Now many times schools wait to apply for the waiver because they aren't sure they want the kid an extra year but it's my belief they can apply before year 5 is over
I think that they might wait, as I posted way back, in order to take advantage of a more favorable climate with more pressure being applied to the NCAA to make rulings beneficial to the student athletes. Actually the conference office makes the ruling and the school can appeal to the NCAA if the waiver is denied by the SEC.
I would think that the school would continue to assist getting a 6th year for the SA even if the plan was for them to transfer before using up their eligibility. It would be pretty sleazy of a school to not assist. Scholarships are year-to-year anyway, so the SA can be cut from the program while still helping them get a 6th year.
