Not at all. Just don’t think anyone has really watched him play but feel comfortable making definitive statements based on really nothing. That is unless you and Bigun got together to watch Maryland football the last couple of yearsHe was a 4 star some 3 or 4 years ago, he's injury prone and played like a 3 star the last few years. Are you saying just because he was rated a 4 star he should be good? I don't think he has any skill sets that are better than what we have and that's probably why he's just a walkon and doesn't have a scholarship at Tennessee.
Very good take. The other issue certain posters in this site forget is the number of different coaches and coordinators involved. This is the very first time in the four years JG has been here that he has had at least the same OC. He has yet to have the same position coach. Whether some believe it or not, that does make it very hard to develop as a player.A lot on here confuse potential with current ability. Just throwing somebody in the fire when they’re not ready because they have a “higher ceiling” is generally a bad policy. I believe it is main cause of JG’s current struggles.
Tua didn’t take over fo Hurts because he had more potential, he was better at that time. Same for Lawerence at Clemson.
I predict that he will not be given another shot at a power5 school and if he does it'll be 2-3 years down the road. Folks on here act like he's talented enough to play anywhere when in reality he's the same thing today as he was this time last year, a project who might turn into a serviceable QB. He's nowhere near as productive as Will Grier was at Florida and his best transfer destination was to W Va. I don't think there will be much interest for Maurer from any bigtime programs considering his current pros and cons. How can you say the Bama game wasn’t a good start. After the pick he led us on two scoring drives and had us in a 21-13 game against at that point the number one team in the country.
He was a true freshman and INT’s and mistakes are going to happen with him. If he enters the transfer portal he will be given a shot a another power 5 school. Can the same be said for JG?
Him NOT being awarded a scholarship tells me all I need to know. How many walkons did we play this year? Do you really think we are going to play a walkon at the most important position on the field? Not at all. Not to mention that he was being coached by terrible 1st year OCs for 2 of those seasons. Most of the neverJG crowd can even name the OCs he's played for.Very good take. Very true. I made the point earlier in the season that JG was learning a new and radically different system. CJC’s system puts much more responsibility on the players to make decisions.Very good take. I agree with all but the Maurer chances and I think the jury is still out on him. He has a big arm and can run which will make him attractive to the RPO offenses. He was forced to play because of JG’s poor play and probably wasn‘t ready for the defenses he faced.I predict that he will not be given another shot at a power5 school and if he does it'll be 2-3 years down the road. I agree very much so. I have been anti-anti JG for the past 2 years. People tend to take that as me thinking he is a great QB.I do not think that. I think he is a lot better than people give him credit for and the best on our roster right now. I think however that that could easily change in the next few months. I think all our QB's will be better next year. JG is closer to his ceiling than the other guys for obvious reasons so its very possible they catch up or surpass him but he has the experience and that counts for a lot. None of these other guys have shown transcendent talent and he is no scrub. This is spot on. Sadly it’s long and most wont read it. They will just say JG sucks and Maurer is the savior.
JG earned being benched. Then he earned his starting role back.
Oh please! Thought this was a Maurer thread, but somebody has to tell us why JG will be “better “ next year for sure.Very true. I made the point earlier in the season that JG was learning a new and radically different system. CJC’s system puts much more responsibility on the players to make decisions.
Most fans think he simple calling the plays and the players run them. His multiple offense requires the qb to make pre and post snap reads and the play changes according to those reads.

I said nothing of the sort. We were just discussing some of the underlying issues that most fans don’t consider. I like objective and informed analysis and discussion. Not pick a qb and die on that hill that most y’all do.Oh please! Thought this was a Maurer thread, but somebody has to tell us why JG will be “better “ next year for sure.
Several times now Maurer has thrown off his back leg across his body to a covered receiver back over the middle, the absolute biggest mistake a QB can make and he's not shown any improvement in that area. He's a project QB because of his unrefined talent and a team is going to have to invest a lot in him to make him a starter. Coaches will be willing to invest more in him when he matures as a Jr or Sr but right now it's difficult to see wins with him behind center, whether it be for Tn or someone else.I agree with all but the Maurer chances and I think the jury is still out on him. He has a big arm and can run which will make him attractive to the RPO offenses. He was forced to play because of JG’s poor play and probably wasn‘t ready for the defenses he faced.
My biggest issue with some is they want to compare stats and that is apples to oranges. You are comparing a 4th year player to 1st year player and while JG has had different position coaches each season that didn’t excuse the freshman like mistakes he made. My hope is that someone steps up in the spring, whoever that may be, and wins the job and these debates are finally behind us.
Spot on!! You should have ended it with a go suck on a big orange if you're a neverJG guy!!I actually see it as the opposite. They have given Maurer plenty of chances. I think people like subconsciously ignore that because it does not match their agenda. Last night Maurer came in the game and threw 3 passes. Every single one hit the hands of a receiver but 2 were drops. The good news is 2 were drops because the hands they hit were Indiana DB's. SO, of course, JG was quickly put back in and he went to on rally us back.
Maurer unquestionably has better arm talent than JG. He is also a better runner. But JG makes fewer mistakes He threw 2 picks last night but he also only threw 6 all season. I feel like every mistake JG makes gets amplified and blown out of proportion. Did he play a good game yesterday? nope. Could he have avoided those picks sure but let us be real its not like the dude makes a ton of mistakes. He is a game manager and he is consistent (comparatively) he puts the team in good positions most of the time. Have there been some times he made the wrong choice sure...it happens to every QB but if you really look hard at it he does not do it a lot people just never miss a chance to notice when he does.
People jump all over him about the choice during the Bama game, as if it cost us the game. No one in their right mind believes we beat Bama whether he makes that TD or not. We are not that team yet. We are a good year away from one play determining the difference between a Bama/UT game. He was trying too hard which is very unlike him because the pressure was on. Its been spoken on many times by teammates and coaches he puts too much on his shoulders sometimes and takes things to heart to much. The kids a ride or die VFL and people are not appreciating the effort the guy puts forth. He is trying his best every second he's on that field. Not even the biggest JG hater will argue that.
So here is my question why do we hate on players like this? I could see if he was a Diva, a troublemaker, slacking off. But its not true. Dude is out there putting it all on the line and has proven he is the best QB at this moment on the roster. I think until someone proves they are better we should be behind him 100%. Maurer or Shrout or Bailey can and might beat him out this spring and if they do thats good But if they don't it means they are not yet ready.
I'm just saying guys lets support our players who are doing things right? The guys that maybe they aren't playing as well as you'd like but they show up and work hard and stay out of trouble. All I can ask is these kids do their best and it sickens me when someone is knocking a kid doing the right things.
You can't coach up a QB who is too slow to analyze plays. The correct plays were called, but JG failed to execute. Stop with the coach blaming. He's got too much potential to sit behind JG another year with Harrison Bailey coming in as well.
Especially with a staff ,that at the moment, is not very adept at developing QBs.
Baker Mayfield was a walk on. You do realize the only reason he’s a walk on is due to his injury concerns, correct? He will get a chance to compete with other guys that haven’t exactly set the world on fire and a true freshman who may be better than all of them. Proclaiming a disaster before he takes a snap or makes a throw is ridiculous.Him NOT being awarded a scholarship tells me all I need to know. How many walkons did we play this year? Do you really think we are going to play a walkon at the most important position on the field?
And also because Oklahoma was stacked and if he wanted to play for them, he was forced to walk on.Baker Mayfield was a walk on. Those underlying issues have been discussed a thousand times in every QB thread on here for the last 3 yearsI said nothing of the sort.
