Maurer’s Instagram Post

His “flaw” is lack of experience to make better decisions. That fixes itself over time but you need the coaches that understand that and are willing to make the sacrifice NOW for the greater good of the future. *ie Bo Nix/ Gus. As a coach I’m sure you know this. We KNOW what JG is at this point. Do we KNOW what Maurer could be given the same opportunity? No. So as a coach myself, right now, I agree he scares the hell out of you. But as a coach you gotta see the potential of how hard he would be to defend once he played enough for the game to slow down. That third down conversion was all him and natural talent. He improvised off schedule. That 8 yard run was pocket awareness and mobility. Those near ints were bad decisions but right on target. That’s a deadly combination of skills once he gets it and the last kind of qb you wish to see playing against you. If he leaves I’m telling you, in the future we’ll be looking back on Pruitt and right now kicking ourselves and blaming Pruitt for how he handled it.
Agreed he has potential but what BM needs most is a lot of time in the film room. Each of his passing attempts, including the completion was a misread and should have been a pick. He should have pulled it down and run on all three.

Go throw interceptions somewhere else if that's what you wanna do. Fine.

He literally threw into double/triple coverage three times.

JG's pick 6 was a pass into quad coverage where two receivers routes were intersecting, and he didn't see 4 white jersey defenders surrounding his two orange jerseys ???? He didn't even know which one of the two receivers he was trying to force that throw to amongst the 4 DB's. JG made errant throws to covered receivers with wide open receivers across the way. He has no concept of anything other than the primary route.

Agreed.

Before he was bold and confident. He's looked really tentative to me afterwards. I hope he can get past it. He's playing like he hears footsteps.... which isn't abnormal or irrational.

I agree and most forget after the hit he took at the end of the Georgia game he passed out on the sideline. That hit coupled with the others has to have him gun shy.

To me it just doesn‘t make sense for him to transfer now. I think he goes through spring practice to see where he stands with Bailey and then makes his decision.

It could be possible that Tennessee loses both BM and JT Shrout to transfer

I'm not defending how Guarantano has played, but this is just wrong. Maurer was given several chances to play during the course of the season. Look at both the Mississippi State and Kentucky games. He was inconsistent at best, erratic at worst. He was given a fair chance to win the job in those games. He simply didn't play very well.

And JG was consistent ?? Why, then, did Maurer and Shrout ever get chances to begin with. Number 1, Maurer sparked and moved the O when he got in. Number 2, he got clocked both games. If Shrout or Maurer, either one, was given equal time and opportunity on the field, JG would have never returned from the bench. JP was quick to leave JG on the field, and quick to pull the others.

The pick on the throw to Jennings was not because of the coverage. It was the right read and throw, just late, which is bad. Maurer forces throws on almost every throw, which is very bad. Ergo we have to go with bad.

Pruitt has shown no inclination for playing any other QB than Guarantano. If he stays for 2020, battling Bailey for the backup spot isn't in Maurer's best interest if he can go to a team with a competent QB coach and have a legit chance at starting in 2021.

Pruitt has given each QB the opportunity to take the job all year. JG gives the best shot at winning. Maurer may be a good QB in the future, but he isn’t right now and neither is JG. Harrison Bailey.....come on down.

If you want to know why JG is better than Mauer RIGHT NOW...you just need to look at the stat line.

JG - 257 ATT 152 CMP 16 TD 8 INT
BM 75 ATT 35 CMP 2 TD 5 INT

SO
JG throws a TD every 16 passes....BM throws one every 35.7
JG Throws a PICK every 32 attempts, BM throws one every 15
JG Is completing 59.14% and BM is 46.67%

If you can't understand that then you really need to take some time to learn the game of football before you continue to talk about football in public.

JG plays because he doesn't turn the football over as often. This time RARELY can win when they lose the turnover margin...

BM Statistically throws more than twice as many picks as JG and half the TDs while completing 12% fewer of his passes.

BM very well might be more talented than JG but HE ISNT doing a good job of preparing himself or of taking advantage of the opportunities he is given..

Don't get me wrong. I want him to stay...but if he couldn't beat out JG....he's not going to stand a chance VS HB.

That's BS twist on incomparable stats. You cannot compare the stats of 75 attempts verses 257 attempts, and look intelligent. For instance, a true freshman with limited playing time only has 10% less completion than a RS Junior has after 4 years. JG should be embarrassed completing less than 60% after all this time.

JG very rarely get the ball out on time. His best throws are the 50/50 balls down the sideline and I was perplexed as to why we didn’t throw more of them last night.

BM has the talent, we have seen flashes of it this season. I hope he works his tail off this off season and makes it a very tight race. I believe BM's issues were due to lack of game experience. Put your head down and work your tail off young man. If the breaks don't go your way in 2020, your efforts will payoff at another school.

JG simply has zero excuse. More than half of his throws were severely high. BM should be very confident that he can take the starting job next year. HB is very talented also. If BM looses out to HB, and decides to transfer, I understand completely. All these kids have dreams of playing at the next level. They have to game tape to make happen. GBO!

Seriously ?? You may want to watch that again. Yes, he was late, throwing INTO double coverage on two crossing receivers each, making it into 4 defenders, with IU being the only hands that touched that ball.

IMO BM only competition in the spring is Bailey.

Stupid is as stupid does. You have true freshman bad, RS freshman bad, and 4 year player bad. I'll take one of the first two everyday.

Mauer is not going anywhere, after that exhibition the QB spot is wide open next season. He has the tools and gained invaluable playing experience this season. Most freshmen QB's don't get this type of experience early. Now he knows where he stands and what he needs to improve to be an SEC QB.

UI was playing deep cover 2 all night. I mean even on 3 and 4. They were very worried about us taking them deep. We spent most of the game trying to throw into the teeth of cover 2. Need the qb to hit the short throw over the middle or take off and run with it.
Maurer could have run on every play, JG the last 5 min started hitting the under stuff and really hurt them.

JG threw the ball after JJ made his cut and allowed defenders to recover. Straight up timing route.
