It’s a passing game nowadays. No matter how good a defense plays today they can be exposed by the proficiency of today’s offenses. Look at what Alabama did to Georgia and we know they have the best or one of the best defenses in the country. If IUs defense was better they win hands down. Especially with how good Penix played. Do you not agree?
Around here the mantra is the only reason our defense is bad is because of JG. So basically the only thing that matters is QB.
IU couldn’t run the ball at all and Ohio St has way more talent and depth. Yes they gave up a lot of points but 7 of those points came on a pick 6 and the D did stop Ohio St there at the end to give the offense a shot. Ohio St might have the best offense in the country so no shame with how IU’s D played. Their D line was impressive. Not hands down. They sacked Fields 5 times and intercepted him thrice. Didn’t exactly lay down.
Another good post. Some of you all are giving BigOrangeTrain a few good teaching lessons today. Maybe he will wise up and see how his opinions are from another galaxy. The defense isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible, either.
The offense on the other hand, is just plain awful, and Guaranturnover is the main culprit.
Let’s look at some numbers:
Georgia. Offense scored only 14 points, while the defense scored 7. And, even despite a complete meltdown by the QB, the defense had us in that game into the fourth quarter. Just one score by the offense in the second half would have made that anybody’s ballgame down the stretch. But, in what is a recurring theme, the offense did NOTHING in the second half but give Georgia multiple short fields.
Kentucky. Offense scored only 7 points, but the QB did throw 2 TDs...alas, to the other team. Despite the offenses complete ineptitude, the defense only gave up 20 points. That is a winnable effort with any kind of offense. Offense again shut out in second half.
Both units got beat up by Alabama.
Arkansas. Offense scored only 13 points, and again, shut out in the second half. Defense gave up 24 points. And while the third quarter wasn’t good, you should still win games where you give up 24 points or less.
But, the Arkansas game showed why bad offense hurts the defense. You cannot continue to go three-and-out on offense without it eventually wearing down your defense. And that is as big a reason for 2-3 of our losses as anything. The defense has held up well enough for this team to be at least 4-2 and possibly 5-1. The offense has not helped, and in some cases hurt big time.
We 4th in the SEC in sacks and we have allowed the fewest TD passes in the SEC. Its the Qb's fualt if he spots the opponent 17 points or decides to continue turn the ball over near his own 20. We have an avg SEC defense, not elite or horrible. We have one of the worse offenses in the entire country.Does offense effect the defenses ability to stop slants? Tackle? Defend the middle of the field? How about our DBs ability to defend passes? How about our inability to generate a pass rush? Is that all the QBs fault?
