Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Lots of things cause people to die when they didn't have to. Unfortunately, that's part of life. You can't stop death, and if you live in fear of it, you miss out on a lot of living.

All true, but if keeping my short, fat a** mostly at home for the next few weeks (which makes sense) helps to keep even one person from contracting the thing I'm willing to do that. Fear? Hardly. But, I get it..... You're not willing to make ANY sacrifices, reasonable or not. That's your prerogative, I guess. I just wish I had as much surety in my knowledge of epidemiology and other related matters as you.

I have family that are smack-dab in the middle of the age "danger zone".... some with other underlying medical conditions that could mean very bad news if they contract it. And I'll bet I'm not in the minority. That makes me wonder why anyone is willing to risk it at all. AND makes me wonder about what kind of person would willingly ignore those risks because...... they simply don't want to? Because people are going to die anyway? Those don't strike me as particularly good reasons to put someone else's life in danger.

But, then, I guess I'm just a p***y.

I agree he should say that , I also think we depend way too heavily on government to fix every single little thing for us . I see the pros of our government doing what they can to stop the spread I also see a huge downside and almost always ends up costing the American people some right or liberty for “ safety’s sake “ . It’s the easiest way government gains more power , through a national emergency.

So I guess that part of the Constitution that instructs the Legislative Branch to “provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States.” (that's Article 1, Section 8 in case you want to check it out) is just fulla s**t, huh......

I actually don't have a single problem with that. Unfortunately, there ARE people that will start "...acting like teenagers and flipping out over things you can’t control ."

SOMEONE (gee, maybe the President of our country for instance?) should stand up and say "Look people!! Knock it off! This isn't good, but it isn't something out of a Stephen King book, either. Here's what's happening. Here's what we're going to do about it." NOT "It's all under control" when it very obviously ISN"T. When you think you're being lied to you make up your own reasons for WHY you're being lied to. Did you like it when your parents told you "Because I said so"?

Mobs are only as smart as their least-intelligent person.
They aren’t being lied to. It’s under control and again not that big a deal

Yeah, thing is, I never heard a word about TP hoarding before I witnessed it. I usually have news going as background noise, but really nothing about the TP.

It'd be interesting to see the chain of events that got it started... could have been a store rearranging their layout, and people couldn't find the TP, and dominoes started falling. But it's bizarre.
I heard about it Friday from a customer of mine. Wouldn't you know it I got a text from my wife that same day telling me we were almost out and to stop on my way home and get some. I go to the store not sure what to expect and it was surreal. A few packages left on the shelf. I grabbed a couple of 4 packs for the family and looked through some other isles, everything else liked fine but the TP isle was barren. I don't get it either.

lmao I'm an immunosuppressed liver transplant patient with a history of kidney and heart problems, diabetes, and, oh yeah, my mobility is limited because I broke my damn back when I fell while recovering from my transplant. I'm one of those high risk "danger zone" people you're talking about. And if I catch this disease, my outlook is bleak, but I'm not going to be looking to place blame. **** happens in life.

Have you taken those same precautions with every strain of flu? Because they can be deadly as well. I mean why risk it? Just how cavalier are you willing to be?

You can carry on with life and be vigilant and minimize your risk and risk to others. There is nothing any president could do to prevent an outbreak like this save effectively shutting down the nation which I could argue very easily would almost certainly have caused/contributed to the deaths of far more people than this virus.

You can criticize some of Trump's rhetoric on the virus this far but his actions/reactions have been on point to varying degrees. I guess I just don't understand what you expect from leadership in this situation.

Gee, I don't know..... Maybe listen to the folks that know more about things like this than he does? Accept that what they tell you is true and not some paranoid scheme to prevent his re-election?

Hell's bells, the man could have all but GUARANTEED his re-election by handling this better. He's gonna get eaten alive over this in the debates.......

LOL have you read what the CDC and other experts are instructing the public? They aren't the ones inciting the fear. It is common sense stuff they're saying. You can go about your life and minimize your risk and risk to others using common sense. No need to sequester yourself unless you are ill.

As far as Trump and his response it isn't the disaster the media is stoking. But never let a natural disaster go to waste, and certainly ignore relevant facts while stoking the flames. The right did it during the Obama presidency and the left is now. But considering the very slow response during Obama's presidency a better case could be made criticism was warranted then.

Yeah.... Unfortunately, "if it bleeds, it leads" is still what drives the news.

But.... So far the numbers seem to be pointing toward something that's more serious than the flu with nothing to do to keep it in check but to limit exposure. Once there's a vaccine thing's will change. Until the anti-vaxxers get going with IT.......

I just don't seem to have it in me to say "la-di-da let's just sit around and do nothing, spread the crap (I"M young, I'LL be fine)" while people die that didn't have to. I'm at least willing to make a few reasonable sacrifices......
A vaccine for an rna + retrovirus? It replicates itself into your dna and changes the cell makeup. That's gonna be difficult.
I have no doubt that soon it will be like any other virus like varicella. Sitting around in your system waiting for the immune system to weaken so it can express itself and spread.
Quarentine for 2 weeks to what end? It'll make rounds again and again in waves. Viruses have a nasty way of finding a way no matter what hosts do. I wouldn't doubt this one has developed a fairly sturdy envelope to exist on surfaces for 9 days.

The non medical crowd Facebook experts have a lot of talk but little knowledge. You are correct

The needle looked no different than the steroid shot. Nurse warned me it was going to hurt and to get my weight off that leg. Lol

They Tore Out My Heart and Stomped That Sucker Flat by Lewis Grizzard should be required reading. He discusses medical terms like "this is going to sting a bit" and "you'll feel a little pressure" and what they really mean. Now one thing you don't want to do is read his thoughts on open heart surgery while you are recovering from your own - it hurts way too much when you laugh. All his books are great reads.

I take every reasonable precaution I can. I don't dig a hole, crawl in it and pull it in after me every time someone sneezes. I get my vaccination. I don't listen to anti-vaxxer idiocy. If I, myself, am sick I stay home whenever physically possible.

What I DON'T do is run around licking shopping cart handles. I don't hoard TP (idiots, why??). I don't run to work and cough on people and then laugh about it and call 'em p*****s for getting annoyed about it. I certainly DON'T encourage people to ignore their doctors, nurses, CDC, epidemiologists, or any other health care professional because of a tush-hog attitude. By god I AIN'T SKEERED!!! And iff'n you is you's just a big ol' baby."

That last one is the one that really p***** me off. I don't think I've ever seen anything near the consensus among health care profs. that we're seeing right now but people that couldn't add two and two and get four consistently (with a calculator) will tell them they're "just fear mongering". Personally, I think it's rooted in a deep seated jealousy and resentment of anyone that might know more about something than they do. No matter how much time and effort the professionals took in learning those things. I think it all goes back to when mommy and daddy told them that their opinions were just as good as anyone else's, especially those nasty ol' doctors even if baby-dear only barely made it out of high school by the skin of baby-dear's teeth.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Limiting exposure is the ONLY weapon we've got against this thing right now. Only a completely ignorant fool would ignore that fact. It's not rocket surgery FFS......

I'm not seeing anyone here with the mentality you are decrying. I think you're arguing with yourself.

Then, please, by all means..... If you can't see the reasoning behind limiting your own exposure, have at it! When you catch it and die, by god, you'll have shown ME won't you??
