Maurer’s Instagram Post

It's a fair argument and the points were huge at the time. Sometimes coaches have a play that gets you put squarely on the bench, BMs last pass broke the cardinal rule of QBs in that you don't throw across your body off your back leg back over the middle, something he's done before and I'm guessing it's why Pruitt went back to JG. Pruitt also said last night that JG was who he wanted in there with the game on the line. He was trying to get a spark with BM an luckily it lit a spark in JG.

I agree the across the body back to the middle of the field is the cardinal rule that shouldn’t be broken and deserved him a spot back on the bench.

Thanks for the good discussion today, at the end of the day I think we all want the same thing.

Why the F are we worried about it? No one at QB set the world on fire this season. If Maurer transfers its bc he doesn't believe he can win the job. If he doesnt believe he can win the job here, well then he's probably not a starting QB at a power 5 program.

Wonder what Fields at Ohio St. would say about that, or Burrows at Lsu. Neither were given a chance where they transferred from. Lots of good coaches appear to not be very good at evaluating qb talent. Trask at Fla. only playing because of injury. You can't expect any qb to be thrown in a game with just limited preparation time for the game and expect them to do well. No qb on ut roster were given a real chance to succeed except jg. Maurer comes in last night, led the team to a fg, on his only series and gets pulled.

Look, I’m not saying JG is great but Maurer is not a panacea. He is seriously flawed and as a coach scares the h*** out of me. I still contend that Shrout is the most physically talented qb on the roster but JG is the overall best shot at winning. Maybe next fall that will change.
I'm with you on JT Shrout. He has all the intangibles and the best pure passer. Not sure what his problems are at this point. These QB's need to go to some camps ASAP.

Maurer got the start and first reps earlier in the year until he got knocked out. He didn’t show out then either. You can tell the game still hasn’t slowed down for him yet. JG isn’t the answer but the best of bad choices. Better o-line recruitment and play will allow better QB development in the future.

Our ol is doing fine

Went back and watched just for you.
1. Hasellbeck never said IU was in prevent.
2. Last 7 minutes: All man cover 2. 1 safety blitz, 1 goal line, 1 corner blitz, 0 prevent.

Your right. Many dont have clue. Guess that includes the announcers too...hmmm

I'm not sure that Hasselbeck said they went into prevent. He just said that they weren't bringing the same pressure and dropped more. I'm not a football expert, but I believe prevent is a specific defense.

I agree and most forget after the hit he took at the end of the Georgia game he passed out on the sideline. That hit coupled with the others has to have him gun shy.

To me it just doesn‘t make sense for him to transfer now. I think he goes through spring practice to see where he stands with Bailey and then makes his decision.

It makes a lot of sense for him to transfer, he has not and will not be given a fair chance to start as long as jg is here. He will have two years to play somewhere else if he transfers now. I mean like last night he comes in and we move the ball and get a fg. and no turnovers. What would his chance have been, go in a score a td and we keep you in the game? Jg wasn't doing anything in the red zone for 2 and half qtrs. and 2 int. and Maurer gets pulled cause he almost threw an int.

I could care less who qb is as long as they can lead and win. Credit JG for coming back strong in the end, but he has to improve as well going into next year. JG has some bad throws and habits too that can get you beat and he has to get more consistent. BM did generate points on his lone drive, and that is twice that he has been used in that role and produced points and came back out. I trust Pruitt, he took him out and while he didn't do anything the next drive he did the last 2. I think looking back Pruitt has done a good job of dealing with our qb troubles this year. He got Shrout and Maurer some needed experience and it actually helped JG coming off the bench more than it hurt him. But next year I expect all of them to improve, the competition should be fun to watch. GBO!

The prevent defense is a defensive alignment in American football that seeks to prevent the offense from completing a long pass or scoring a touchdown in a single play and seeks to run out the clock.

The prevent defense uses five or more defensive backs.

The had 5 DBs. And only rushed 3 or 4 and immediately went deep so as not to give up the long pass...hmmm the very definition of prevent

The people screaming for BM are ball watching don’t notice things like UGA’s initial defense against him. They clearly were much more concerned with BM running than they were with his throwing. He surprised them, they adjusted, and he struggled. Faced different defenses once teams respected his arm.

And thats what you want in a qb. for the opposing team to respect his arm talent, it opens up your running game more.

I'm sorry. There is no twist with numbers.

I didn't offer an opinion....I posted stats directly from the UT Sports page.

I'm sorry the data doesn't fit your narrative....but that doesn't alter reality

No narrative. You just can't compare stats on 75 attempts verses over 250 attempts. What you can say is that as a true freshman, not great stats, not horrible stats. As a RSJ, not good stats. But, you can't compare one against the other until the numbers are closer together. I would yield if BM was up over 150 attempts and showing more of a trend.

Nice Wiki info. I conceded that I am not a football coach. I just stated that Hasselbeck never stated they were in prevent. They used some blitzing at the end of the first series that we scored a TD.

Almost 2 int is different then 2 ints
Considering it was Indiana and both hit them right in the hands, those are INT's against SEC teams, easily. Maurer is a fine backup, but if you want to reach the level of Bama/UGA/LSU in this league, you need Harrison Bailey type talent.

Even if he transfers after spring practice he would still have 3 years of eligibility left right?? He would be forced to red shirt next fall which would make him a red shirt sophomore in 2021. He really has nothing to lose and everything to gain by going through spring practice here to see if he has a shot at winning the job.

Yes after we hit the short hot route several times JC scripted that and JG executed...but once they stopped, so did the passing game....sorry for the wiki. I figured going into the differences in coverage was overkill...not being a jerk at all

I don't overlook any of that but every single thing you mentioned had zero effect on the overall outcome of the football game.

True. A missed field goal that should have been buttered bread for the lead with barely two minutes left took care of the outcome of that game. Barring a kick return TD, that field goal, made, would have ended that game.

Were they ints???

All Maurer needs is game preparation and game expierence. But I don't think he will ever get it at ut. If given the chance he will be great somewhere.
I watched him go through his Hs career in this EXACT fashion. He wasn’t great his sophomore year but the flashes were consistent. His coach seen the same thing and stuck with him through it. Never even mentioned benching him at any point. Brian fought for him because he SHOWED the same commitment to him that Brian showed for his team no matter how bad they were. HB had that same kind of commitment from his coach as well. The point is you won’t find a qb at any level that ever excelled without support. If UT ever wants another Manning or Dobbs it won’t happen with this kind of mismanagement of the position. At some point Pruitt needs to give his commitment to someone (other than JG) and ALLOW him to grow. Maurer is a more accurate version of Dobbs. Bailey could be the next Manning if he has the IQ. But without support no one will ever know if those comparisons hold true due to Pruitts commitment being in the wrong basket and forcing future potential to consider themselves before the team.
