they land in the SEC. Long term Heup is much better off staying and building here. JMO

Sankey HAS to say that now cause that’s what the contracts say. Most people in Texas & Okla admit both will pay to get out ASAP. They’re haggling on the price now.

I agree except for the fanbase part but mainly because OU is winning and popular right now.

1. Everyone cheats.

2. USC has not had a quality coach since. Sarkisian might have worked out if he didn't have the drinking issues, but we'll never know. Lane was a dud out there.

3. They still pull elite classes despite not being in CFP contention.
Well Lane had to deal with the recruiting restrictions from Carrolls regime. I think at one point could only give 15 scholarships a year. You only sign that many and every class has misses no matter who the coach is and you are up creek.

I hate to say this but I would not be surprised if a Press Conference isn't called in the next couple of days. I hope not but! I would think if they pay out the buyout and bump his salary 2 million he would go.it would be hard to keep him. Who would coach the team or would we even go. I would say UT would have to double his salary to keep him. I am talking 8 million and THE DC would need a big bump to stay.. With the coach leaving OK does not pay a buyout and i bet LR has to pay them something.

Their fan base would implode if they hired Heupel. They made him out to be incompetent when they fired him and now you want to hire him?

You think he would go back to the man that threw him under the bus and fired him to save his own brother's rear end?

OU boosters don’t like Heupel. OU fans don’t want another offense or minded HC. Heupel isn’t going to OU.
