Maurer’s Instagram Post

His “flaw” is lack of experience to make better decisions. That fixes itself over time but you need the coaches that understand that and are willing to make the sacrifice NOW for the greater good of the future. *ie Bo Nix/ Gus. As a coach I’m sure you know this. We KNOW what JG is at this point. Do we KNOW what Maurer could be given the same opportunity? No. So as a coach myself, right now, I agree he scares the hell out of you. But as a coach you gotta see the potential of how hard he would be to defend once he played enough for the game to slow down. That third down conversion was all him and natural talent. He improvised off schedule. That 8 yard run was pocket awareness and mobility. Those near ints were bad decisions but right on target. That’s a deadly combination of skills once he gets it and the last kind of qb you wish to see playing against you. If he leaves I’m telling you, in the future we’ll be looking back on Pruitt and right now kicking ourselves and blaming Pruitt for how he handled it.
We won't even know he's gone if he leaves. Him leaving will not hurt Tn one bit.

Baker Mayfield was a walk on. You do realize the only reason he’s a walk on is due to his injury concerns, correct? He will get a chance to compete with other guys that haven’t exactly set the world on fire and a true freshman who may be better than all of them. Proclaiming a disaster before he takes a snap or makes a throw is ridiculous.
Baker Mayfield was awarded a scholarship the 1st chance they were allowed to give him one and always knew he was going to be given a scholarship. Hill will not be playing QB for Tn, no chance no way.

Have you ever seen him play? Just curious as to what skill sets you feel that he lacks. Please share with us in detail, why have a 4 star dual threat transfer starting for us would cause us to be in trouble.
Horrendous passer. Accuracy on his best day is still worse than JGs worst days.

Also he didnt get awarded a RS tells you what the staff thinks of him.

You can't coach up a QB who is too slow to analyze plays. The correct plays were called, but JG failed to execute. Stop with the coach blaming.
How many times did he execute properly vs times he didn't execute. I guess his 18 competitions for 220 yards were all just luck or maybe it was just our other guys bailing him out on those 18 plays? He looked like he executed pretty well going 6-9 for 91 yards down the stretch when we had to have good QB play and execution.

I will admit I do not like JG as our QB but when we needed him most he played his best and for that I respect him. My biggest issue with JG is his inconsistencies, he has spurts where he looks all SEC and then spurts where he looks like a MAC player.

Oh boy here comes the stat brigade. Over look his 6 completions for 5 yards or less...oh and 3 of those in 3rd down when we need 5 or more yards....over look Calloway extending and high throws....forget that IU went full prevent defense...or the fact that the staff trusted him so much that the final drive we went all wildcat!!!!

I can certainly agree with that.

I don't overlook any of that but every single thing you mentioned had zero effect on the overall outcome of the football game.

Okay, this is wrong. Never one time the entire game did IU go prevent. People keep saying this and it’s totally wrong. I’m really getting a good grasp on just how many fans don’t have a clue what they’re watching.

Neither dId the two near INT’s Maurer almost threw but some keep pointing them out. I would argue without the drive by BM and the points it produced we would not have been in position to win the game. Who knows what happens if JG is put back in the game after the pick 6.

Anyone else see his post on Instagram? He posted a picture with a trophy that said God Bless but in small writing it said, “new journey ahead.” Interesting. What are your thoughts?

Transfer? or has he been told he would start over jg next year?

He's a true Fr who challenged an established RS Jr for the starting job on moxie and raw talent. If he chooses to transfer then I wish him well.... but why would he? Anyone who believes JG is invincible at this point needs their head checked.

It appears jg will start as long as he is here, or if he doesn't start he knows he will play at least half a game. Regardless of how well any of the other qb do. Just my opinion based on how it was handled this year. If you notice when Maurer went in, afterward we scored 2 td which we had not done in 3 qtrs of play; and Maurer did get a fg, in maybe 3 minutes of play. Anyone other than jg at the first sign of a mistake comes out of the game.

It's a fair argument and the points were huge at the time. Sometimes coaches have a play that gets you put squarely on the bench, BMs last pass broke the cardinal rule of QBs in that you don't throw across your body off your back leg back over the middle, something he's done before and I'm guessing it's why Pruitt went back to JG. Pruitt also said last night that JG was who he wanted in there with the game on the line. He was trying to get a spark with BM an luckily it lit a spark in JG.

Unless Maurer is blind, he’s got to think he can put in the work and take the job next year. That’s how true competitors think.

As long as jg is here, won't happen, first int. he will be pulled, and all great qb throw int. Jg is only qb allowed to make mistake after mistake and still play.

I honestly didn't see a whole lot from him this year that makes me think he will be a long term solution here. In one drive last night he almost had 2 INT's and not because it was great plays by the DB's. He can scramble fairly well though.

He's a true freshman with a buttload of raw talent. A good QB coach could do a lot for him.

He made 2 mistakes vs MSU but otherwise played great. The KY game he only had the ball for 8.5 minutes and almost none in the first quarter due to a 10+ min drive to open the game by KY. He may not have been himself but throwing for 100 yards in less than a quarter says he wasn’t bad either. Truth is he hasn’t been BAD in any game he was prepared for. He just made mistakes as any freshman would.

All Maurer needs is game preparation and game expierence. But I don't think he will ever get it at ut. If given the chance he will be great somewhere.

In the past month UT coaches I’m sure have prepared for putting BM for a series. You could tell that is what was happening last night by the way was JG was acting, he knew he was going back in. Fact is BM does not know the offense well enough to know where everyone is and can’t anticipate to make changes. He can run and he can throw but he can’t run the offense yet.

Well that is on the coaches, if he doesn't know the offense. I think pruitt prefers a game manager qb rather than one who throws the ball and has some to but will put u in a much better position to win more games. Pruitt is a defensive minded coach, and knows how it effects the defense with an offensive to. Yes Maurer will throw more int. because he throws downfield much more, but given game expierence will be a great qb.
