Any recommendations for visiting Folly Beach, Sc or Charleston? Never been and not sure what’s around. Food, entertainment, boardwalks, kayaking etc?
This is always a tough question for me to answer because it depends on your taste and how much you want to spend. Charleston is full of restaurants with good reputations, but you pay for that reputation. To me they're not worth it. That's just me. I would suggest you check places like Yelp, Tripadvisor, etc, to get the opinion of a bunch of people, not just a couple.
But...
if you like bbq, Swig n Swine is excellent with a good reputation. Located in West Ashley, about 10 mins from downtown Charleston. In fact, if you want to combine it with some entertainment, a local company offers a harbor dinner cruise that includes Jazz/Blues music, and is catered by Swig n Swine.
Tons of good seafood places around. Check the Shem Creek area. Maybe 15 mins from downtown in Mt Pleasant. There are also kayaking outfits here, but I know nothing about them.
Perhaps our favorite restaurant around is Bowens Island restaurant. It's about 5 mins from Folly. Good food and It sits on the water. I guess we like it more than others because of the view and we once saw about 6 dolphins swim by while we were eating. And if you want to add kayaking, there's a kayaking outfit that sits right on the property. For both places check their schedules.
I live on James Island and honestly there are no restaurants here that I would say you've got to eat at unless its breakfast. There are a few popular places for breakfast, probably the most popular is Black Magic. There's one Folly too, but I understand this one is better and cheaper.
You ask about a Boardwalk and there isn't one. However. in downtown Charleston there are excellent places to walk around. That's one of the more popular things to do there. (that or a carriage ride/tour which is very informative) There's a place called the Battery, which has a popular place to walk along the water. And a little further up there's Waterfront Park which is another nice area. But if walking is your thing, then "the Thing" for walkers and runners to do here is walk the Ravenel bridge. Check it out online if interested.
Speaking of downtown, that's mainly where I think the overpriced restaurants are.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.
