I actually see it as the opposite. They have given Maurer plenty of chances. I think people like subconsciously ignore that because it does not match their agenda. Last night Maurer came in the game and threw 3 passes. Every single one hit the hands of a receiver but 2 were drops. The good news is 2 were drops because the hands they hit were Indiana DB's. SO, of course, JG was quickly put back in and he went to on rally us back.
Maurer unquestionably has better arm talent than JG. He is also a better runner. But JG makes fewer mistakes He threw 2 picks last night but he also only threw 6 all season. I feel like every mistake JG makes gets amplified and blown out of proportion. Did he play a good game yesterday? nope. Could he have avoided those picks sure but let us be real its not like the dude makes a ton of mistakes. He is a game manager and he is consistent (comparatively) he puts the team in good positions most of the time. Have there been some times he made the wrong choice sure...it happens to every QB but if you really look hard at it he does not do it a lot people just never miss a chance to notice when he does.
People jump all over him about the choice during the Bama game, as if it cost us the game. No one in their right mind believes we beat Bama whether he makes that TD or not. We are not that team yet. We are a good year away from one play determining the difference between a Bama/UT game. He was trying too hard which is very unlike him because the pressure was on. Its been spoken on many times by teammates and coaches he puts too much on his shoulders sometimes and takes things to heart to much. The kids a ride or die VFL and people are not appreciating the effort the guy puts forth. He is trying his best every second he's on that field. Not even the biggest JG hater will argue that.
So here is my question why do we hate on players like this? I could see if he was a Diva, a troublemaker, slacking off. But its not true. Dude is out there putting it all on the line and has proven he is the best QB at this moment on the roster. I think until someone proves they are better we should be behind him 100%. Maurer or Shrout or Bailey can and might beat him out this spring and if they do thats good But if they don't it means they are not yet ready.
I'm just saying guys lets support our players who are doing things right? The guys that maybe they aren't playing as well as you'd like but they show up and work hard and stay out of trouble. All I can ask is these kids do their best and it sickens me when someone is knocking a kid doing the right things.
