Coronavirus (No politics)

According to Dr. Oz, that one act alone, hygiene, can possibly reduce the probability of catching Corona by 50%. So, it would not be irresponsible to tell people to do those things. But, depending on age and health, I've also read where a person could have had it and not even know it. If this is true, then would it not be reasonable to assume it is less dangerous than influenza? 22,000 flu deaths only gets mere mentions in brief reports. Why isn't there mass hysteria over that? Any virus will affect elderly and those already with afflictions more than others. Is it because this is new, and influenza is seasonal and were used to it now so we don't think twice about the mortality rate of it verses covid-19? Has Covid-19 even reached the amount of deaths world wide yet that the flu has so far in the US alone?? That is why I question the fear mongering. Not contesting being smart about your daily business, but why didn't we shut down everything to curb the flu? There is also responsible reporting when it comes to dealing with something that is unkown.
I don’t want to pile on here but I would not consider Dr. Oz a consistently reliable source of information. Washing hands should be encouraged, however, there is no data to support that this infection’s transmission is cut by precisely 50% as a result. In addition, it’s unfortunately not all that reassuring to know that some people are asymptomatic with this virus. Individually, I would much rather be diagnosed with Covid 19 than Ebola (and influenza rather than either of the other two for that matter). However, on a population scale it is much more difficult to spread Ebola because it is so deadly that those who get it are often afflicted with severe symptoms and unable to spread the disease as a result. The most concerning infections on a population scale are moderately virulent.

The flu should be taken more seriously by the general population mainly through vaccination prevention but that does not minimize the potential impact of Covid-19.

To reinforce what has been said previously, there are ways to save people’s lives and change how many people die. If you run out of ICU beds you can’t just build more and then more people will die as a result. Forget about the mortality rate and the number of confirmed cases when trying to do the back of the napkin math. Both the number of confirmed cases and the mortality rate underestimate the potential burden of this disease. (The confirmed cases number because testing has been severely inadequate to determine actual disease spread in our country). 80% of cases are mild but 20% are considered severe which would optimally require a higher level of care. Without stopping rapid spread this care will be impossible. 15% of cases likely will require hospitalization and 5% will require critical care. Critical care is going to be one of our scarecest resources including ICU beds and ventilators. Italy is even worse than the numbers I mentioned above (10% critical care) which were from China in case you think China is lying.

I am posting this because I think it matters for people to know that it is real. Not just to scare people but to shake people out of complacency where we can unify and save some lives as a result. Panic is unhelpful but so is doing nothing. Our decisions now will feel empty initially because we will never get to know that we directly benefitted someone else. But they will matter nonetheless. Don’t be afraid to make a difference to help your community.

I believe Americans possess the ability to discern information in a logical way and ultimately care for each other.

Update: Both the wife and I called our PCP. Both said we probably have it but there are no tests and nothing they can do, so self quarantine and go to the emergency room if we get worse.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

Update 2: My dr's office called me back and offered to allow me to come in and rule out anything it could be but did reiterate they could not test me for covid-19 since those tests are being rationed to critical patients in the hospital. I told them I was not in bad shape and if they were overwhelmed to give my spot to someone else. She told me they were not overwhelm and that the hospitals had asked them to start ruling out anything it could be before sending people to the hospital. Anyways I go in for flu/pneumonia tests tomorrow afternoon. Lets hope I get to come back and laugh about how it has been the flu/cold the whole time.

Because doctors can test for and know how to treat the flu. It appears testing for Covid-19 has not been done from the beginning.

Also, the flu has a vaccine. Someone pointed out that a vaccine is not a cure. Of course, it isn't. However, the vaccine is a tool that greatly impacts the mortality rate for the flu. If you just look up the data, a vast majority (75%+) of pediatric flu deaths every year are from unvaccinated kids. Some years it is 80-90%. I don't know about the adult numbers, but it's why they encourage you to get the vaccine. The last numbers I saw this year were that a minimum of 20 million in the U.S. have had the flu (and that's probably gone up). The mortality rate is fairly low with the common flu.

I can't speak for everyone. But, I've only had flu vaccine once in my life. Sickest winter I ever had. Never took it again. Hadn't had flu in over 20 years. Not all are that lucky, so it's an individual choice. Our kids should be different till they are legally not our responsibility. Parents should not skip any of their vaccines, although a few are hotly debated.

This virus scare is another hoax to simply erode our freedoms and liberties. Just look at California right now.
Newsom issues order allowing California to take over hotels for coronavirus patients

Over 61,000 died in the U.S. in 2017. Not a word.

So every single person is on in this hoax except you? WH just issued new guidelines saying don’t gather in groups of 10 or more and called on governors to close schools/businesses where there is evidence of community transmission.

That makes both “sides” in on it. Quite the production for this hoax.

Each person is different, and each person lives in a different environment. Depends on age, family, job, location, urban v. rural, etc. I don't know how old you are, but people roughly 20 years old to probably 50-60 years old can normally fight off the flu just fine. Our kids and our older adults, however, need the flu vaccine. 5 of the 6 members of my family got the flu this year, and we all got the vaccine. However, it also mitigates it if you get the flu.

54 now. And still pretty resilient to most things. Occasionally catch a cold. Sometimes have symptoms of something but never completely come down with something. The one period in my life that I did catch flu or something somewhat regular was in the college dorms. But, that was an anomaly that subsided when I graduated. I am keen to get bronchitis passed down from my mom. And I did smoke for about 10 years but quit over 20 years ago. The more distance between me and that and the bronchitis has subsided. Would get in fall and spring like clock work. Haven't had that full blown in maybe 3 years. Was just blessed with a good immune system. Nagging cough right now going on 4-6 months. Comes and goes. When wife got sick back to back weeks, I got worse. Prob a touch of what she had, but was gone in a few days and cough and congestion went with it about 95%. I work part time at a bowling alley so prob get exposed to quite a bit. I must admit I don't wash hands and sanitize non-stop like I should while there and still don't get sick. But, I've ramped up my efforts to remember to do so in the past week or so. So, I count myself blessed in those regards. No allergies either. There are a lot than can relate to my resilience, and a lot that can't. Now, my wife can catch sickness from a flea at 100 paces, or a person in a car going down the road.

My wife is a teachers aid with Pre-K. And the kids love her and fight over sitting in her lap and hanging on her. So she got sick one week. Was out. went back and got sick again right off. First time was Tamiflu. Second time was some other fairly new pill. Just one. I think it worked better. But IIRC, she wasn't told she had flu on one of those. Just symptoms. With that being before they knew to test for this virus, it makes you wonder if the virus hasn't already been here and been running its course.

If the virus has been here the whole time, then this is just all mass hysteria because flu related deaths has been about average. We have to assume that isn’t the case.

She is of the age demographic and general health that would have put her at very low risk of death from the virus. Flu or Covid.

Do you trust that the Chinese government dutifully self-reported this is a timely fashion? If not, then there is a very real possibility this has already been out. And it apparently wasn't from eating bats. It was from a test lab in that city.

Gotta chuckle at folks leaving the good stuff to help clear congestion still in the produce section...garlic and onions.

Besides the fact that French onion soup done right is scrumptious.
Half that section is for onions and garlic actually. They've moved everything down into the baskets because thier stock is so low.
