Zach Kent has been...

Why would they do a press release for that?

The thing that I'd like some clarification on is why did Kent not play a single minute in 2018-19. Somebody on the board was pretty guaranteeing that he's never play another minute for UT. Now others are saying that reason that Walker in on the portal is because Kent is balling out.

Why would they? As a service to those that closely follow UTBB? Why would they even employ an SID staff?

The answer he didn't play a minute was one of these things and likely a little bit of all three

1) they want a 6th year

2) he wasn't healthy enough to play

3) he wasn't good enough to play

Never saw an official press release FROM SID. Reads it on VN and calls SID out. 🤨

I never said that they had to. But it would shut down all of this speculation if that's a problem for any of you people.

Also, to be clear, I've not seen any press release or announcement on the status of an official application for a medical hardship waiver. I am fully aware that utsports.com is the "official" website of UT athletics. It's just a roster put out by their PR hacks.

When have you ever seen a press release that a redshirt sophomore, redshirt junior or redshirt SENIOR for that matter has been granted a sixth year of eligibility? There’s a reason they wait. NCAA does a good enough job wasting time on unclear matters. Why grant a player an extra season of eligibility before they NEED it? Kent might play well and healthy for the remainder of his 5 to play 4. He may never log another minute. Reviewing individual cases just in case doesn’t sound like a prioritized use of time. You seem really hung up on UTsports website and their info. 247 on your hit list too? They even have WHEN he was granted his redshirt.

I guess I was a bit ambiguous, as that was exactly what I was trying to say.
You were talking about the possibility of using a regular redshirt for this past season...that was burned his first year. If he ever applies for a sixth season of eligibility, it’ll be on the basis of his second season being lost to medical as well as his first.

I'd go with a combination, but primarily to keep potential options available. #3 alone doesn't register with me if Walker is leaving because Kent is now balling out (as somebody has said he is in post season workouts).

Yea I guess I don’t know these rules that well. I thought he could not red shirt year one because he played. However he could apply for a medical later (for 5 or 6). And could simply use a redshirt for this past season as he didn’t play. That would give him 3 more years and possibly 4. Seemed like a no brainer for the ncaa as everyone has the opportunity for a redshirt and he was certainly injured for most of year 1. I just found it difficult to see they would grant 2 medicals.

But like I said I don’t know these rules that well and thought he burned his red by playing ( or rather could not be applied by playing).

His post are only making it more confusing to those that don't fully understand it. He really needs to stop posting incorrect info about it

Can you read?

I started the post saying I didn’t know the rules. And no where in the entire post did I offer ANY information. I replied to someone and in no way did I provide anything.

Maybe you should read a post before thinking or saying anything about a post............I was uninformed and let the reader know right off the bat. You were uninformed on my post and past your view off as a fact.

Lol. You need to read better.
I was talking about the poster you quoted who was wrong

Not you

I did read it and thought that could be the case however to me it didn’t make sense so I went with my impulse.

Sorry about that. I am often wrong and have no prob admitting it. However I tend to get very defensive when people call into question my intelligence........or lack there of.

I know I am not real smart but I refuse to be played as dumb. I also know I should not feel slighted by someone when they may call into question. Even as a Christian i struggle there.

Again sorry about getting “tiffed” with you.

No worries.

I just don't understand why posters like @butcha clearly post wrong info to confuse folks

There are several NCAA eligibility rules that are to be considered. One is the 5-year clock. Once enrolled an athlete has 5 years to get in their 4 years of play. So if a "medical redshirt" is taken in year #1, then a regular redshirt is no longer available.

In rare situations a 6th year is applied for and granted. Those are usually only going to be available if a single injury or medical condition causes a player to miss consecutive years. This is a possibility for Kent since he did not play a single minute in 2018-19. A player can not take both a regular RS AND a medical RS. It needs to be a 2-year medical redshirt in order to be granted a 6th year.

A couple of other rules to consider are that IN BASKETBALL a regular redshirt can not be used in a year when the student athlete plays a single minute (exhibition games are excluded... see the DJ Burns situation). In 2018 this rule was changed in football only. Football players can participate in 4 games now and still take a redshirt for that season.

Another important rule under "medical redshirts" are the limits in how many games the player participated in. They can not play in more than 30% of the games and the medical condition must occur in the first 50% of the season. If Fulkerson had played in just one more game in his first year he would not be eligible to have a medical redshirt that year.

A lot of this is terminology and the whole concept of redshirt can be confusing. I don’t know your age range, but in Peyton Manning’s freshman season the no-doubt starter was Jerry Colquitt, a talented, good attitude Tennessee native with the timing misfortune of redshirting as a freshman the season before Heath Shuler signed on. Dude didn’t squabble, practiced his butt off and when Shuler declared for the NFL, it was set to finally pay off. Season opener against UCLA...blows his knee first series. University appealed for an additional season and he was turned down cold...because his FIRST redshirt wasn’t medically related they nixed him receiving a medical redshirt...or waiver. Same thing happened with Marcus Jackson a few years ago. He redshirted instead of backing up Alex Bullard his senior season and then blew his biceps the next offseason. Your first one is a redshirt...whether standard or for medical reasons. If it’s for medical reason and Kent’s medical regimen was properly documented, that sixth season’s possibility is greatly enhanced. If he hadn’t had the injury, he wouldn’t have received the redshirt in May 2018. Lot of words and I’m familiar with you and I’ve never questioned your intelligence.

Yes it is.

Some posters like learning rules and such here and you are clearly misleading folks

Laid out right in front of you and you choose to argue with it. There’s no misleading...you’re just a contrarian.

Cool! Kent played in TWO. And he received a redshirt...for medical reasons. The only reason he was alotted one. And you never see a player who has BOTH a medical redshirt AND a standard variety because a redshirt is a redshirt. If you document it as a redshirt for medical reasons the chances for a sixth season are enhanced if another season is lost due to injury.

You said he received a regular redshirt.

That's dead ass wrong dude and you know it

You might as be a troll because you are intentionally misleading posters

No. I said he received a redshirt...and that it was due to medical reasons. It’s not some other thing...it’s a redshirt. Without the medical qualification he likely ends up with Jerry Colquitt’s fate after applying for a sixth season...and doesn’t receive a redshirt in the first place. Look at the self appointed VN truth warrior. I’m the furtherest thing from a troll...I tell the guy that finds conspiracies that will fell the program where they ain’t. 😏 You can look this up yourself but you’re unduly worked up...maybe meditate with a hot wet towel on your head.
